I really love this movie. I've watched it many times. It's not another cheesy Christian film that leaves no impact. It has a way of piercing the judgmental side of me and opening my eyes to the love of Jesus in a way that other cheesy, predictable Christian films have not. It made me take a better look at myself and encouraged me to be a better Jesus (Christian) -- to walk in a way pleasing to Him. I also love the way the movie chronicled one of the revival eras and how the lives of those who came to know Jesus were changed in an intimate and personal way. DEEPLY MOVING!!!

Jesus Revolution is based on a true story that began in SF back in 1970? I was young, having been born in 1959. They preacher, Lonny, traveled to Southern California and started a continuance of the Revolution. It stars Jonathan Roumie (Jesus from the Chosen) Kelsey Grammer as Paster Smith. And a young man portraying Greg Laurie, a real Pastor that you can find of YouTube. I don't want to give away the details, so you'll have to see it. I bought it here on Amazon and I give it 5 stars. Just the nostalgia alone is worth it.

What I liked about this movie was its authenticity. The hairstyles, clothing and attitudes of the late 1960s and early 1970s were captured perfectly in this film. My aunt and I are sticklers for accuracy in period films, especially this time period of the late 60s-70s since we lived and experienced these years. Although this movie takes place in California, it could have been anywhere during the late 60s. My aunt said that watching scenes of disagreements between the Pastor Chuck Smith and his daughter Jeanette were eerily reminiscent of her own arguments with her religious, ultra-conservative father about similar topics. There truly was a "Generation Gap." Although my aunt was not part of the Jesus Revolution, she was a strong Christian who attended church and the church's youth group faithfully through high school. She did go to a Jesus Convention where Greg Laurie did speak and conduct services in Minneapolis; however, she wasn't present for his presentation. Here is what she told me: "My sibling had a friend in high school who was part of the Jesus Revolution and he invited us to this convention. It was 1971. I saw people sitting in circles, rapping about the Bible. I saw others praying together. It was a remarkable scene, filled with activity and a sense of love and belonging. These were kids all in my age group and college kids, there with a sense of purpose. I wish I had heard Greg Laurie speak, but we came after he was done leading the worship service that evening. I understand he is quite charismatic." Drugs were prevalent, which was clearly depicted--these scenes might be difficult for younger viewers to watch. At a party, Cathe's sister regurgitates as the result of ingesting too many drugs; this was a wake-up call for Cathe to get away from the druggie lifestyle of her Hippie friends because her sister nearly dies. Were it not for Greg Laurie turning Cathe's sister on her side, she would have choked on her own vomit. Greg's wake-up call did not occur until he ran into Lonnie Frisbee, a pastor and hippie of the Jesus Revolution, who offered to stay with Greg until he came down from the bad acid trip he was experiencing. Slowly Greg and Cathe are both drawn into the Jesus Movement. What was interesting is how Pastor Chuck Smith evolves from a conservative, Hippie-hating person to a very accepting and loving man who invites the hippies to services in his church, changing services from the old staid ones to contemporary services that spoke to young people. While some oldtimers left, young people flooded his church. There were mass baptisms in the ocean; these scenes were quite beautiful. One scene that stands out is Pastor Chuck washing the feet of each hippie before they entered the sanctuary. He did this because older congregants complained about the hippies' "dirty bare feet." I was reminded of how Mary Magdalene washed Yeshua's feet with her tears at a banquet in the House of Simon, drying them with her hair. This showed her humility; Pastor Chuck washing the feet of the hippies showed his humility as well and his love and acceptance of these young converts. That was a powerful scene for those of us who are Christians or Messianic Jews. Even if you aren't Christian, I highly recommend this movie to learn about a religious Revolution that did happen, and to experience what was late 60s/early 70s were like. You'll be transported back in time like we were.

I had to see this in the theater--and I did--5 times before I bought my copy on dvd. I was a young preteen during the time this movie takes place, watching my older brothers and sisters get involve in the drug and hippy movement and eventually discover Jesus at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, CA. I was later baptized at Corona Del Mar beach as well. This movie rang so true it brought back so many emotions I had forgotten. I cannot highly recommend this movie enough. 5 stars +++++++
