I teach in a huge STEM lab - concrete floor, cinderblock walls, and no ceiling tiles (so students can see the engineering that happens there such as pipes, ductwork, etc). It is a fabulous workspace, but hearing in this environment is so challenging. The acoustics are just terrible. I have a nice quiet classroom space for teaching, but all builds happen in this huge echoing lab. I am 50. In the lab, students do not make the effort to speak up. I say "what" at least 50 times a day. I have been in here for 8 years. That is a lot of "whats". Additionally, there is a lot of background noise that competes with voices - AC/heat, power tools, an aluminum handicap ramp, the bells, the phone, the hip radio I have to wear, 3D printers, student chatter, chairs being scooted around on the concrete floor, etc. This is just a tough place to hold conversations in. I get asked a lot of questions daily - 125 students everyday. Some days I go home mentally exhausted just from trying to hear what the heck these kids are saying. I often have to get up, walk across the room to their table to hear what they are asking me from across the lab. Most days I get 10,000+ steps. However, NOT TODAY!! This baby is perfect for my job. I am only wearing the right one and I am having an absolute fabulous day. I can actually hear them clearly the very first time. I can also overhear them at their workstations from my desk. Eavesdropping is a beast teacher skill that we all use. I never thought I would have that ability in here. I have not had to go to anyone's table. One student actually had to ask me "what" this morning. I am not exhausted. I do not have them turned up a ton because there are some noises that are just loud in here, especially those dang class change bells. I almost jumped out of my chair the first time I heard it using these. Finding a balance between what you want to hear and what you do not need to hear is probably the biggest challenge. They are very comfortable. I hate wearing ear buds because my ears are small and they get sore pretty easy. I think I will be able to use these an entire teaching day with no problem. Plus, I can always switch ears if I need to. My hair is long. No one can see these on me. Trust me, my kids notice everything and no one has brough them up. I even have the case sitting on my desk and they have no clue. It looks like an ear pod charge case. These are supposed to have 4 modes. I think mode 2 or 4 will be best in here but I will have to just keep trying different modes and volumes in order to get the best setup for me. I have tinnitus everyday that never hardly ever goes away. I am sure it is from this job. I probably have mild hearing loss. I sometimes have trouble hearing in restaurants or places with a lot of background noise. I don't think I have enough hearing loss to warrant the very expensive hearing aides. I just have trouble in environments such as this one, which happens to be my 40 hour a week gig. These are perfect for me. Very pleased.

To start, I think it's important to understand that there are several different types of hearing aids on the market. They have their own advantages and disadvantages. Most hearing aids are not available over-the-counter and require a consultation with a medical professional, they include: Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids (all types of loss), In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids (mild to severe hearing loss), In-the-canal (ITC) and completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids (mild to moderate hearing loss), Receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aids (mild to severe hearing loss), and Bone-anchored (BAHA) hearing aids (for people with conductive hearing loss or single-sided deafness.) However, the FDA has authorized the sale of a new category of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids called Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs), for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. This new regulation went into effect in 2021 and authorized the sale of certain OTC hearing aids to consumers without a prescription. Unlike traditional hearing aids, PSAPs are not considered medical devices, and they are not customizable or programmable. There are 3 types of OTC hearing aids available in the US: In-ear PSAPs: These PSAPs are designed to fit entirely in the ear and are similar in appearance to traditional hearing aids. Behind-the-ear PSAPs: These PSAPs are worn behind the ear and have a small speaker that sends sound into the ear canal. Amplified stethoscope-like PSAPs: These PSAPs are designed to be used by people who need to amplify specific sounds, such as doctors or birdwatchers. As to these hearing aids, they are Behind-the-ear PSAPs, which I like better than In-ear that never stay in properly for me and get uncomfortable over longer periods of time. They amplify all sounds around you (so in a busy restaurant they will also amplify ambient noise), not certain frequencies like medical hearing aids. I've tried several OTC hearing aids and these are my favorite more so because of the type (Behind-the-ear) than because they are so much better at amplifying. They do a fine job of amplifying, but the fact that I can wear them for longer periods of time without fussing with them is the differentiator. These are a good first step for someone with mild to moderate hearing loss that wants to go the DIY route. Keep in mind that medical hearing aids cost in the thousands of dollars and are generally not covered by medical insurance. Medicare doesn't cover medical hearing aids either.
