  • Very nice looking range hood, beautiful addition to the kitchen
Size: 36 Color: Stainless Steel
This review is for the Chef model UC-PS18SS-36 range hood with LED lighting. The hood was delivered today which means we haven't installed it yet so will have to update this review later on. Packaging was done carefully and the shipper was careful with it as there was no sign of mishandling or damage at all. I am writing the review a little early because when we removed it from the box and unwrapped it today just to look at it, we were both so impressed at how beautiful it is. The finish is very attractive and should make a very nice upgrade to our kitchen. It will replace a 18 year old cheaper model hood that was painted white. The old hood has a 2-speed blower with settings of 100CFM on low, and 210CFM on high. I have never attempted to measure the actual air flow but I would be surprised if it actually moves as much air as it is rated for. Even this new hood moves less than the rated 860CFM, I have no doubt that the air flow will be several times that of the old one, maybe more, and Ill do some testing on that once we get it installed and running. The construction seems high quality and the corners and edges are smooth and finished. The front panel with a clock is another welcome improvement over the old hood. The hood is heavy, feels like 40 or 50 pounds so it will take two people to install it. My vent is through the wall, not overhead, and it comes setup for overhead venting so I'll have to change that, and this hood comes with all of the parts necessary to install it either way, out the top or out the back. Ill update this review with some recommendations once we have installed it and used it a little bit. For appearance, fit and finish It gets 5 stars. 7/5/2019 UPDATE: We celebrated independence day by removing the old range hood and installing the new one ! Overall the process went smoothly. I removed the old vent hood by myself, no problem. The old vent hood was a 42 inch wide model. We replaced it with a 36 inch wide model. When I ordered this hood, it was available in 42 inch but the 42 wide model did not adapt to a rectangular rear discharge like we needed so we went with the 36, and the 36 fits in the old space nicely. The stove is 30 inches wide so we were still good by 6 inches. The power cord comes with ready made plug on the end for those who have a wall socket to plug it in to. Mine is hard-wired so I cut the last 18 or so inches off the cord along with the plug and wired it into my existing wall wiring that the old hood connected to. The hole in the rear of the vent hood where the cord exited did not line up with the hole in the wall where our house wiring stuck out, so I had to widen the hole in the wall by about 6 inches. This allowed me to use a little longer cord length so the power could be tied in while the hood was resting on the cabinet, and have a little bigger hold to tuck the wiring into the wall through as the vent hood was lifted in place. In my case, the 3" x 10" hole in the wall where the old hood was vented was a perfect match the rear vent on the new hood. Before mounting, I lifted the hood into place and with the rear rectangular vent inserted into the matching hold in the wall, I held it firmly in place while my wife got underneath it and marked 4 spots where the mounting screws needed to go. Then I lowered the hood and rested it across the cabinet tops while I pre-drilled the holes for the mounting screws. We placed washers about as big around as a nickle on the screws to provide a larger area for supporting the weight of the hood instead of just the screw head. I have much more confidence in the supporting ability of the screws with the washers than I would have without them. This hood is heavy, some 40 to 50 pounds and needs very solid mounting. Then I lifted the hood into place again while my wife tucked the cord into the wall, and held it tight in the exact position it needed to be in while my wife used a cordless drill to screw the 4 mounting screws with washers in and we were done. I bought a new vent cap to mount on the outside wall where the vent exhaust exits that I will need to install this weekend. I also need to set the clock to the correct time. I read instructions here that someone else posted saying that with the unit turned off, hold the power button in until the hour and minute flash, then with the hood still off, used the up and down fan speed arrows to set the time. Ill give that a try. So far were are very pleased. The fan is a 6 speed, and when I am standing near the hood and the fan is on any speed above 1, I can feel a draft. The only thing I can say is that you should not attempt to mount this hood by yourself. You need two people to do it safely as it is very heavy. The old hood only came out 18 inches from the wall, this cone comes out 22 inches covering a larger area. It is a very nice range hood, we love it. The fan is not whisper quiet, even on speed 1 you can hear it running, but it is not loud. You can stand next to it and have a conversation. Considering that it has 2 powerful squrrel-cage type blowers on it, I think the sound lever is pretty acceptable. 7/8/2019 UPDATE: I installed the exhaust wall cap this past weekend so we are finally finished. The exhaust cap had a damper built in so I removed the damper from the back of the Chef range hood and will use the one in the cap. If the damper in the cap ever gets stuck or hangs up, it's very easy to get to from outside. If I had left the damper at the rear of the range hood and it ever got stuck it would be much more difficult to get to. Also by removing one of the dampers and only having one damper to push open, the air flow should be better even if just a little. After we were done installing the cap, I stood outside close to the vent cap and had my wife run the exhaust fans. Even on either of the lowest 2 speeds, there is a very good flow of air. On speeds 3 or 4, you can feel a huge air stream coming out. On either 5 or 6 speed setting, there is so much air blowing out, the air flow itself, not the motors, makes a roaring sound that reminds me of a hurricane and blasts you with air if you are anywhere close to it. This is one POWERFUL vent hood. ... show more

  • Has worked fine for 6 months now...
Size: 30 Color: Stainless Steel
Hauslane 30" PS18 Under Cabinet Range Hood As recommended by Hauslane instructions, I tested the unit received prior to installation. (I.e., plug it into a 110v outlet and verify that everything works.) Neither the fan nor lights worked, so I emailed Hauslane technical staff (see their web site) for assistance. To their great credit, after a series of emails back and forth and what they shipped to me at no charge, I now have a working unit. Best possible customer service. Because my old vent hood was extremely difficult to remove (it was tiled into place), I wanted the opposite: as simple to remove / replace as possible. I.e., my just-installed Hauslane could be removed in two minutes. Unplug it, remove two screws and slide it out. It’s rests on three polished aluminum flat bars (1/4" x 1" x 11.5" on the sides & 30" wide in back), which are held onto the side cabinets with 10x24 stainless steel machine screws. I drilled a 1/4" hole into the side frame of each side cabinet – through the stainless steel fan body, removed said fan, and installed #8x24 “rivnuts” in those holes. (I could find NO examples of a floating Hauslane vent hood installation – i.e., with nothing above the hood.) The PS18 is a clever design. (It is precisely 29-13/16" wide, 6-7/8" high, and 22" deep.) One exhaust fan turns clockwise, the other counter-clockwise – and fan blade curvature on one fan is the mirror image of the other fan – to force air out, in my case, towards the rear. Each fan has an assembly on its bottom to catch liquid grease reaching said fan blades and channel it down a tube into the included grease trap tray. Given that our 20 year old Venmar hood lacked such a trap and there was no dripping grease issue, we didn’t install a tray for this hood. Using the trap or not depends on the type of cooking you do – if you make a lot of greasy meals, use the trap. The fan area is covered with a sheet metal double grille, which directs air into the fans only and protects the wiring and internal components from collecting grease. Range hood sellers consistently overstate the cfm’s of their units, and IMO that’s likely the case on this one, since it almost certainly isn’t 875 cfm that’s actually extracted. However, the two fans (on high) draw 260 watts, which is double the draw of our previous expensive hood. We hardly ever use the highest fan speeds; the lowest speeds are quiet and clear the water vapor from boiling spaghetti water (for example) above our stove. Do NOT install the included wind flap if your fan duct has a flap where it exits the house. Fan ducts need to be 6" + (round), 3.25" x 10" – or equivalent. Things that reduce fan CFM: undersized ducting (e.g., 4" diameter), elbows, long runs, and more than one wind flap. Fan reviewers sometimes complain about low air movement and/or fan noise; wanting more of the former and less of the latter. But..., the more air a fan moves, the louder it is. E.g., my garage exhaust fan has a 1/3 hp motor, 4,000 cfm on maximum, and is very loud on high speed. Also a 10" fan moving 100 cfm will be louder than a larger fan moving the same cfm. In any case, we’re satisfied with air volume and the noise level at the lower speeds. Higher speeds are louder are are great for “emergencies”. This is one of the few hood fans with exhaust straight out the rear (3.25" x 10" duct), or out the top (6" round or 3.25" x 10"). The design of the double fan assembly results in the most effective air movement with a rear exhaust. I used Shurtape AF100 aluminum foil duct tape to seal the vent connection and the unit’s top cap prior to installation. See customer Image. Standard “aluminum tape”, Gaffer tape, or regular duct tape are all inferior to Shurtape for this purpose. This hood includes two GU10 3-watt LED 2700k bulbs, which I replaced prior to unit installation. A customer image shows the unit with a stock bulb on the left and a much brighter Amazon Basic 7- watt GU10 5000k bulb on the right. (One Amazon reviewer didn’t realize that the the white film over the hood filters is shipping material!) The only lighting choice is both bulbs on or both bulbs off. The 7-watt bulbs provide ideal illumination for cooking. Install them before installation, with the unit upside down – it’s easier that way. A customer image of my uninstalled PS18 with all panels/filters removed shows the double fan assembly, unit wiring, and interior components such as the transformer and an uncovered circuit board in the upper right. The two rubber tubes at the very bottom are for grease overflow. Our previous hood was “hard-wired”, so I had to add a single 110v receptacle above the hood location, where it plugs in. Gripes: - Rather than only an off/on choice, unit should have had stepped lighting — multiple brightness choices. - A high-pitched electronic bing every time you touch any button is unnecessary and annoying. - The supplied dummy blank cover with its rubber gasket over the top exhaust is nearly 1/4" thick. As the top of our unit acts as a shelf for decorative bowls, I cut a new cover out of 24 gauge galvanized sheet metal and riveted / Shurtaped it to the top. See Customer Image. - As others have noted, the clock loses about a minute per month, which is annoying. (Our LG range clock keeps perfect time for months on end.) Every two months, I set the clock a minute ahead; at least it’s easy to change the time. ... show more

  • Solid Range Hood – Easy Install with a Few Extra Parts
Size: 30 Color: Stainless Steel
I didn’t need the range hood right away, so I ordered it online since the price was the same as my local hardware and appliance stores. Installation was fairly easy—definitely helps to have an extra pair of hands. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I did need to purchase additional vent parts: a 90-degree elbow and vent pipes from my local hardware store to ensure proper airflow. If you're planning to use the vertical rectangular adapter, keep in mind you'll need a Hood Transition Fan Boot, which I also found at my hardware store. However, with the transition boot installed, I noticed the built-in dampers didn’t open fully. Fortunately, I was able to go with the round metal duct pipe all the way to the vent hood, which worked perfectly. Overall, it works much better than my old unit, blends well beneath the cabinet, and is very easy to use and clean the filters. Just be prepared for a few extra parts. ... show more

  • Hauslane Range Hood 30 inch - Stainless steel: Great exhaust hood.
Size: 30 Color: Stainless Steel
Great hood and vents really good due to the fans on this unit. Installation did take some time. Make sure you measure out the installation mounting screws. The unit is heavier the most typical exhaust hoods, so you will need some help installing/mounting the unit. The fan is a little loud but ok. And the light only has one setting, no low or high as some other units. I would still recommend this unit to others. ... show more

  • Awesome performance to cost.
Size: 30 Color: Stainless Steel
This fan works great. Just make sure you have the correctly sized ducting to handle the output. I personally found the installation relatively easy. Someone with less DIY experience may have some difficulties. Can be done by 1 person if you have the appropriate tools, but 2 people make it much easier. ... show more
