I’ve tried many IR cameras and this THOR002 camera from Thermal Master is both well-designed and well-built. I like that it comes with a factory calibration certificate so I know that the temperature values are meaningful. It provides the minimum, maximum, and center temperature values to help you interpret the range of temperatures in the area you are measuring. There’s also a handy onboard library of emissivity values you can scroll through to quickly tune the device for specific materials. That said, I find that the majority of my IR camera applications are associated with finding temperature differences, rather than measuring a specific temperature value, and this camera does a great job of representing even small temperature differences on the screen. In fact, the display is probably the best feature of this camera, with images on the 2MP screen being crisp and easy to interpret. The active viewing area, at 2.5” x 2”, is also larger than many cameras I’ve used. I’ve included several example photos to give you a feel for the image resolution. I’m particularly amused with the “Ghost” footprint image I accidently made when I grabbed a photo of the wood floor about 30 seconds after I moved my feet (the max difference in that image is ~8F, but even the 3-4F differential regions provide a nice contrast. The camera also did a fine job of finding the 2x4 studs in my exterior wall while I was taking a picture of the ceiling fan. As with many higher-end IR cameras, this one includes “fused” image capabilities wherein you can merge a visual-light and an IR image on the screen to help interpret what you are seeing – this one is unique, however, in that it does the traditional “fusion” as well as a “Picture-in-Picture” mode. The camera records both still and moving images, as well as capturing synched audio for narration of the inspection. The camera includes both a flashlight mode and a laser pointer (to help with aiming the camera at specifc areas on distant objects, like a hot furnace for example). The camera comes with a 32GB SD memory card already installed for storing photos and video. Wired image-transfer from the camera to the USB port on my Windows PC was seamless, with the PC immediately seeing the camera as a windows-compliant memory device; all the standard File Manager commands (copy, paste, etc.) worked as expected and the images coming across as JPG files. One of the things I like about their file management is that, for the fused images, they store both the IR image and the associated visual image with the same filename and just add a different suffix (e.g., 6143226-IR and 6143226–DC); that makes it really easy to keep things organized when you’re taking multiple pictures. The included protective case is also solidly built and well-padded to keep the camera in good condition. I’m really impressed with the quality and features of this camera. Note: there’s a quick start guide in the case, but you really need to go to the manufacturer’s website and download the full 27-page manual so you can utilize all the features of this camera.

This thermal camera is excellent....when I ordered it I felt like the screen was going to be too small but it's just right. I used to have one from amajor brand that attached to a phone or tablet but it stopped working, and honestly this is much easier to just pick up and turn on. The case makes it easy to carry around without damage, very convenient. So far the temperatures seem to be accurate to me and it's easy to tell what I'm looking on the screen. Overall it's a great tool so far, better than the name brand one I used to have.
