Top Amazon Reviews

Hard on the wallet, but loads of fun!
Size: 54" ZTR Wall Charger
This mower is a lot of fun! I have been eying it for the better part of a year and on the whole, I am not disappointed, with one caveat. 4-5 acres on one charge may be an absolute maximum in ideal conditions, if not, it's a flat out exaggeration. However, I was not expecting to get that much on my property which is 5 acres of grass/field, most of which has a significant grade. So, why the low rating? Mostly it's how this was handled by Amazon, with a secondary concern about longevity of the systems. This is going to be a long review... ***Let's start with the ugly. I love Amazon. I buy a lot from them and have for many years, so this experience surprised and disappointed me greatly. I know most reviews should not include delivery experience and I usually agree with that, but a ride-on mower sold directly by Amazon, is a bit different. There is no way to leave separate and public feedback for Amazon as a seller and this is a high dollar purchase. The mower was ordered on a Saturday, with Prime delivery for Thursday the next week (5 total days). On Monday, FedEx listed the shipment as late, and stated that it would arrive on Tuesday of the following week. I immediately contacted Amazon, and was assured it would arrive on time. I repeated this dance with customer service until Friday of that week and wouldn't you guess, it did not arrive on time. Instead, it arrive when FedEx said it would 10 days after the order was placed. It was listed as LTL Economy, so, FedEx had no incentive to rush it, and Amazon customer service lied to me, not just once, but repeatedly. Some might say it is a wonder that a person can buy a ride on zero turn mower online and have it delivered to the garage door, those people are correct, but a promise is a promise... ***As is tradition, the bad is in the middle. I have three issues here. At the time of writing I have about 30 hrs of run time on the machine, judge appropriately. -This mower is significantly more sophisticated than your average gas/belt drive system. As such, it has systems to protect its systems. That means it will throw a code if something looks vaguely problematic. Knowing what is wrong is usually as simple as navigating to and reading the error message on the control panel. So far, fixing the codes has been as easy as turning things off and turning them back on again, clearing clogged blades, and once, clearing the top of the deck and allowing the blade motors to cool off. Systems must also be engaged in their proper order. The parking break must be engaged during startup, or the mower will not engage the drive wheels. There was one instance where one of the drive wheel encoders was not happy, but I left it in the garage, and 5 hrs later it was fine. So, these things represent a huge unknown. Will this get worse with wear or will things just stop working altogether? -I already mentioned the overstated range in the intro. Due to the lateness of the shipment, and the rain we got in the mean time, my entire property was looking a bit more like a field of wheat (no joke I still have 3-4 foot tall stalks of grass in some parts), so it has been tough to gauge what normal cutting would look like. I HAVE managed to get about 2 acres of cutting in one charge where the ground is relatively flat and I'm not lowering the height of the grass by more than 1". The blade speed does make a big difference in battery life, but I'm still figuring out how to use it most effectively. The slowest speed seems to be best for knocking down the really tall stuff without clogging the chute and getting the most range out of the battery. However, it does do it. Two passes at 4.5" gets all the tall stuff, and then a third pass at 2.5" gets it looking like a lawn again. -The last big negative here is of course, price. This machine is one of the most expensive options out there. This model is just about twice the price of a gas powered zero-turn of more traditional design here on Amazon, as well as smaller battery powered models. There are absolutely features and aspects of this model that don't come with those, but it is a big ask and only time will tell if it's worth the investment. If I can get 10 years out of this machine, I will be happy, until then, I will be cautiously optimistic... ***You've come this far, now it's time for the good, and there's a lot of it. -No gas. No Fumes. No heat. No oil. No air filters. No belts. No exhaust. Did I say no gas? Just not needing to go to the gas station with two 5G jugs, rig them in the back of the SUV, pray they don't tip over or leak on the way home, hear the wife complain that the car smells like gas anyway... getting away from all of that, it's actually priceless. The trade off is limited run time. I can't just refuel and go, but I can go do something else for three hours and then get started again. I can work around that. In the hot summer sun, there's also no where near the amount of waste heat generated as gas. I have mowed on some very hot days and I certainly notice the difference. I also don't come away from a mowing session smelling of burned oil or gas fumes. -Power and speed, this machine has those for sure. I can believe the 41 hp equivalent statement. Of course, using them together will cost run time, but the adjustable blade and drive speed means there are options for balancing to the job at hand. I can/have mowed a roughly acre size field in about half an hour with the right conditions and settings and that used about 50% of the battery. -The built in dump bed is great. That space is usually where the engine goes on a gas model, but I've used it to pick up sticks while mowing, transport soil, carry my GW chainsaw, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, tiller, etc. -It tows very well. The low end torque of electric motors is great and that power is evident when hauling a trailer. Additionally, zero turns make maneuvering a trailer much easier. -It's just fun. The more I use this mower, the more I realize how being fuel conscious really hampered my utilization of previous models. As long as electricity costs don't skyrocket, charging this beast doesn't cost nearly the same for me as gas would, so I use it for more tasks and do a lot more clean up (think wood piles) that I otherwise might not. -The seat is comfy and being able to adjust the suspension of it is a nice touch. -The lighting kit is very nice, it really lights up a large area around the machine. I won't be using it too much, but it's certainly nice to have. ... show more
