  • Best Purchase This Year (and maybe last year, too)
Size: 20" Mower (5.0Ah)
I have a corner lot. I am 67 years old. I've been mowing my big, corner lot with a people-powered lawnmower. You know--the kind your grandfather used? No motor? Right. You can see why I've grown to dread mowing the lawn. The thing is, I hate gasoline mowers--hate the smell, the noise, the maintenance, the pollution, and I hate trying to start the blamed things--hence the push mower. I could have eliminated one of those problems by purchasing a gas mower with an electronic starter, but why eliminate only one vexation? I decided to buy an electric mower. The new, battery-powered ones seemed promising. After a couple weeks of pouring over reviews and reading blog posts, I settled on this one by Greenworks. I had reservations. Would I regret not paying our the extra couple hundred to get a self-propelled mower? Nope. I am thrilled. Assembly: Getting it out of the box and subsequently dismantling the box was harder than putting the mower together. Ease of Operation: Easy-peasy, which is good because the manual was not written by someone with an innate grasp of English or much sense of what the user might want to know. There's always the Internet, though--which is how I learned what the mulch plug was. Good to know. Thanks, Internet. Weight: Pushing this thing around is almost not work at all. It glides. It turns--well, not on a dime. But easily. Noise: I'd call it a loud hum. Bear in mind that I came to this mower after using one with no motor at all. If you come to it after using a gas-powered mower you'll think it's wonderfully quiet. Cutting ability: Amazing. Did a great job with the way-too-tall fescue, but fescue's easy, right? It also did great with the weed-field on the side of the house that I'd thought I'd have to take the string trimmer to. Love the job it does. Bonus: adjusting the blade height is a breeze. Battery Life: I bought the version with a single battery. This was a mistake. Unless you have a small yard, get the one with two batteries. So there you have it. I can't tell you how well it will hold up because I just started using it, but right now I consider it a great purchase. ... show more

  • Great Mower
Size: 20" Mower (5.0Ah)
This thing is so light it feels more like pushing a vacuum cleaner than a traditional mower. We have a big yard with Bermuda grass and cut to 1". We avoid cutting when it's really wet (not that it ever rains in TX) but never had any issues with lack of power or stalling. As for batteries, they last an impressively long time but if you have a really big yard or really thick grass, I suggest picking up a spare. ... show more

  • Decent performance for medium size lawn.
Size: 20" Mower (5.0Ah)
Battery will complete a mid sized lawn (5000sq feet). Quiet and light. Better choice than gas or 115V for mid sized lawn. I do find that the mower does not allow you to set the blades low enough to get a close shave.

  • Great Purchase!
Size: 20" Mower (5.0Ah)
This was a great purchase for our first lawnmower! My husband and I wanted to save money so we decided to bite the bullet and try it out. We have a decently large yard so we were worried about using an electric mower. We ended up buying a second battery just in case. But the battery was only half depleated by the time we finished. It started up so smoothly. The assembly was a little difficult to figure out as the directions aren’t very clear but we just messed around with it until we got it. After we were done we just used a small brush to clean it and i think as long as we keep that up, it’ll last a really long time. ... show more

  • Glad I ordered a second battery.
Size: 20" Mower (5.0Ah)
I got mine on Saturday put it together and decided to mow my back yard this morning. A 13 year old boy had been mowing my lawn with a 16" single blade Greenworks mower. I'm not positive, but I think he was able to mow the front and back yard using a single 4 amp battery. I figured the 5 amp would be plenty for the back yard, but it conked out before I could finish. Apparently the two motors require twice the battery power of the smaller 16" mower. What is disconcerting is that when I put the dead battery on the charger, the charger indicated it was fully charged. I tried unplugging the charger for a couple of minutes but still the green light showed. I called Greenworks and I believe I was told the waiting queue was 203. I opted to have them call me back, but I haven't heard from them yet. There was a message on the support line to have all your serial numbers and receipts ready. So I spent a lot of time photographing the mower and all the labels on the box it came in. My mower was actually manufactured on 05/15/19 and it is now 07/20/20. That means the mower has been in the box for over a year before it made it to my house. Anyway I haven't seen a charger before that indicates a battery is fully charged when it is completely dead. As for the cut of the mower, my back yard is flat. The cut of the mower was nice and smooth with no visable grass clippings. I did not use the clippings bag. I found the mower easier to handle and push. I was able to trim closely around trees and such. It is true that the blades are set back from the front, so you can only trim close on the sides of the mower. I think what might be happening to people that are having their mower quit working is that the motors are getting clogged up with dry grass and they are over heating and cutting out on a thermal protector. Or maybe the brushes are worn out. I don't know hard it is to access the motors' brushes as the motors are under a green plastic body cover that has several screws that need to be removed. I did sharpen the blades with a file before I started mowing. The small twin blades are more difficult to remove than on a standard single blade mower. Also people should know that the threads on Motor II are left hand threads. Motor I has right hand threads. The two motors rotate in opposite directions so the blades and motors are not interchangeable. One is a mirror image of the other. Given all the negative reviews, I may have ordered the wrong mower. I thought it would be great because of the two batteries, and twin blade electric mowers have been around since the 50's. Time will tell, but this will probably be the most expensive mower I have ever purchased. I guess in many ways gas is still the way to go. You can purchase a gas mower for the cost of a single battery, particularly at the end of the season. My suggestion to the engineers who designed this machine is to indicate the thread rotation on the the top of the motors by molding it into the case. Also they should should come up with a blade lock system that makes it easier to remove the blades. Also a way to keep the motors free of dust and debris, and finally a way to easily access and replace the brushes without having to completely disassemble the entire mower. A threaded cap over each motor might the the way to go. The cap could be removed to inspect the motors for dust and debris. and perhaps the cap cpuld be designed in such a way as to provide easy access to the bush sockets. ... show more

  • Lasted less than 3 years
Size: 20" Mower (5.0Ah)
Loved the mower right up until it started to make a strange noise before what appears to be the shaft on one of the dual blades breaking. It has about 2” of play now so it rather broke or came loose up in the housing. Bottom line, won’t run anymore and now I have to buy a new one. Hard sell to friends still using gas mowers they’ve had for 20 years. ... show more
