Cutting wood is one of those romantic notions in movies that looks like something heroes do when they have nothing else to do or are brooding. In the real world, chopping wood with an axe is hard work. Sure, it can be done, but it's the little things that make you work more than you need to. Rarely do you get to work with wood that is cut perfectly perpendicular to the axis and balances perfectly on our chopping stump. Usually, for me at least, what happens is the log I placed on the chopping stump won't stand up because it's cut on an angle - on both ends. The log usually falls over before I can swing and make the cut. While it won't do large logs, this log splitter is much nicer to use than the 'splitting dance' you need to do when cutting wood. Place your log into the top and lean it up against the side so it's mostly upright, then whack it with a sledgehammer. Works great. I was able to split about a dozen logs in less than half the time doing it the traditional way. When assembling this, I had a little issue getting all the bolts to line up into the threaded holes. Once they were all in, they tightened with no issues, but keep them loose until all of the bolts are started. The carrying case is a nice touch. It came with an extra bolt and four screws if you wanted to mount this on a stump. Keeping this hardware and the hex wrench for the bolts with the splitter is much easier when it's all in the carry case. Would I buy it again or recommend this to friend: Yes. ... show more

I took this on a camping trip last weekend and it did its job, but with a bit of work. The splitter itself is very high quality, it’s hefty and heavy duty. It does exactly what it’s supposed to, I was able to split much bigger logs into smaller kindling for starting a camp fire. The only issue is that it needs to be screwed down to something for fast and efficient splitting. If you use it without support you’ll have to constantly pick it up as it will fall over with each strike. I got around this by screwing it to a large 2x4 and using my feet to hold it down. The media could not be loaded. This splitter can accommodate a pretty large diameter log, much larger than the typical logs that come in pre-cut firewood near me. I got this size in order to have the option of using it on a wider range of wood. I got some really straight-grained red oak to try it out on and was very impressed with how easily I was able to make kindling for the firepit and chips for the smoker. I was able to make sticks as small as 1/4" in some of the wood using only a log from the pile as a striking tool. With the same "hammer" it took only a tap to set the log in place, then 1-2 taps to split cleanly through. The design is good-looking, the manufacture well done, and the materials apparently sufficient to the task having not deformed or lost any paint with my trials. It came with a bag that can cover the unit or some wood, whatever you choose. I have it out back for now, but definitely this would be a great camping or vacation item. Fires at the beach, cookouts at the national park, at the campground. This is a very efficient, safe way to split small logs. The logs will fly apart somewhat, so be aware of your feet and body in relation to the wedge surfaces. In my use, it didn't take much force to split the logs. First surprise was the box, it was MUCH smaller than I expected. Opening it up I realized it's disassembled for transport. The second surprise was the blade, it's relatively shallow, and completely blunt. You can run your hand right across the blade with no risk except from the knicks in the blade (see photos). I'm pretty disappointed because I chose this as a larger alternative to the Highpro Wood Splitter we already have. The Highpro has a very sharp blade that quickly digs into wood. This Greener XL is so blunt and shallow, that it takes more force to split logs. I'll definitely be using the Highpro for smaller logs. The entire thing is painted metal, which immediately starts to chip off the blade. I strongly recommend storing this indoors and keeping it dry with a thin coat of oil like you would an axe or splitting maul. The package included a nice outdoor cover, but based on my prior experience I would treat it only a dust cover! ... show more
