Once you sharpen the edge it does a great job. Very sturdy and was mounted to a large stump, with the screws provided. I took a piece of 1/2 inch pvc pipe and cut a slot in it, length wise, to protect humans and pets, while not in use.

Super simple tool..really sturdy. with a good hammer does a great job breaking down firewood sized wood for use in my smokers. I buy oak firewood and split the logs as I go to get splits the size I need. In 10 minutes I get break down 3 or 4 logs without a saw or axe. Item arrived in good condition . I see no reason this wont last for many years..its sturdy and easy to sharpen when needed. Im super happy with this item..makes my smoker wood easier and safer to manage at half the cost of the bigger more heavy duty items. I am sure for someone that splits a lot of wood the bigger more expensive units are great but for my purposes this is perfect and much easier than using an axe and or saw.

"This has been great for us this winter. Good design, splits mid size logs into manageable pieces. Works best if you cut your logs into flat ended 12 to 18 pieces then tap them onto the top of the splitter with the top of a sledge hammer then strike the flat top of the log with the sledge. Takes a few good hits for hard wood such as the mesquite that I have. I mounted mine to a large flat stump with 4 lag bolts."

"Mount this to something solid (heavy round on concrete, for example), and you will be very pleased with its performance. Works better than I expected. Virtually indestructible construction unlike cast iron options which will likely crack at some point. I'm driving it a 4 lb hammer and find it just fine. I think those people that struggle to split dry wood with it probably don't have it mounted firmly to a solid base. If the ground is soft under your base then your impact energy will be lost from each strike. Really an exceptional value. I don't think I could have done any better for double the cost. I cut a deep slot in a split log to use as a safety cover on top of this when not in use. Takes about one minute to do plunging your saw and prevents a serious accident (think about kids playing near this...). Steel seems hard enough to last and comes very sharp."
