    • A great sized grinder for a crowded countertop but there are other considerations
I requested this grinder because our old one is on its way out. It has the habit of running half of its cycle whirring. Because of this, I don't know if I have the amount of coffee I need. I don't drink coffee. Whenever I make it for my husband, I have to ask how many cups he wants. The grinder is set for how much to grind for "X" amount of cups brewed. If something is off, the coffee is awful—I would assume. The Geek Chef Coffee Grinder isn't set up that way. At all! For the Geek Chef, you just grind your beans, measure what you need and brew, storing the leftovers. It is very good for a single coffee-drinker household. It probably would be even better for a French press set-up, which probably would make much more sense for us. I like the little window into the grinding bin but I'm not crazy about the way the top opens. Or maybe I'm opening it wrong. Either way, I fumble and bumble, often spilling a good share of the morning's grind. Arthritic fingers are always stiff in the morning, making morning the worst time to need coffee. Oh, but that's when coffee drinkers are in the market for coffee. That means the clever orange go button might need a design tweak if the shape of the top is reconfigured to allow for a better grip for opening. I also wonder how long the grinder blade will last. I compared it to the blade in the grinder model we have been using for twenty years—the one that is just now starting to slip. The two blades are miles apart in quality and design. The old blade is a cutting tool with curved ends and knife-like cutting edges. The Geek Chef blade is stamped out of a lesser metal and has little in the way of a cutting edge. The few times I have used it, I have struggled to make the texture right. The old one had a setting. For this machine, I assume I keep grinding until I get it right. And I keep having to open it to see if I have it right. And there's my opening problem. I suppose for minimalists this coffee grinder would be a lovely choice. Not for me. I need more control through settings. Especially because I am grinding coffee not for myself, but for someone else. ... show more

We like good coffee, and sometimes we end up getting whole beans as a gift and need to grind our own. This small device doesn't take up a lot of space and certainly gets the job done. Sadly, the bulk of the unit's size is taken up by the motor, which doesn't leave a lot of room for coffee beans, so this only does a small number of beans at a time. Another problem is that, being made of plastic, it does heat up rather quickly, so you can do about 5-7 batches of beans and then need to give it some time to recover. The last issue we had was that if you hold the base, it does vibrate quite a bit, and it can make your fingers go numb. On the plus side, it makes short work of coffee beans -- taking about 10 seconds per load to get a nice, smooth grind. The mouth is round (instead of oval), so you have to practice a bit on pouring the grounds into your container to avoid spilling all over the counter, but I didn't have any issues (after the first one). And, I also found that it you hold ONLY the lid when you grind, the vibration doesn't translate quite so much, and it is much easier on the hands. So, in short, not a stellar product, but certainly serviceable and compact enough to be stored right in the kitchen where you need it. ... show more
