  • GEARWRENCH Ball Joint Separator - 3916D worked very well for us
The GEARWRENCH Ball Joint Separator - 3916D worked very well for us on my kid’s 2003 Honda Accord. The kids needed new front bearings, rotors, and brake pads, so I got parts and tools on order from Amazon, including this ball joint separator. The kids arrived a day early, so we got started on the car before the parts and tools arrived. Since we did not have the tools yet, I had my kid try to hammer on the ball joint studs to break them loose from the upper and lower arms. The ball joints did not budge; they were stuck. We received the parts and tools later in the day, and my kid used this ball joint separator on all four ball joints, and the ball joint studs popped right out easily just like they are supposed to. He also used it on the tie rod ends. I was very impressed that the tool worked so well, quickly, and easily, and there was no discernible bending or deformation on the tool, other than a very little bit of wear/scoring on the lever from the screw. For me, it was a very worthwhile purchase, and I recommend it. ... show more

  • Works Like a Champ!
I was unable to break loose the ball joints on my 2004 Toyota Camry after extensive effort and associated frustration. This tool along with a 1" box wrench broke the ball joints loose in a matter of minutes. This tooI is well made and should stand up to years of service. I would certainly buy it again. ... show more

  • Built like a tank.
I was apprehensive when purchasing this, but when it came it was burly. Removed my tie rod ends with ease. Can't beat the lifetime guarantee either!

  • Great tool at a great price. Worked well.
Used this to disassemble the steering knuckle of a 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ to repair the mounting holes for the brake caliper (one stripped, one with a broken bolt). It's inexpensive and works well. I haven't yet replaced the ball joints themselves, but I will soon and I have no doubt it will work extremely well. This works on all "Ball Type" joints. I believe some people have problems with breakage because they aren't using it quite right. Pressing ball type joints can require very significant forces that can break any tool if not used the right way. To use this tool properly: 1) Lubricate the handle bolt's threads AND the tip where it meets the other side of the tool. Don't scrimp here, use plenty and especially pack it into the little ball's cavity in the end of the bolt. I used molybdenum bearing & u-joint grease; worked great. 2) BE CAREFUL! Wear safety glasses. Take all reasonable safety precautions. Remove fragile things from the area. 3) Thread castle nut onto the joint stud until the stud is about 99% through the nut. ***This is to protect the threads of the stud from damage. And it gives a flat, broad area to press against instead of the rounded, small stud.*** 4) Mount the tool onto the joint and thumb tighten. Align so that the single finger is on top of the castle nut. Be patient, it can take a few tries to get the tool set right so it doesn't slip or pop off when tightening with wrench. 5) Tighten the tool. How tight is different for each joint; it takes experimentation and experience. ***Do not attempt to tighten the tool until it moves. This is where I think most breakages happen.*** 6) Tap the top of the single finger pressing on the castle nut with a hammer or small sledge. ***If the joint doesn't move repeat steps 5 & 6. It will move eventually.*** Remember: The forces involved can be quite large. Steel can become very springy and energetic. Be careful. Take your time. ... show more

  • Not terrible
Constructed well and works good… for smaller format joints like tie rod ends and sway bar links and such. Large format ball joints like lower control arms and such…. There are better tools than this that will make the job easy.
