  • Super Easy to Assemble, Kind of Expensive for What it Is
This is a review for the Gearit vocal booth. The first thing I would like to say is that assembly is incredibly easy. It took me a half hour to unpack and assemble the booth. There are two suggestions I would make before assembling. First is to read through the directions, which are very clear and second is to use a quality 5mm key. One is included, but it's not the best. Pros: Sets up easily, looks great, and does kill ambient noise. If someone above you is playing bass-heavy television you are going to hear it, but it does what it's supposed to do extremely well. Great for vocals, guitar amps, and the like. Cons: Expensive for what it is. Technically, one could make this out of PVC and some moving blankets. It would be a pain, as most blankets don't have grommets and the top would have to be improvised so it wouldn't look as nice. A little bit small. Good for vocals, but it would be hard to do, for example, an acoustic guitar in the booth. It probably could be done but wouldn't be that comfortable. This isn't a deal killer because it's made to be portable. Some tips: Expect to add a small fan for in-between takes and a light. I'm using a shop light ($10) with an LED (no heat) bulb tilted upward to reduce glare. Included accessories are kind of cheap, but they are included I chose not to use the small screws at the base because it seemed unnecessary. If you're planning to move this around I would suggest doing the same. Run a power strip and your headphone amp cables in before putting up the blanket walls. You're going to want a strip for iPad/Kindle lyrics, a headphone amp, a fan, and light. Just figure it into the cost. Lastly, and I can't stress this enough - you'll need a mic stand with a round base. I'm 5'9 and with a tripod my back is hitting the curtain. I like K&M stands, but I'm using an old Atlas round base (from when they were solid!). It works great with more valuable mics (mostly Neumann U87 or Mojave MA-201 here). ... show more

  • Disappointing, and That’s the Disappointment
I was very excited to pick this up on Amazon, having looked at much pricier solutions like the Snap Studio. The good was the all-metal frame. Very sturdy, and takes up less volume than the large diameter pvc pipe that makes up the Snap Studio. I also really liked the horizontal bars of the frame too, whereas the other guy’s portable studio only has the 4 vertical beams of the frame. Why’s that matter? Well for one you can mount your tablet in the middle and face head on rather then facing the corner because that’s the only place you can mount anything. I also really appreciated the accessories that it came with. The shelf was perfect for my audio interface and the hanger for headphones worked great. The tablet holder? Well I didn’t feel confident putting a several hundred dollar iPad in it and be confident it’s not going to hit the floor at some point. No problem, picked up another much sturdier one right here on Amazon. What I love is the fact the frame is small in diameter so normal accessories that are designed to attach to a mic stand will work with it (tablet holder, headphone holders, etc); that’s not the case for snap studio. As for sound? I get a very good dry sound inside but the caveat is that I can only record when it’s absolutely quiet (like late at night) because this is not designed to soundproof. Now for the bad, and this is the real disappointment because I thought this was the end to my search. The blanket doesn’t seem to be anything more than a thin moving blanket. It has grommets across the top for hanging on the frame with zip ties. The issue I am having 45 days out of buying it is that maybe half of those grommets have ripped out of the blanket, as they are very small themselves. The blanket’s stitching has begun to come apart at the edges to wear you can slide your hand inside the blanket. This is all from it simply hanging on the frame mind you! I have seriously thought that since my return window has passed I would just invest in some acoustic blankets for it but the catch to that is the frame is under 80”, so a standard 80” blanket will technically be too long (if only by a few inches) and bunch on the floor. All in all, it’s a usable studio that was built with some good ideas, but the poor, poor quality of the sound blanket is going to end up costing me $150 to replace with two acoustic blankets to fit around the frame. At that price I could have just bought a snap studio unfortunately. In hindsight returning it probably would have been the wisest thing to do. On the other hand with a good blanket and a better system for hanging it, I would have given it 5 stars. Great idea, some poor materials. ... show more

  • Decent portable recording booth
We have been wanting one a recording booth for a while. My daughter does vocals for a band and we also do videos that require voice over work so having a recording booth is something we have been looking into. It's got some weight to it, comes in a storage bag and needs to be assembled. The directions aren't that clear and it took us a lot longer than anticipated. We were hoping for something much easier to put together and not as time consuming. Once we got it together, the inside does hold sound quite well. It creates a nice sound barrier and comes with accessories to hang headphones and electronics. It is taller than expected so it will fit most heights. Since we won't be using it all the time we will be breaking it down to store since we have limited space which is why we were looking for a portable set up. The function is there. It does create a great sound space for what we need but the set up is a bit time consuming. If you can leave it up in a space without needing to store when not in use, this is a really great value for what you get. ... show more
