You need WAY more space than they list. Listing says it is 15" wide; it is slightly larger than that... I would say that you actually need 17" to be safe. Then, plan 24" in front of the 26" dimension listing to access it for adding salt. The 51" height needs more because the door flips up to add salt. Not listed is that the floor must be flat and level to 5°... That isnt the case in my mechanical room near the floor drain. The result is that it tips just enough that it doesn't fit between my water heater and my furnace. 😩 I measured twice before ordering, but the listed dimensions aren't adequate. ... show more

The GE Smart Water Softener (GXMD30W) is a phenomenal investment for any homeowner. My development is expanding and the water company is constantly flushing the water lines. Brown sediment was the norm until I installed this unit. The high quality of this unit is evident from the moment you unbox it; it feels durable and well-engineered. Unlike many industrial-looking systems, this model boasts pleasing aesthetics with a sleek, modern design that looks great in any utility space. While the unit is notably large, its footprint is well-managed for a 30,000-grain system. I found the installation to be rather straightforward, thanks to the clear instructions and integrated WiFi features that simplify setup. However, a word of caution: this should not be attempted by those without solid DIY skills. Precision is vital, as a major water leak—especially if the unit is installed in a second-floor location—could be absolutely devastating to your home. If you are confident in your plumbing abilities, this system provides incredible soft, filtered water. Keep in mind nd though, this is not an "install it and forget about it", you'll have to monitor and replenish as needed. However, thanks to the smart features, you'll be notified when supply levels;s are low. This is a well-designed, high-capacity water softener with a compact footprint. The 45,000-grain capacity is plenty for a whole house, and the unit holds over 200 pounds of salt, which reduces how often it needs attention. Setup options are straightforward, and the built-in WiFi features are genuinely useful—salt level alerts are convenient, and the optional shutoff valve that can stop house water flow if usage is detected during vacation mode is a great safety feature. It also ships on a pallet, which made delivery and handling much easier. It delivers plenty of soft water with not much salt usage. My only warning is to download the full documentation before installing and don’t rely on the included printed guide. The valve ports are not marked for inlet and outlet despite saying they are. They were reversed from the softener I replaced. The printed instructions are very sparse. Some important installation steps are missing. ... show more

This is an excellent water softener made by a very reputable company, can’t go wrong! Very happy with the water softening so far. I’m glad that we don’t have to fill up the salt too often. Super easy to install, water taste good although we don’t really drink it, but we cook with it.

    • Nice unit but flooring needs to be fully leveled

This is a nice, well‑made softener unit, and overall it works as intended. The built‑in WiFi and water flow alerts are convenient features, and once it’s up and running, it does a good job reducing hard minerals throughout the house. That said, the size was bigger than expected. It technically fits in our basement, but the space is pretty tight. Another thing to note is that the unit has to sit fully flat, and our basement floor has a slight dip. Because of that, we’ll likely need to put boards along the side and underneath to help level it out. It would be great if the design accounted for situations where the flooring isn’t perfectly level, since that’s pretty common in older homes. Aside from those installation challenges, the softener performs well and has been working as expected, it seems sturdy and durable and a decent value. ... show more
