This is the second Opal Nugget machine I have bought. My first one, an Opal 2, worked beautifully for years without a single issue. We used the hell out of it. No filters, tap water, ran 24 hours a day. Cleaned regularly. Never had an issue, until 3 weeks ago. I tell you how we mis-treated this machine because we did the bare minimum and got perfect results every day for YEARS. When we finally had an issue it was an high pitched squeal. I would unplug overnight and plug it back in and no issues for a few days, then it happened again. I repeated what I did the first time and if worked beautifully until it squealed a third time. That time I took a moment to really listen to it before doing anything. I discovered the squeal came from the piece that made the ice. It was getting jammed. I knocked a few pieces loose and the squeal stopped instantly. I dont know how to work on these machines so I decided to give it away and bought myself this current machine. Reviews have been all over the map. I believe some are human error causing the issue and some are actual machine issues. I did not leave it upright for 24 hours. It was delivered, unboxed and cleaned then immediately turned on. I dont baby the machine. If it breaks I will use the warranty or actually hire someone to come fix it. Unlike last time. I chose to get this machine because its newer and bigger than the Opal 2. Anyways, its been on for about a week and is being used 24 hours a day. No issues at all. Worthy of 5 star review, so far. If it breaks I will come back and let you guys know. I expect it will be just fine though because these machines are beast mode and legendary ice. They are amazing. The dupes don't even come close to the quality of what this machine does. Splurge. Its worth it to treat yourself and ypur family like the royals you are.

If it works, it is the best ice I have had. However, in the 6 weeks I have had it, I have ran into multiple issues. It squeals loudly if I dont clean it about every half tank of side tank. Looked it up, and it appears to be that the motor or Steel Ice Engine is frozen. Says it is normal for it to do it once in a while for about 3 minutes, and then go into a defrost mode. It rarely only lasts a few minutes followed by a defrost. Have had it do that for 20 minutes straight before. annoying that I have to use the hot water cleaning method daily to avoid this, but whatever, the ice is great. However, the tubes that are outside of the machine are absolutely trash. They both turned a weird yellow color in a week. So I used the provided descaling powder and it didnt help. Worse, after about a month the tube that connects to the side tank, when removing it, ripped off at the point where it connects. Ok cut it at the rip to try to see if it would still work, it did. Another 2 weeks later and it ripped again, but this time the rip ran down the tube making it way too short to reach anywhere near the side tank. I get my water from the fridge, with a filter that was replaced in June, and has had no issues with multiple other similar devices. Not sure if maybe mine sat on a shelf somewhere and the tubes went bad, but have overall had a terrible luck with this.

Have had our ice maker for a week now without any issues. I've seen alot of reviews and people post about the unit not lasting long out of the box. We did leave ours sit upright for 24 hours before plugging in since there's a compressor in there. None of the instructions state you have to do this but I think anyone with knowledge of compressors would recommend it. I'm not sure that's the issues with the bad reviews or if it's truly hit or miss if you get a unit that runs longer then a week. Will update if anything changes. Only did 4 stars because the unit is maintenance heavy with weekly cleaning cycles that have taken 20 ish minutes each time but other then that it's made great ice and is really not loud to us in our household. Ice stays for a long time within the tray and I've only seen it time out a few times and not make ice again without pushing the button and each time is was recommended a self-clean. Update 8/20 been 40 days without issue I did update the review to 5 stars as it's actually been a extremely nice ice maker the cleaning is not a huge deal. Maybe 20 minutes a week and most of that is sitting there doing other things while it runs a few cycles to run the bleach out. No weird noises so hopefully letting the unit sit before turning on did something or it's truly just some units are defective out of the box. Haven't seen any gross things in the ice so far and we use tap water ran through a under sink filter on its own separate drinking line. I will tear this thing down one day and inspect the interior resivours that you can't see and update if there's any mold. We run the cleaning cycle every time it pops up which has been about every 7 ish days and descale cycle once so far so we will see how our water and cleaning cycles keep the unit clean over time. Also suggest placing it near a sink so you can just turn the unit to drain it for the cleaning cycles it wouldn't be fun to have to lug it over or drain into a bucket everytime.

If you love Sonic ice as much as I do, this ice maker is a game changer! It makes the perfect little pebbled ice that is so similar to the ice you get at Sonic. The texture is exactly what I was looking for, and it makes my drinks so much more enjoyable. I use it for everything from iced coffee to soda and water! I will say, this machine is a little bit of a labor of love because it does require regular, thorough cleaning and maintenance to keep it working properly. It’s definitely not a machine you can completely forget about, and you have to stay on top of keeping it clean. That said, for me, it is absolutely worth it! Having that perfect chewable pebble ice at home whenever I want is amazing. If you're an ice lover and have been searching for that Sonic-style ice, this machine is definitely worth considering!

DO NOT BUY!!!! Six weeks after buying this it stopped making ice. The de-scale will not go off the filter. Will not go off the lights. I’ve called customer service at Amazon. They told me it’s been six weeks. You’re beyond the 30 day window. We can’t help you so I called GE customer Service, I was instructed to blow on the back tubes which I was doing repeatedly. The tech said she could not hear me blowing and I’m like well. I don’t know what to tell you I’m blowing in the tubes as you’re telling me to do and she said well, I have to hear you blowing in the tubes and I said I don’t know how to make you hear me blowing in the tubes on the back of the machine and she said will call us back when you can cooperate. I can’t help you and hung up on me so I’ve paid $500 for this machine. It worked for six weeks. I’m disabled on a fixed income and Amazon‘s attitude is too bad and GE didn’t think that I was blowing in the tubes as they told me to do and hung up on me. Do not buy this machine.

We absolutely love this ice maker. It makes ice quickly and has worked great for us from day one. I know some reviews mentioned that it's noisy, but honestly, that hasn't been an issue in our home. It looks nice on the counter, and we use it several times a day. Before buying it, we were constantly picking up bags of ice every few days. Now we always have ice ready whenever we need it, which has been really convenient. The price was great, the machine works exactly as expected, and I'd definitely buy it again. Very happy with this purchase.

I mean we really want to love this ice maker but what is with GE? They know of the problems with the machine and don't fix it. It should be a 5 star machine all day long except for the known problems with squealing noice, pump failure, etc. just google it everyone wants to love it but if it dose not work def not worth the money!! I have owned three of them and thought with the new release "Ultra" they would have corrected these problems but guess not, newest one squealed like a stuck pig two weeks in. Too Bad, once again I really want to love this machine. Come on GE FIX THIS MACHINE!!!

This makes ice fairly quickly and ice is truely nugget (chewy) ice. I am treating myself to this for an upcoming party I am hosting and using in addition to a bullet ice maker. So, my water is very bad. We don't drink it until it goes through 3 filter steps including a Pro One gravity filter, so very clean. This is the water I am using in the ice maker. Things I have learned this week. The auxillary tank will only be used for parties. Do not add more water than you can use before turning off. (The bullet ice maker melts back in to the reservoir and can't over flow) This pulls from the aux. tank immediately and if left to melt would flood your counter. I have used for 5 days and it is already saying I need to run the sanitizing program (which will use up several gallons of pre filtered water) (yes I ran the initial set up of three tanks flushing). I think they will want me to change the internal filter often $$$ as it is alreay lit up. There is no programing to turn it on and off. (Ah, to wake up to ice for my morning coffee). I really like the ice but I am wondering how often it will be worth it to turn this on (I cannot use the ice maker in the fridge as this goes through only one filter) so I am pretty motivated, and still. I like the blue color. It doesn't take up too much room but it really needed to be backed to a wall (the back is ugly). Noise is acceptable.
