Directions were a tad confusing, had to resort to YouTube for some help. Larger than I expected, but that is my fault for not actually taking a tape measure and checking the dimensions on my countertop, but it also makes more ice than I expected! Getting the extra water tank on the side is a no brainer, no guessing if I need to add water! I encourage getting that. I see some report loud noise. The only time I heard that, was during set-up and clean mode. Did not last long. While it is making ice, mine is very quiet. Very glad I upgraded!!!

I didn’t want to love this nugget icemaker. It’s insanely expensive and it’s HUGE, literally almost as big as my microwave. I’d been eyeing it for years (literally), as GE upgraded its features and glowing reviews multiplied online, but I couldn’t bear the price and inevitably ended up buying less expensive (though still pricey) machines by Whynter & Gevi. Both machines made good “sonic” ice, were relatively quiet, had self-cleaning modes… and died within the year. (* The Whynter is a remarkably & uniquely low-profile size, but the Gevi is almost as big as the Opal). I’m in Colorado, where the water is very hard, so I cleaned the machines religiously and used filtered/purified water (which got expensive, off-setting the cheaper upfront cost), but the ice still started to taste bad over time, long before the machines grinded to a stop. I actually bought insurance on the Whynter, anticipating the short lifespan after the Gevi croaked, but when it took weeks to jump through all the hoops and file a claim, I decided to try out this premium Opal. What a difference! This nugget icemaker IS expensive AND huge- but it’s awesome. The nugget ice is perfect and the ice bin is so big. I got the side tank, but I don’t really need it, the main water reservoir is plenty to fill the large ice bin. But best of all, the ice tastes great! I only drink bottled water and with the other machines, I had to make sure it was cold when pouring it over ice or it would melt the ice and taste bad. No amount of cleaning/descaling helped and I was left dumping out gallons of bottled water because the ice had melted and the water was undrinkable. Not the case with this machine! The internal filter makes a huge difference and I use regular tap water to fill it. Even when the ice melts entirely, the water still tastes like bottled water. Total game-changer. Worth the price and the counter space.

I honestly wouldn’t buy one of these. The ice is incredible and the idea is great. But the machine is terrible. Mine died about six weeks after I bought it. Just stop making ice. Of course the return period on Amazon is one month or less. Had to play a terrible game with GE to get them to return it. Once I return it, they didn’t respond for over a week. I had to email them again to get them to recognize that I had sent the icemaker to them and then they said they would ship it to me within the week. It’s been over a week and I still haven’t received it. So I am three months into having an icemaker that I’ve used for six weeks. They made sure to let me know that the warranty period is not extended based on the fact that I haven’t had the icemaker. I’ve bought one of these before and it also had an unfortunate ending. Also, these machines are very labor-intensive as far as keeping them clean and running. If you don’t clean it regularly, you will get mold. Certainly not worth money..

We have had this machine for 6 months so far. We have had zero issues with the machine. It performs wonderfully and the descaler cartridges help with the keeping the unit clean. You have to perform multiple cleaning cycles before use to get rid of the squeaky noises but compared to other units I have had this one has been the best.

Just got the Opal 2.0 Ultra in today. There was a little more setup involved over the cheaper icemaker we were replacing, BUT the cheaper icemaker did not have filters or an external water reservoir. (We were replacing the cheaper ice maker because we couldn't get it cleaned decently eventhough we had only ever used bottled water for it.) We are looking forward to cleaner ice and a system designed to be maintained for cleanliness. Once we got it going, the first thing we noticed was how much quieter it was compared to the older cheaper icemaker. The next thing we noticed was how quickly it made the first ice. (Just a couple of minutes before the first few pieces were in the bin). We have held off on buying one of these due to the price. So far we are kicking ourselves for not getting one sooner... I will update this review in the future and let you know how well it holds up.

Fast, chewable, nugget ice, at home on demand just like you'd get from Sonic or Chick-fil-A. My wife loved it as her Big gift, our guest's love the easy access to the countertop ice maker. My only complaints is that it can be loud and it does require a frequent maintenance schedule to sanitize and descale.

The ice is amazing, when it gets made. My machine started making terrible noises after 4 weeks (just after the Amazon return period) and although I sterilize it and clean it weekly it continues to make horrible noises. When I reached out to GE, they acknowledged the machines may make terrible noises and it is a known issue. I don't think they are doing anything to fix the issue. They will not honor the warranty unless you e-mail them several times and talk to their customer service team that tells you to clean the unit.

If I could pick 3.5 instead of 3, I would. I like the ice machine (have owned it a bit over a week so far), but... there are two main issues that I haven't seen others bring up in reviews -- aside from the noise itself, which is annoying but you can probably get used to it. My two main concerns: 1. The unit has no way, either on the device or through the app (AFAICT, anyway) to tell it "stop making ice right now". It will cycle on when it thinks it's time to make ice, and you can't say "no, please don't right now, try again later". You might be doing that because you don't want the noise at that time... or maybe you just think there's plenty of ice and/or you don't want to refill the water at that point. Anyway... you want to stop it? The only way is to turn the unit off. But that's not good. Turning it off means it won't turn on and try again later. It will just stay off. And also, I *think* being off actually stopped the refrigeration too, so the ice already made melted. Not good. You really should be able to just interrupt/pause the ice making cycle easily, while keeping the unit otherwise on and in normal mode. 2. This one is a HUGE miss in my opinion: the ice drawer is a little too easy to accidentally leave partially ajar, but there's NO alarm (light, noise, anything) on the unit to tell you that, nor does the app alert you. Even the most basic refrigerators out there have a door open alarm if you leave it too long. I cannot believe this unit doesn't have something like that, especially given that it's a the ultra 2.0 top of the line device. A "drawer open alarm" is not optional IMO, it's minimum expected. Shocked it's not on here.
