I bought this ac unit after cross referencing over three different websites. It came highly recommended. I need an ac unit due to susceptibility to heat induced migraine. My brother installed into the front window. After he left, I plugged it in. It turned on for about 30 seconds and lit up. I pushed the power button and the power turned on for about 10 seconds. It clicked and turned itself off. I thought maybe it had blown a fuse. The light that was plugged into the same outlet was still lit though and the green light on the end of the plug showing power was still lit. I reset it on the plug... nothing. I unplugged it and plugged it back into the outlet... nothing. I replaced the adapter (I had to use an adapter that created a three prong to a two prong plug. Should not have been a big deal.)... nothing. I turned off the power to the outlet downstairs in the fusebox and turned it back on... nothing. I tore the machine apart, looking for a reset button on the interior of the unit... nothing. I replaced the batteries in the remote... nothing. I took it out of the window and plugged it into a different outlet... nothing. At that point, I decided that it wasn't worth the effort to troubleshoot any longer. It was obviously a dud. Therefore, I am returning it for a refund. When I receive my money, I will be heading to the hardware store to purchase an ac unit in person. Do better Amazon! I am disappointed. I rarely ever have to return anything to amazon because it doesn't work right out of the box. ... show more

Overall it could be a great unit and it does cool amazingly well. The issue is the rattle noise that turns it from being mostly silent mode into "turn it off" mode. I should have listened to the reviews that talk about the annoying rattle noise and purchased another manufacturer. Unfortunately you won't know if your unit will rattle until you install the entire thing and then you are faced with removing it and returning it or following warranty which is not fun for a 100lb+ unit. I may go through GE warranty but the horror stories of delays and run around sounds dreadful and potentially not worth all the extra headache. ... show more

The noise is very loud. 44db sounds like 80db. When the unit starts up it makes a rattle sound inside and then it goes away but I each time is a joke! Med and high fan speeds are the same on high always Quiet mode? What is that ? The remote control only works in front of the unit responds 5 mins later after the bottom press or never at all. I had so many hopes for this AC and I will never buy another GE window AC unit. This was a test that failed miserably I guess Chinnesse made products are better. ... show more

    • Unit lasted only 1.5 seasons--inexcusable!

I bought this unit at 10,000 BTUs few years ago, and I loved it. It was quiet, I could control it from my phone. And it worked beautifully. But after 1.5 seasons, it died. And GE refused to repair it. GE offered me some pathetic discount or rebate deal on another unit. The deal was so paltry that I knew I was better off just buying another unit from another manufacturer. Not only will I never buy a GE AC again, I won't buy anything from GE. So please, do yourselves a favor and do not buy this unit. I now have a very reliable LG, which also has the inverter technology. When the technician installed the new unit, he was familiar with the problems with the GE unit that whe was removing, as he another client whose GE unit lasted only one season. There are tons of more teliable ACs to buy. ... show more
