  • I absolutely love this detector!!!
I absolutely love this detector and would give it 10 stars if possible. I've been a dirt fisher for about 5 years now so I thought I would upgrade from my Bounty Hunter Time Ranger(a decent detector in it's own right) to a Garrett. I was saving up for an AT Pro but then this gem became available and boy howdy am I glad. I was literally waiting on my front porch for the UPS dude to deliver it, I'm in my mid 40's and I felt like I was 10 years old again waiting for Christmas morning. I had been watching the 3 very informative and in depth manufacturer videos on Youtube over and over so when I received the 400 I had it assembled and was at an old local park that has been there since the 20's swinging away 30 mins after opening the box. I had been to this particular park several times before but not with the Ace 400 and I was blown away with it's capabilities. I was hitting coins at 8-9 inches through trash and junk that myself and many others had missed and I'm not talking crappy ass modern clad either. I recovered everything from Indian Heads to Walking Liberties and had no idea that these older coins were even there this whole time. I'm now systematically going to all the places I had previously visited and my results thus far have been more than pleasing. The 400 is very easy to learn how to use and beyond accurate, the headphones that come with it are very nice, small and comfortable, not big and bulky like the rapper headphones in a studio pair, plus the volume control is a nice touch. My one and only complaint is that the "included" coil cover was not included in my order, but I procured one for $15 because a coil cover is a must in my opinion. So, in conclusion, the Ace 400 is a superb mid-level machine, accurate, easy to use and if an object is there it will find it up to roughly 10" depending on size and conditions. Oh, watch the Youtube manufacturer videos before you use it, they are a great learning resource. 5-9-16- Update, I bought a second Ace 400 as a gift from a different seller on Amazon. I was a bit ticked off because this order did not have the "included" coil cover in it either!!!! Neither box had obvious tampering and I am unsure why I was the lucky one and didn't receive a coil cover in either order. If it were not for the quality and performance of the Ace 400, I would never buy anything from Garrett again, If you advertise something, ya best deliver or it just makes you look like a big fat LIAR!! 6-7-16-Update, I contacted Garrett and they sent me the missing coil covers, the missing cover issue has been settled. I still love the Ace 400 & would still give it 5 stars as it has already paid for itself two fold and I'm well on my way to an AT Pro. ... show more

Well made, easy to assemble, sensor is good, communicates precisely, water proof, great customer support. We have only come upon ordinary metals, but it finds them accurately. Awesome upgrade.

  • great detector for the price
great for beginners good sound tone it is a little loud when you hit a high number 71-99 but it comes with head phones with volume control the coil cover is good quality but it can be a pain to put on its very tight but that's not a bad thing you don't want sand and mud getting between the coil and the cover it will damage the coil over time great depth and fast recover speed there's not much difference between the at pro and the 400 as far as the depth and recover speed goes both have the same stock coil its a little on the heavy side so it might be a little difficult for a small child to use its very well built the only down side i see after hundreds of hours of use is the target separation between two targets is iffy if you have a lot of trash in the area I have found a lot of good stuff with this detector ... show more

  • I’m a former whites electronics user
Style: ACE 400
Due to health and multiple surgeries I’ve been out of the game for 10-12 years. Couldn’t swing one easily due to the surgeries and got aggravated and sold all my gear. Now even though I’ll likely be plucking coins as I’m on a cane I’m heck bent to hunt again. My wife who’s my partner in the hunt loves to pinpoint dig and recover. Nope! Guys I ain’t lying. I got my smaller, more preferred sized coil in today so I put it on and we walked out in the yard. I think a few cars slowed down to watch the old guy with a cane in one hand and detector in the right hand and my wife following me. Well I got around and used it pretty good but the old relic hunts of the past will be missed unless I find a civil war camp on clean level ground. But who knows. Hey I’m near 71 so I do what I gotta do. I went with Garrett just for a change. The old ones served me well years ago but so much has changed. The technology. I just wanted to try another. The thing is a breeze to control if you have any experience at all and easily learned. Tip: I found YouTube vids on it that was quicker for me to relate to. The pre programmed modes are very nice. They run a lot quieter than what I’m used to. For example coin mode is notched out perfectly for US coins and others I imagine and you don’t hear hardly anything till it hits a predefined signal. And you can modify any if you want. And one custom you set yourself. And all recovered to factory settings easily. It has the VDI numbers I’m used to from my former Whites. For the money I believe it’s gonna be a very good upper mid grade machine. ... show more

  • Bad SNR
Style: ACE 400
I was disappointed with my Ace 400. It couldn't detect coins through air at the distances that many reviews say theirs worked. Maybe it was a bad unit; if so, be aware that bad units exist. Aside from the iron audio, I didn't find any of the "smart" features to work very well. I think it is overprocessing the signal, and that I'd be better off with a more analog model. In its quest to turn everything into a "beep/no beep" decision, it wipes out a lot of the information available from the other circuitry. Most of all, my unit was extremely unrepeatable. Drop a quarter in the grass and go over it at the same distance and speed over and over and it's completely unpredictable if it will beep or not. After fiddling a lot with modes, notching, sensitivity, I couldn't get it to reliably differentiate targets from trash, or even targets from air. It seems to find the smallest rusty nail while missing the large aluminum bar next to it. I'd recommend going with something cheaper and analog based, or more expensive with competent signal processing. ... show more
