  • Very accurate and functional
I am a private pilot and I fly a lot in various types of weather. My onboard GPS system is great but I wanted to use apps like foreflight and Garmin pilot and my phone gps didn't work all too well. The connection is simple but for most phones and tablets you need an app to enable an external gps source. I use one called "Bluetooth GPS" and it makes the connection seamless. The lights on the device are a little confusing at first, so I'll explain. The unit when powered on will flash blue and green. Green flashing indicates searching for GPS signal and flashing blue when looking for connection. The unit when connected will be solid blue and no other color should show. When charging the device will be a orange (and if not connected, flashing blue). when completed charging it will be a flashing orange. The device will power on when plugged in and will stay on until charged. There is no way to avoid this, and that kind of bothered me since if im charging it in my truck its flashing lights at me. Battery life is great and I have never had it fail mid flight as long as I charged it before hand. I've taken it on 6 hours flights with no problem. It even works when my phone gps fails and im driving. It is far more accurate then the internal gps unit so I connect whenever I need reliability in my directions. Works with both android and apple devices, which is one of the reasons I bought it. It has functioned without failure for 3 years now, great product. ... show more

  • Easy to set up, works perfectly.
I love this device. On my first trip out I paired it with my wifi-only iPad Air 2's iHikeGPS app, which uses topo maps for visuals. Ignore the gripes about the power switch - this issue has been fixed and the switch works just as it should. I wasn't sure if I would need a belt holster, but turns out the receiver gets a good signal from your pocket. The track was perfect with no gaps or distortion. Having the nice-sized iPad screen showing a track in real time is awesome. Some people may prefer the Bad Elf which attaches directly to the iPad, but I have had good experiences with Garmin, and I'm glad I made this choice. UPDATE: several weeks after I got this, iOS updated to 8.3 which had a problem pairing with bluetooth GPS devices, including this one, so it didn't work. Some time later on a forum I saw a hint to update my GLO software (firmware?) to 2.7. I did this at the Garmin update site (which is none too easy to find) and now it works fine again. Garmin should post some prominent notices about this, but they haven't. MEANWHILE, while my GLO wasn't working, I bought a Bad Elf GPS with a lightning connector plug-in. That too works very well. It did not quite fit my iPad Air 2 with the Apple smart case (the hard case), so I either had to pull off a corner of the case or (eventually) get an extender cable. The GLO and Bad Elf seem to be equally good at reception. The GLO is a little slicker because it doesn't hang off the iPad, and the Bad Elf is a bit simpler to use because it's right there and you won't forget to shut it off. I wish I knew which unit had a longer lasting battery, but I haven't been able to tell. ... show more

  • Conked out after 3 years and 10 months of use; cost of ownership $25.83/year. Will buy again
Update: 3 years and 10 months of ownership, it conked out. I don't know if it's the battery or the device itself. I've tried using a different mini usb cable (yes, it is a mini usb) but it wont power up or charge anymore. So at $99 when I bought it originally, this comes to about $2.15/month or $25.83/year cost of ownership. I will buy again the 1st generation GLO. The 2nd gen DOES NOT have user-replaceable batteries. Update 2.5 years later and it still works. 5star for that. I now use a samsung a50 and the GPS works great. Wish i could buy an extra battery though, when it finally conks out. (old review) my android phone is a samsung galaxy grand prime value edition, rooted. I also use bluetooth gps app to link the glo and the phone. The glo works as advertised, improving tum by turn navigation in waze and google maps over the internal gps receiver. satellite lock in just seconds after power up. problems appear when i use a gps recorder while using waze or maps (or both). a lag is created whereby my position in the turn by turn apps is delayed by (i estimate) as much as 10 seconds. i was using ulysse speedometer as my gps recorder. it seems my phone cannot handle gps logging at 10 hz update rate while using the navigation apps. if i use the speedometer by itself, the speed reading becomes ultra responsive, and the tracks i make really become super accurate. i solved the problem by using the "gps logger app" instead of ulysse speedometer. gps logger allows me to set the refresh rate to 1hz. this allows the turn by turn apps to run correctly and in synch with my actual position. you may ask why i would REDUCE the refresh rate as the 10hz refresh rate is the main selling point of the glo. this is because, even at 1hz, the accuracy of the glo (upto 1 meter, usually 2-3) is still better than the internal gps receiver (8 meters at best, rarely). so i still get Garmin-caliber accuracy at a rate that my hardware can handle. ... show more
