  • For someone who doesn't hav a smart phone
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps + Traffic (USA + CAN) - S Pattern: GPS Navigator
Annoying to me to use one of these, but my husband refuses to get a smart phone, so for the price of a used smart phone, I bought him this Garmin 51. I saw some on the Garmin website a lot cheaper than on Amazon, but he had already used this one. Plus, I couldn't figure out how to purhase the other one on the Garmin website. His old 2012 nuvi finally bit the dust. ... show more

  • Two Important Things Garmin Doesn't Tell You
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps (USA) Pattern: GPS Navigator
Important! Two things the manufacturer doesn't tell you is that: 1. The device must be fully charged before you update the maps. By full, they mean full. 2. When you update the maps, you should not interrupt the process as your Garmin device is likely to crash and become useless. Also the map update will take around six or eight hours, and that's with using a high speed Internet connection. The Garmin server is very slow, and Garmin doesn't care. I have no sense of direction, something I inherited from my mother's side of the family. I bought a Garmin Navigator many years ago and never looked back. When my antique finally bit the big one, I bought a replacement. Garmin has seen fit to improve the user interface. In some cases this was a great idea, and in others - not so much. There's a definite learning curve, and it's steep. The designers have tried to squeeze too many icons onto a small screen, which shouldn't surprise anyone, but which was a bad idea. Additionally, there is no quick-fun-and-easy way to tell the Garmin device that you've just discovered the road ahead is closed, and you need a detour. Likewise, the map has errors in it. Very few, but the errors are there, and there's no easy way to inform the device that your real destination is three blocks west of where Garmin thinks it is. Otherwise, it's a good system. ... show more

  • Works great. Few Quirks.
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps + Traffic (USA + CAN) - S Pattern: GPS Navigator
Got this gps for moving. I plugged it into the PC and updated it. I figured I’d test it at work... I love it. So... boss can text me an address or a client can call and this thing still tells me where I’m going. Which is nice having it separate from my phone. Through the app you can send the address by copying and pasting from your texts, or your phone’s contacts. I love this feature. This thing works in both Alaska and the lower 48. I tested it down in Pennsylvania and New York also. No issues. Even gave pretty accurate construction zone info. The bad: the address feature on this is weird sometimes. Like if you’re going somewhere on the other side of the state, but there’s another store closer (like a specific dealership, but there’s a chainsaw dealer closer to you...), it automatically inputs the closer store. Not the end of the world though. You just have to manually enter the address instead of syncing it. Sometimes. It also will give you some weird routing. Like making the lefts to make a right. Sometimes. The other thing is the traffic does link from your phone and the app. Which is good and bad. If you have a GPS because you’re in an area with poor cell phone service, well, that feature is no good, right Garmin?... But overall I like this device, and I’m happy I went with it. Keep it updated, and learn its quirks before you need to use it, and I’m sure you’ll be happy you have it. I’m rating it at four even with the quirks because of its usefulness and ease of use. ... show more

  • Not a Good Replacement for my Old Nuvi
Size: 5" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps + Traffic (USA + CAN) - S Pattern: GPS Navigator
I got this to replace a Nuvi that died unceremoniously. The Nuvi would tell me how many miles to my destination, my elevation, and other items on the right hand side. This doesn't do that. It just has your arrival time in the bottom right. I've tried playing with it and it just doesn't seem to have those options. It works, it's functional, but if you're used to the Nuvi, you're going to be disappointed. ... show more

  • Maybe yes, maybe no. At least next time
Size: 6" Style: W/ Lifetime Maps (USA + CAN) Pattern: GPS Navigator
I.m very disappointed that this unit did not include a A.C. battery re charger, which I had to purchase separately. When the weather gets cold (and it will) you don't expect me to re charge this with a car battery?. I don't know how this works in Canada. Also, when I entered my home address, the unit said 2 minutes, I did this in my living room. C'mon Garmin, YOU"RE BETTER THAN THIS!!. Heads up. I wish a response. Long story short, I purchased this product on reputation. Did I make a mistake?, do tell. ... show more
