My 2nd try on one of these. The 1st one having a very 'dull' blade. This blade is somewhat sharp and seems to do the trick. Be careful as none of these seem to understand 'inside diameter'. They all measure the outside it seems, so figure about 1 inch small than reported. Do plan on bolting her down to a stump otherwise it will bounce around on you. 18 inches is about longest piece you can put in it or it will bind. You will need a 4 pound sledge. I tried a ballpien and it just didn't do the trick. Wear good leather gloves! Pretty good deal on sale and does an OK job. Kind of macho to play with too.... I like that. ... show more

    • Kindling Cracker, not a Wood Splitter

Love it! I go through about 6 cords of hardwood per winter, and occasionally need some kindling. Previously, I'd grab a piece of dry firewood and split off some kindling with a hatchet and small sledge. As each piece split off, it would fly away. After splitting a few pieces into kindling, I'd then crawl around on my hands and knees to collect the errant pieces. It was always a chore I hated. No more crawling around with this baby! I've put the hatchet away, too. I only need the hammer (3#) from now on, so the whole process is MUCH safer. The upper ring catches the pieces as they split off, so it's quick and easy to collect the small pieces. The blade is recessed several inches from the top, so the hammer won't hit it. Others have mentioned the blade is not sharp, but it doesn't need to be. It's a wedge for splitting, not cutting. If you're trying to split whole pieces of green wood, you'll be disappointed. (I have an electric splitter for that.) This device is designed for safely making smaller pieces of kindling from dry medium size pieces, not the initial splitting when cutting and stacking green firewood. ... show more

As other reviews have stated, you should lag bolt it to a flat block ( I used a 12” wide x 14” high stub cut off from a piling ) of wood 12” or more in diameter. Someone also stated the manufacturers measurement was on the outer diameter ( OD ) and not the critical inside of the steel ring inner diameter. Bottom line is don’t use any split log larger than 6” diameter, otherwise it will jam, and you’ll be breaking out the reciprocating saw. The logs should be kiln dried as well. It really works well for making small kindling pieces, once you follow the tips outlined here and other reviews. I use a 3-5 lb small sledge. Do wear safety glasses and gloves, as there will be some flying chards of wood on occasion ... show more

    • Handy way to split kindling

It works great. I pick out pieces of firewood with a straight grain and split them with an axe to get pieces small enough to easily fit in the kindling splitter, approximately 3"x 3" or 4" x 4". I put it in the splitter and tap with a large hammer just enough to hold it upright then I hit firmly with the hammer and keep splitting in half until the pieces are as small as I want. I have mine screwed to a large log to keep it in place. I definitely recommend. ... show more

This came today and I am satisfied with the construction but the bit has no edge. I will need to break out my files to put an edge on and then I can write a “real” product review. If it can take an edge and hold it I will adjust my rating accordingly.

I got this for my dad who uses a wood burning stove for heat. He is always needing kindling and I thought this would be a safe and easier way to cut kindling. I'll write an update once I get some feedback from my dad and my son.

Yes, fun. Im in my 60s, disabled and its gard for ne to chop kindling by myself if hubby isnt home. I bought this in hopes that it will give me that independence. And I am very happy, in fact, I love it. My husband bolted it to a sturdy stump, one that tapers out at the base so it wont tip over. A good wack or 2 with a short handled mallot and it splits beautifully. Put the same piece through again to get smaller pieces. Really glad I bought this. Will split 1/4 chunks too.
