I really like the concept of this seed spreader, but I got it too late (or too early) in the year for it to be practical yet. So far, I like the design. The top comes off easily by twisting, and it locks back into place. There are several different sized holes on the twisting plate to match what you need to spread, sort of like a parmesan cheese dispenser. The 1-liter size makes it so it'll never be too heavy, but that also means it will need to be refilled often. I will mostly use this to spread weed n feed in the springtime. My property is 9,000 square feet and about half of it is grass. The two other methods I've used is putting on gloves and throwing the stuff, and filling a plastic bag with it and poking some holes in it and walking around. Both of those methods are a pain in the butt. I look forward to using this instead next time I gotta do it. In the meantime, I'll have this ready in case it snows this year. This will be easier for spreading de-icer on the walkway and driveway. It'll be important to clean this out after de-icing and before using this for seed, but the design makes it easy to do so. ... show more

This product looks nice and was so easy to use. You simply turn the green top a little and take the top right off. The handle is easy to grip and I was able to dip the entire thing right into my salt bag to grab what I needed. The top was a little harder to turn once it got some salt pellets stuck in it but was easy enough to dislodge. And at one point I was able to even just use it without the top on. I think this product is wonderful for anything that you need to spread. The product gives you the ability to determine how fast/how much you wants to come out at once which is wonderful. The only annoyance was that when I put the entire thing in the bag some got into the handle. But that is simply an annoyance and truly not a big deal. ... show more

I have been using a handheld spreader with a crank that distributes fertilizer over a wide area and this is not a good replacement for that, but for small areas where you want better control over the distribution of the fertilizer (for example to keep it off of plant foliage), it is perfect. I tested it with pelleted elemental sulfur used to lower the pH in soil around my acid-loving plants and it worked very well set at the smallest distribution holes. Anything finer than that, like very fine seeds or powdered substances, would not work well. It takes just a bit of practice to get a rhythmic motion from side to side but I was quickly able to get an even pattern of distribution and to control the amount of the application. ... show more

The spreader is of a solid build. It comes with different spread settings, and it's very convenient to adjust them while spreading. It can be used not only for seeds, but also ice melt, baking soda into driveway cracks. It's a very convenient tool and good to have.

What a nifty gadget. I previously spread grass seed by hand and it ended up in a haphazard pattern. With this seed spreader, you simple load your grass seed into it from the top. Set the opening to the size you want. As you walk around the yard, simple shake this to disperse the seed in an nice even pattern. It handles easily and is light, so it's not tiring to use. The Garden Guru is in the category of a simple but effective gadget. It is great for spreading seeds in smaller areas where a spreader would be too difficult to maneuver. It took me a few minutes to figure out that you had to rotate the top to open the thing up (see photo). Once you’ve mastered that, fill up the cup with grass seed or fertilizer and put the top back on. There is a dial on the top with different sized holes that let more or less of the product out when you shake the device. Adjust it to your liking and spread the seed. It’s as simple as that. I found that I got a much more even application than if I had just grabbed a handful of seed and spread it manually. That is the reason to use the Garden Guru in my opinion. This handheld seed spreader turned out to be way better than I expected for the price. The twist cap with four different hole sizes actually works great—you can dial in the exact flow you want, whether you’re tossing down grass seed or fertilizer in the spring. It rotates smoothly, feels durable, and the whole thing is surprisingly lightweight but still strong. The bright green and matte black look sharp too, which is a nice bonus for something that’s just going to live in the garage or shed for years.
