Nice machine with some extras
I got this because it was the cheapest easily available machine that’s made in Italy. Although mostly plastic, it’s well built, and I appreciate that it doesn’t come with a bunch of cheap accessories that would likely end up in the trash. Coffee is good, steam wand is good, usage is relatively straightforward, and the manual is easy to understand when getting started. One thing not specified on the listing is that it came with a commercial portafilter basket. Gaggia’s own website and many reviews online say it only comes with pressurized baskets, so this was a nice surprise. There’s also some general instructions regarding the difference in the manual, so it’s not a fluke. I purchased from Whole Latte Love, and this was mentioned on their independent website’s listing for this machine; I can’t speak to whether the basket is included when buying directly from Amazon. Comparing to some other machines in this price range, the design and controls of this are really simple, which appeals to me because it’s less widgets on an expensive appliance to break. The inside looks really serviceable, too, and Gaggia part availability is good so I’m optimistic it’s not a throwaway if something breaks. I’m a bad barista so I’ll update this if anything else I missed by virtue of my own ignorance comes up down the road. Also, the steam wand can be converted between panarello and single hole just by sliding the panarello extension off, if that’s of interest to you. And it makes hot water for tea in under 30 seconds. Nice.

Buying this product through Amazon is a waste of time.
Received the Gaggia espresso evolution machine and it is defective. The on switch just blinks and will not power the machine. I called the company but they have no live technical support. I also went to website and the solutions that were recommended were not helpful, For a $200 + product they should test the machine to make sure it is working. Very disappointing experience and I will not trust or buy Gaggia products. I also don't like their apparent policy of charging a restocking fee for their defective product.

Good machine for a beginner
For the price, this is a good deal. I'm only giving it 2 stars because the machine I received was faulty. I'v had a Baby Gaggia for 15 years, purchased from Whole Latte Love, along with a Rancillo grinder also purchased there. After many years and uses ,the boiler cracked on the baby gaggia so I purchased this one, since the price was so reasonable. It is a nice little machine, light, easy to operate, but unfortunately faulty. I would recommend it if it's your first espresso machine.

Good Espresso, Not Great Milk Foam
I've had a DeLonghi espresso machine at my house for about 5 years now and I love it. I got this one to help with the long nights of volunteering at the high school robotics shop. The initial setup was very easy and it didn't take long to run water through the whole system and get it ready to go. The machine comes with almost everything you need to get started including a coffee scoop with a tamp on the end. The tamp is plastic and a little flimsy, but it'll get you started. You will still need a milk pitcher for steaming milk and I would recommend some glass espresso/shot glasses for pulling the espresso. The espresso shots pulled from the machine were decently good. There wasn't as much crema on the top as I usually like, but the taste is good enough for this small beginner machine. My big gripe with this machine is that while the steam wand does work, it's almost impossible to make microfoam on. I tried as many ways I could think of to get it to aerate correctly, but no matter how little I pulled the wand out it only wanted to make big bubbles in my milk. The milk still tastes good, it's just not the foam that I like. This machine is mostly plastic and feels a bit cheap/fragile. It's easy enough to use and clean that it's not a terrible choice for a beginner. However, my DeLonghi was only a little more expensive and I feel like it makes a better latte all around.

Great place to start an espresso journey…or continue one
This is a new line for Gaggia, so finally it’s one of their espresso machines I can afford. It’s also made to be fairly easy for beginners, so it’s pretty straightforward to use and accepts a variety of different formats of coffee…and even allows for growth as a barista. As others have said, the enclosure is plastic, which is fine to me because I don’t spend a lot of time touching it and it doesn’t come in contact with the coffee. The water tank is plastic too, which I think it true of other Gaggias, so it doesn’t bother me. The portafilter is also plastic, at least on the outside. It’s got a weight to it that suggests the skeleton of it is metal, and I can in fact see that the basket holder is metal. I thought about trying out some aftermarket portafilters (this is a 53mm machine, according to my research), but I haven’t found one I like yet, plus I’m a little wary because my last machine wouldn’t take them because the manufacturer designed it to be proprietary, which makes me never want to buy their stuff again. Anyway, it comes with everything you’d need to make espresso the old-fashioned way: by eyeballing stuff. Right out of the box, providing you have ground espresso, milk, and more than a single cup, you can pull a shot; froth milk to make a latte, cappuccino, or whatever you order at the local coffeehouse (because that’s where you go for good coffee, right?); and determine if you need more help mastering the art of making an espresso drink. You probably will. You can keep going that way, with very limited tools, and attempt to improve your skills, or you can invest in some additional tools to help you scientifically determine how to do so. There are a ton of espresso blogs and videos out there to help, but they’ll expect you to also have the more advanced tools (like a real tamper, a WDT, an espresso scale, a frothing pitcher, and maybe a funnel). I do love little thoughtful things that help out people who don’t have all the gadgets, such as the fact that the portafilter sits level on the counter instead of inclined like a lot of other brands. It makes it easier to put grounds evenly into the basket and tamp them without making a mess or ending up with a lopsided puck. Also, it’s great to have multiple baskets, not only different sized ones. This comes with a basket for pods/single shots, double shots (both pressurized), and a traditional double shot basket (which is the norm for espresso shots these days) The water reservoir holds a pretty impressive amount of water, too (you’ll see when you have to do the machine break-in and need to empty it twice), which is great for those of us who hate having to refill often. Max and min fill lines are clearly marked and the design ensures you can always see what the water level is. The foot print is pretty small, too, which is great for smaller kitchen or ones with limited counter space. I’m trying to cut down on carbs, so I’ve decided to switch to espresso only and haven’t tried the steam wand, but I tend not to like the ones that come with attachments—I was trained on an old-school steam wand and the plastic ones (also not great) don’t thrill me, but I see that they’re sometimes needed, since microfoam can be tricky to create without some practice…and honestly, how many coffee drinks can you have a day before you’re too jittery to try? The only thing I vastly underestimated the first time I used this machine was how long it would take for the water to stop running through the portafilter once I clicked off it off. Not a fault of the machine, but if you’ve got a scale under your cup, know that it’s in the neighborhood of 10g, so get ready to turn it off early. Overall, great entry to the starter/budget espresso machine category. It’s great for casual espresso drinkers like me and I’m sure it’ll last years…until I decide to really take things to the next level and am OK with investing significantly more money to do so.

Great Epresso. Only machine of it's class with a PID controller
The reason that this machine is so great is that it's the only espresso machine in it's price range to have a PID controller, which uses algorithm to keep the machine at the proper brew temperature. Needlessto say, it makes great espresso and works beautifully. It also looks really great on the counter. Not too big, not too small.

In the process of returning it
It stopped working after a week. We tried everything and couldn’t get it to pull enough water through to get a full shot. We ended up returning it and we’re waiting on a the refund to buy a replacement of another kind. It was very pretty and felt pretty nice for the price just disappointing as it seemed to work well for others. Video from when it was pulling a shot early on.
