  • Ef-42 for Fuji X100
I purchased the Fuji X100 camera and Fuji EF-20 flash last summer. The EF-20 is way better than the camera flash and highly recommended. The EF-20 looks and handles great on the X100. It is a thing of beauty and has enough power for most use including flash inside a house. In default mode, the X100 utilizes flash as a fill flash which doesn't take a lot of power. A limitation is the EF-20 swivels for landscape ceiling bounce but doesn't work so hot for portrait shots. I took some pictures in a retail establishment a a few days ago and decided I could have used more power so bought the EF-42. It has more power but most of the time you don't need it. But sometimes you do. Also the EF-42 swivels for portrait shots. The AF assist still comes from the camera, not the EF-42 since the EF-42 is a rebranded and slightly modified Sunpak flash and not fully integrated with the Fuji X100. The EF-42 looks like an elephant on the X100 and you hope no one you sees you using it strictly on cosmetic grounds. I give the EF-42 4 stars since it does what it says but it is marketed by Fuji as top of the line for X100 and it is very top heavy so deduct a star. I use the EF-20 for most flash purposes since it is so handy and only use the EF-42 for rare occasion when I need more power or need ceiling bounce for portrait shots. ... show more

  • Dedicated TTL flash for Fuji HS-20 and X-100
This is the same flash as the Sunpak PZ42x, except it has the proprietary Fuji TTL hotshoe connection instead of the Canon or Nikon hotshoe. The price difference from the Sunpak PZ42x has been steadily narrowing, and currently the Fuji EF-42 is only about $30 more than listed prices for the Sunpak. I got this flash for my HS-20. The flash has auto and manual features, and auto-zooms with the camera in the range of 24mm-105mm (35mm format). As long as you stay in this range, the flash has great coverage. For instance I can take pictures of my neighborhood at nighttime and get perfectly illuminated shots of houses over 200 feet away (at ISO 3200). The TTL sensing can get confused from nearfield reflected light (especially in wide angle shots) and if there are any strongly reflective objects in the field, such as windows or street signs. That's probably more due to the camera auto exposure settings - if you use a manual camera mode and set it on Spot auto exposure instead of Multi or Whole field sensing, it seems to do better. One other thing I noticed, the flash works in Macro mode, but will not fire when the camera is in Super Macro mode. You can take nice close up Macro shots of small objects with the head swiveled around as a bounce flash. If you want to get a better idea of how this flash works, there are Youtube videos posted for the Sunpak PZ42x you can check out. They are the exact same flash. All in all, it's great to finally have a TTL dedicated flash for the HS-20. ... show more

  • Can't be a slave flash for X-E1
Pros: 1. Full TTL with Fuji cameras, such as X-E1 when used on camera 2. The most powerful of the current crop of Fuji flashes (GN: 42) 3. Well-made, relatively small flash 4. Versatile - can effectively be pointed in all directions. Cons: 1. Can't be an optical slave for X-E1 - i.e. can't be triggered remotely via Commander mode found on X-E1!! How is that possible?! Therefore, you have two choices if you want to use EF-42 off-camera with the Fujifilm X-System cameras: 1. Use radio controllers (Cons: Manual Mode only, the good radio controllers ones are expense, the inexpensive ones all have limitations and quirks) 2. Use off-camera shoe cord like the OC-E3 (I bought a generic, 33 ft. version of it made by YongNuo, sold under Neewer brand - "Neewer 10m 33ft TTL Off Camera Shoe Cord For Canon OC-E3 E5F"). You will retain full Fujifilm TTL capabilities, however now you have to mess with the cord. This cord works well for distances of up to 15-20 feet; that said, however, the cord moves somewhat loosely within the boxy flash connector tip (not sure what's the proper name for it). I attempted to solve this problem by applying the Gorilla glue to the space between the cord and the tip; not sure yet how well that will work. ... show more

  • Great little flash, poor customer service…
I use this flash with my X-Pro2, and used it briefly with my X-Pro1 before upgrading. Focusses fast, and provides good exposure. It's easy to manage and does a great job. One thing I wish it had integrated into the pull-out is a bounce card in addition to the diffuser that flips down. Two weeks after purchasing this unit, it fell out of my bag. The flash itself doesn't show any significant scratches and looks like it's in perfect condition. However, the red, plastic lens cover popped off with the impact and one of the legs that holds it in broke off. I tried to contact Fuji for a replacement piece and had nightmares with their customer service department. LOOOONG hold times, then they refused to send me a new piece. It is a simple snap on piece, and it's a joke that they won't replace it without sending the whole unit in. 4 stars for the flash, 1 star for the customer service for an average of 2.5 stars. I gave them 3 hear because I'd rather round up. It's a great little compact flash if you want to use a separate diffuser or don't mind more direct flash. ... show more
