  • 1997 Camry
We have a 1997 Camry, purchased new, which developed a horizontal crack about 4 inches long at the top. The crack seeped very slowly, about a half cup of water per week, but I knew it had to be repaired. I tried drying it off, roughing up with sandpaper and applying epoxy but that didn't work. I had never noticed that the top and bottom were made of plastic, but it lasted 20 years so I guess it has proved to be reliable. The car has 240K miles and, despite some cosmetic issues, is still a great car so I'll keep it until it eventually has a major failure. I've owned sports cars all my life and, although it's not a sports car, love this car's handling, responsiveness and dependability. I also have a 1986 Ford Econoline cargo van, also purchased new, which has only 64K miles... used infrequently for short trips to carry stuff. About 10 years ago its radiator sprang leaks with water shooting everywhere. I decided to replace the radiator myself, paying about $200 for the radiator. It was a horrible ordeal taking almost a full day. Remembering this experience, I dreaded replacing the Camry radiator. This radiator was much less expensive that the replacements at auto parts stores. I read the reviews and they were almost all positive, with some saying it took them only one hour from start to finish, which was very encouraging. I allowed myself an entire afternoon and took my time. It took me about 3 hours, but I did other things I saw needing doing during this time, such as removing and cleaning the overflow tank. If I had to do it again, I'm sure I could complete the job within an hour or less. Toyota's design makes the replacement very fast and efficient. Here are a few recommendations that I can make: • Look up "camry radiator replacement" YouTube. There is an excellent video guide by 1A which will apply to probably all Toyota models which this radiator will fit. • Have new antifreeze, a drain bucket and anything else you might need ready to go. After you start you obviously won't be driving this car to buy antifreeze. • Put your car on level ground. Jack up the front of each side of the car until the tires are about 2 inches off the ground and position a jack stand on each side at or near where the jacking indicators are located (see your owners manual). Use wheel chocks on the rear wheels for safety. This will give you extra space to more easily access the connections under the car. • Remove the bottom skid plate first so you'll have access to the bottom connections. You might want to notice that some bolts are slightly longer than the others, and where they go. • Go ahead and start the radiator draining before you start working on the top connections. It takes a while to drain so starting it first will save time in waiting for it to finish draining. • Be very careful in removing the electrical connections and sensors... breaking one could necessitate a very difficult repair. • Before you install the new radiator, check that the hydraulic connections are oriented properly. I found that one was at an angle which caused a strain on the hydraulic line... but it was easy to loosen and reposition. • Don't put the skid plate back on until you've had a chance to run the engine and check for leaks. Compared to replacing the radiator in my old Ford Econoline van, this was a pleasant experience. If you're reasonably handy with tools, this is a relatively easy afternoon task to do yourself and the money you save can buy you a big guilt-free night out on the town. ... show more

  • Interesting Story About My Experience With This Radiator...
I have an interesting story to tell about my experience with this Spectra radiator. I first ordered this radiator on August 14, 2014 because it was on sale for around 51 bucks. It came in very quickly and I proceeded to install it. Because I was in a rush, I accidentally broke one of the trans fluid cooling stems on the bottom of the radiator while trying to install new hoses because I forgot to lube the stem and inside of the hose (I bought new hoses and threw the old ones away). Less than happy about this, the radiator was further damaged when I sailed it across the garage and into the wall. No problem, I calmed down and ordered another one, four days later, not on sale, for around 79 bucks. The new radiator came in, and HERE'S WHERE IT GOT INTERESTING: - First, I noticed the packaging of the second radiator was far superior to the efforts of the packaging in the first radiator. Plenty of pillow packs in the second box, none in the first box. - The second radiator I received came with a brand new radiator cap; the first one did NOT. That was very uncool... - The part I accidentally broke on the first radiator was made of aluminum. The very same part on the second radiator I received was made of brass...very different as brass is far stronger and the factory original material. This to me means product consistency issues. Perhaps the first radiator I got was on sale because it was part of the crap stock they were trying to liquidate. I should also mention that the fit was excellent; it bolted up perfectly. So all this makes me think it actually was a good thing I broke the first radiator because the second one was so much better. I wish I didn't have to pay for it twice, however. Thanks; I hope this has helped somebody out there! ... show more

  • Perfect replacement for original factory radiator, but one fitting was loose
The radiator arrived promptly and was very well packaged. I was initially a bit concerned because one side was slightly bowed in (see photo) although there was no sign that the package had been handled roughly. So I suspect the slight bend might have been already present from the factory. Installation was very straight forward and this radiator was a perfect replacement for the original - all fittings were in exactly the same locations and the right size, so switching over hoses was very easy. Unfortunately there was a slight leak when I first drove the car with the new radiator and I was initially concerned that the little bend on the side might be the cause. But checking when the system was hot and pressurized showed that the leak came from one of the fittings at the bottom of the radiator where the transmission fluid came in to be cooled. Apparently this fitting hadn't been properly tightened before the radiator was shipped. Fortunately I was able to just remove the electrical fans and partly lift the radiator to get a wrench on the fitting without having to remove any hoses (or drain the antifreeze/water). So it didn't take much time or effort to fix the issue although it did give me some concern initially. Mechanically the radiator looks to me to be of solid construction and I hope it performs as well as the original (which lasted for 20 years before developing a crack in the plastic at the top). ... show more
