If you're in a 3rd floor dorm room with terrible AC and a window you can't put a window AC in, this is the unit for you. It is very quiet for an air conditioner, it's quieter than the whole-house air conditioner at my parent's house (though, that unit is right outside a single-pane window and 10 years old). At it's highest fan setting, it's about as loud as a desk fan. You can hardly notice when the compressor kicks on, it isn't much louder than the fan, just a lower tone. Very comfortable to sleep next to, very unintrusive in my daily life. It cools the air, it blasts the air, it won't fall out of your window and kill someone. I got mine for $179 on sale, and at that price, it was a fantastic deal. I am very impressed by the quality and performance of this unit. For $50 more, I may be a bit more hesitant recommending it if a window air conditioner would work in your room. Since this is a portable air conditioner, it is substantially less power efficient than a window air conditioner. It uses the same amount of electricity as an 8000 BTU window unit, with an effective cooling power of only 5500 BTUs. I'm perfectly happy with that since I pay flat rate rent which includes utilities, but you may not be so lucky. Installing the exhaust panel into my window was a bit of a challenge at first since I thought I would need a hacksaw to cut the sliding plastic panel to the right size, but I was able to make it work by scoring it in the right place repeatedly (and firmly) with a utility knife and snapping it over my leg. If you have the grip strength to force a utility knife into some industrial plastic, installation will require no special tools. Just a utility knife and a #2 Phillips head screwdriver. If you'd like to be a bit more careful and less brutish with it, a $5 hacksaw from Walmart will do the job as intended. Keep in mind, this unit is HEAVY! Felt like 50lbs at least, and I had to carry it up 3 flights of stairs. If you're on the weaker or smaller side of the human size distribution, get a friend to help you. It comes in a large box and it is very heavy on the bottom side. Also, I didn't know this when I bought it, but it comes with a super nifty little remote that has an LCD display on it telling you all the current settings, and the unit beeps when you press a button on the remote to let you know it received the command. Absolutely happy with this machine, highly recommend it. And there's NO DRAINAGE OR WATER HOSE REQUIRED unless you turn it to the dehumidifier mode! Simply fantastic, my parents had an older portable AC that required you to dump a bucket of water from it every three hours. Couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase. Air conditioning works great. It is a bit of a chore to install and the hosing comes loose sometimes, but it really does the job. It is not the smallest or quietest air conditioner but is great for cooling a large space. It did not take a ton of electricity to run and was much cheaper than running our central air. The remote does not have great reception, so we just use the buttons on the unit to control it. We tried it for heat once, but it doesn't seem meant to really heat a larger area. ... show more

I agree with many of the reviews here - cools well, remote is glitchy, exhaust hose is pretty flimsy and window panels are deficient for some sizes of windows. I purchased it over others for one reason … I needed a unit that didn’t turning off and on as temps are reached (like a different brand unit in my son’s room and most other brands I’ve shopped). I’m a pretty light sleeper and while this unit is not as quiet as I would like (50 db according to the specs), having a fan and compressor starting up and shutting down all night is way worse than a steady blowing fan, even a rather noisy one. I can’t even hear when the compressor kicks on, the fan noise is so consistent. Anyway, when I was looking at different brands and models before I bought this unit, I was hoping someone would mention this particular feature in a review since it doesn’t seem to be something that manufacturers highlight, so here is my service to light sleepers everywhere. ... show more

I owned it for two months so cant attest to durability. I bought two and when working together they take care of my 1200 square 2 brm, large living rm and separate dining rm and separate kitchen - apartment. I like that i can indicate desired temperature and the units turn on only when the temperature goes above it, which saves me on electricity. The only problem i have is that the yellow light indicator stays on even after i throughly clean both filter (yes each unit has two filters) and I cant find where in the manual it describes how to reset these. The font size in the manual are so small that it is very hard to read instructions in it. I am so glad i invested in the two of them. I do wish that the remote was easier to figure out. I think that some buttons have more than one function but again, if instructions are in the manual, due to the small font size i cant read them. The nose is the same or better than window units. I like that i can quickly install them myself and remove them, no more paying a handy man to secure window unit or remove it annually. Costers work well so you can easily move the units if you need to. ... show more

Duel car garage and it heats up like crazy, I've been through a few of these brand other bad boys. Key is to go big or go home when it comes to these units. Anything less than 14000 Btu for a duel car garage will not cut it. I've had an LG, Garrison and a few others brands but after buying a Frigidaire small fridgerator I realized they have really good compressors. So I decide to buy a frigidaire a/c unit to go with it, and after researching I found this 14kbtu one is rated 3rd best and I wasn't surprised. So I purchased it and in less than 20mins it cooled the entire duel garage to a pleasant temp. Very pleased its very powerfull 🙂 if only I knew about frigidaire compressors sooner lol you live you learn. Pro tip : only remove top hose cap to drain when when powered off for maintenance. If you leave the cap off (draining) while running ac or auto it will not perform at 100%, says so in the manual. The bottom heater hose is left on while running but NOT the top one. I don't use the heater so I just leave both caps on and remove only top cap to drain when not in use powered off. ... show more
