If you're in a 3rd floor dorm room with terrible AC and a window you can't put a window AC in, this is the unit for you. It is very quiet for an air conditioner, it's quieter than the whole-house air conditioner at my parent's house (though, that unit is right outside a single-pane window and 10 years old). At it's highest fan setting, it's about as loud as a desk fan. You can hardly notice when the compressor kicks on, it isn't much louder than the fan, just a lower tone. Very comfortable to sleep next to, very unintrusive in my daily life. It cools the air, it blasts the air, it won't fall out of your window and kill someone. I got mine for $179 on sale, and at that price, it was a fantastic deal. I am very impressed by the quality and performance of this unit. For $50 more, I may be a bit more hesitant recommending it if a window air conditioner would work in your room. Since this is a portable air conditioner, it is substantially less power efficient than a window air conditioner. It uses the same amount of electricity as an 8000 BTU window unit, with an effective cooling power of only 5500 BTUs. I'm perfectly happy with that since I pay flat rate rent which includes utilities, but you may not be so lucky. Installing the exhaust panel into my window was a bit of a challenge at first since I thought I would need a hacksaw to cut the sliding plastic panel to the right size, but I was able to make it work by scoring it in the right place repeatedly (and firmly) with a utility knife and snapping it over my leg. If you have the grip strength to force a utility knife into some industrial plastic, installation will require no special tools. Just a utility knife and a #2 Phillips head screwdriver. If you'd like to be a bit more careful and less brutish with it, a $5 hacksaw from Walmart will do the job as intended. Keep in mind, this unit is HEAVY! Felt like 50lbs at least, and I had to carry it up 3 flights of stairs. If you're on the weaker or smaller side of the human size distribution, get a friend to help you. It comes in a large box and it is very heavy on the bottom side. Also, I didn't know this when I bought it, but it comes with a super nifty little remote that has an LCD display on it telling you all the current settings, and the unit beeps when you press a button on the remote to let you know it received the command. Absolutely happy with this machine, highly recommend it. And there's NO DRAINAGE OR WATER HOSE REQUIRED unless you turn it to the dehumidifier mode! Simply fantastic, my parents had an older portable AC that required you to dump a bucket of water from it every three hours. Couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase. Hats off to you, Frigidaire engineers.

This was the first year I decided I wasn't going to suffer in the heat. This was incredible! It is a bit loud, but it was effective and got the job done. I had to turn the TV up when I turned it on, but that didn't bother me too bad. I live in a three-story apartment with only sliding windows in the Pacific Northwest. The AC setup was really self-explanatory, the box was easy to open, it is not super heavy, and it worked really well. I have a 760 ft² apartment, I put this in the living room on one side of the apartment, and the bedrooms are on the opposite side. The entire apartment stayed pretty cool. The fan that blows the cold air into the apartment is really strong and you can adjust the direction, So we managed to get a good flow of cold air. It did not increase my electricity bill as much as I thought it was going to! I am pleasantly surprised with this thing. I only used it for one season though, I'm not sure how it will work next year after being stored all year.

I bought this last May 2023 and used it through the summer. It seemed to work fine, I cleaned and stored it for the winter like the manual says. I got it out April 2024 and hooked everything back up, the unit powers up and the fan runs but no longer gets cold. I called Frigidaire since it was under warranty and even purchased the extended warranty so it would be covered for another few years. Deling with the phone rep seemed to go well. I went online and uploaded pictures of the serial number tag and answered the same questions again. Once I submitted it I never received a confirmation, no updates, and there is no tracking of any kind available online. The only thing is one line that says it was approved. I've made at least 20 phone calls, several online chats, and emailed back and for countless times. After weeks of this I was finally able to get an order number for the replacement but there is no way to look it up. Ive been told they will have the installer call me, then they tell me it's coming by UPS. They have given me phone numbers that are disconnected. To this date I still have no idea where my replacement is, if it is ever coming, or what is actually going on with this company. This was one of the few times Amazon actually let me down. I called their customer service and received no help whatsoever from them. I will be sure to tell everyone I know to stay away from Frigidaire and AMZ going forward.

12,000 / 8,000 BTU AC Set up was very easy. We have very narrow 16" double hung windows in master bedroom so I had to cut the window attachment. There is a rubber plug under the upper drain cap. Strange. I removed it and connected a 5' garden hose from the upper drain into a bucket. The unit performed excellent on cool mode. Ran for 2 plus hours and the drained water didn't cover the bottom of a 3 gal bucket. The outside of the shipping box shows a refrigerator type receptacle (Tee shaped prong) is required. Not so. Maybe for the larger units. Standard 3 prong receptacle. This unit is supposed to draw 11 AMPS, but it tripped a 15 AMP breaker on first start with 2 cell phones charging the only other things on the circuit. I'm thinking everything was tight as never been run. After running the unit for a couple hours I turned everything on, on that circuit. Two large lamps, two clocks, phone. With the AC fan on high the lights briefly blinked when compressor kicked on. The AC is very quiet on cool with low fan setting. We had the central AC running and set at 76. Outside temps at 95. The master bedroom, large walk in and bathroom dropped from 76 to 65 within 30 mins. The interior doors were open. No doubt this will keep the master bedroom cool if central AC goes out or we need to rely on a generator. Nice feature is when in Cool mode, the fan always runs so it won't wake you if it completely shuts down when it hits the set point temp. You have constant quiet white noise to sleep with.

I love this air conditioner. I bought for my semi-truck so it takes a lot of abuse as truck travels over good and bad roads. Setting up is easy and done everytime I sit a long time at places. The remote works when aimed properly at the unit. The exhaust hose gets very warm hence I wrapped it with an insulation cover. I did a lot of research before deciding on this one and have no regrets. I needed something compact yet powerful to handle the heat when the sun beats down on the truck. It saves me a lot of $$ not having to idle the truck to stay cool. Sometimes it is powered via extension cords from an outlet, other times by generator. The only noise is the air blowing which is no louder than the small fans used, and only when I am next to it. I sleep on the top bunk and don't hear it at all. Many times I have to look down to see if it is still running.

I'm sorry for the low stars and this is just my personal experience that may help others. (Especially since this is an expensive purchase.) First I'll say I have this and another brand of portable a/c unit and they are both loud; I really wish, in general, engineers could figure out how to make these quieter. That said, I've had this particular Fridigaire model for a more than a year maybe two, and it really is very loud especially since I needed to put it in my bedroom while sleeping. Even with foam earplugs and noise canceling headphones it makes it very hard to sleep. And if I turn to sleep on my side and have to take the noise canceling headphones off (and still with foam earplugs) it really disrupts (if not prevents at times) my sleep. The cooling itself is pretty good although I have to set the desired temperature low in order to keep the unit consistently on – otherwise, it turns on and off (e.g., if the desired temp is met, then it gets hot again) and that noise of turning on and off is also extremely loud. I have also noticed a funny issue recently (well not that funny) where it doesn't seem very cool, but then if I adjust the hose a bit it seems to then fix itself and cooler air will then start again (an AI tool gave me this idea and it worked thaknfully). Also, there is some sort of generator sound when it cycles that also is a noise factor. It has vents that you can manually adjust but this unit does not have a 'swing' feature (I thought it did). It comes with a remote but with a poor design: I have to be very close to the unit for the remote to work and when I turn the unit back on, using the remote, all of my previous settings are changed (e.g., it was on cool and then the remote puts it onto auto or dry, and it now has a different desired temperature setting) – which will not work if you try to turn the unit on and off during the night when it's dark, especially. It would also help if the cord were longer to have more flexibility in small rooms with few outlets. Again this is just my personal experience, and maybe others will not be affected/bothered by these things. I hope all of us can be able to be in living spaces with central quiet air soon! :)

TLDR; 3 stars because I don't consider this portable and the installation is not convenient. On top of that, installing the window piece is going to be an ordeal for most people and I am shocked more reviews don't mention this. You are going to have to cut hard plastic with some kind of saw and tap screw holes. This is not something I am used to doing when I order an appliance. Once the window piece is in place I can't imagine anyone moving it...so this is not portable despite having wheels. Its a window unit that is free standing instead of hanging inside or outside of your window. If you were to detach it from the window you could temporarily cool another room at the expense of the room next to the one you were cooling...but this is an extremely limited use case IMO and not at all efficient. The exhaust heat this thing generates is significant. It's almost hair dryer hot. It does cool a bedroom or home office though, once installed, very well and very quickly. Its like a hotel room AC in that regard if you want to crank it down and freeze, you can. It feels like a great car AC to me, except its in your room and not your car. Lastly...the noise is insane. It does not bother me personally because I like loud white noise and I use headphones when working or gaming. But I am shocked how loud it is. It's almost as loud as a shop fan you might use to dry a carpet. You have to clean the filter about once a month if you run it 8-10 hours a day. Not ideal but at least you aren't having to buy them. I will say its pretty cool how they have somehow eliminated the need for draining off the water. Where does the condensation go? NFI. If you use it to dehumidify you have to attach a hose and drain it somewhere but I can't imagine anyone buying it for that.
