This has kept be cool for two summers. This is about the smallest (BTU wise) air conditioner you can get. It's not efficient at all, has a single speed compressor and it basically a glorified relay around a compressor. It works just fine for keeping a small California room cool during the summer. Pro tip: just use the dry mode and put a large bottle or bucket using the continuous drainage hose. Dry mode is same as cool but on low fan with the compressor always on. Do not use cool mode as the firmware is bad. Let me explain, in cool mode, as it reaches the temperature, it turns the compressor off, but keeps the fan on. But as it's a single fan on the condenser and evaporator, this means it also continues to push air outside. Now, as this is a single hose model, this means that it's exhausting the very air it just cooled. Had the fan and compressor gone on/off together, this would have been fine, but as is, the cool mode ends up heating the room again when it reaches temperature. So, I always keep it in dry mode. Another tip - the fan due to the rotation inside will always blow air out towards the left by a good curvature. So angle this further right than where you want the cool air If you have a bigger room - get yourself an inverter compressor based unit, those are much quieter and more powerful and is what I use now. FYI with PG&E on peak pricing, this was using around 800 watts, so you'd be looking at 30-40 cents an hour to run if left running. The 14000 BTU inverter unit I switched to isn't much more, while being over twice the output (and able to work as a heat pump for cheaper than in-wall furnace heating).

Update: I'm so sorry to update with fewer stars, but this really does not cool fast enough in hot living spaces, and not having a swing feature is a problem. It also takes a long time for it to cool the space (and as mentioned below, is very loud). While this is not working for me, maybe it will work for somone else. // ....I'm sorry for the low stars and this is just my personal experience that may help others. (Especially since this is an expensive purchase.) First I'll say I have this and another brand of portable a/c unit and they are both loud; I really wish, in general, engineers could figure out how to make these quieter. That said, I've had this particular Fridigaire model for a more than a year maybe two, and it really is very loud especially since I needed to put it in my bedroom while sleeping. Even with foam earplugs and noise canceling headphones it makes it very hard to sleep. And if I turn to sleep on my side and have to take the noise canceling headphones off (and still with foam earplugs) it really disrupts (if not prevents at times) my sleep. The cooling itself is pretty good although I have to set the desired temperature low in order to keep the unit consistently on – otherwise, it turns on and off (e.g., if the desired temp is met, then it gets hot again) and that noise of turning on and off is also extremely loud. I have also noticed a funny issue recently (well not that funny) where it doesn't seem very cool, but then if I adjust the hose a bit it seems to then fix itself and cooler air will then start again (an AI tool gave me this idea and it worked thaknfully). Also, there is some sort of generator sound when it cycles that also is a noise factor. It has vents that you can manually adjust but this unit does not have a 'swing' feature (I thought it did). It comes with a remote but with a poor design: I have to be very close to the unit for the remote to work and when I turn the unit back on, using the remote, all of my previous settings are changed (e.g., it was on cool and then the remote puts it onto auto or dry, and it now has a different desired temperature setting) – which will not work if you try to turn the unit on and off during the night when it's dark, especially. It would also help if the cord were longer to have more flexibility in small rooms with few outlets. Again this is just my personal experience, and maybe others will not be affected/bothered by these things. I hope all of us can be able to be in living spaces with central quiet air soon! :)

If you're in a 3rd floor dorm room with terrible AC and a window you can't put a window AC in, this is the unit for you. It is very quiet for an air conditioner, it's quieter than the whole-house air conditioner at my parent's house (though, that unit is right outside a single-pane window and 10 years old). At it's highest fan setting, it's about as loud as a desk fan. You can hardly notice when the compressor kicks on, it isn't much louder than the fan, just a lower tone. Very comfortable to sleep next to, very unintrusive in my daily life. It cools the air, it blasts the air, it won't fall out of your window and kill someone. I got mine for $179 on sale, and at that price, it was a fantastic deal. I am very impressed by the quality and performance of this unit. For $50 more, I may be a bit more hesitant recommending it if a window air conditioner would work in your room. Since this is a portable air conditioner, it is substantially less power efficient than a window air conditioner. It uses the same amount of electricity as an 8000 BTU window unit, with an effective cooling power of only 5500 BTUs. I'm perfectly happy with that since I pay flat rate rent which includes utilities, but you may not be so lucky. Installing the exhaust panel into my window was a bit of a challenge at first since I thought I would need a hacksaw to cut the sliding plastic panel to the right size, but I was able to make it work by scoring it in the right place repeatedly (and firmly) with a utility knife and snapping it over my leg. If you have the grip strength to force a utility knife into some industrial plastic, installation will require no special tools. Just a utility knife and a #2 Phillips head screwdriver. If you'd like to be a bit more careful and less brutish with it, a $5 hacksaw from Walmart will do the job as intended. Keep in mind, this unit is HEAVY! Felt like 50lbs at least, and I had to carry it up 3 flights of stairs. If you're on the weaker or smaller side of the human size distribution, get a friend to help you. It comes in a large box and it is very heavy on the bottom side. Also, I didn't know this when I bought it, but it comes with a super nifty little remote that has an LCD display on it telling you all the current settings, and the unit beeps when you press a button on the remote to let you know it received the command. Absolutely happy with this machine, highly recommend it. And there's NO DRAINAGE OR WATER HOSE REQUIRED unless you turn it to the dehumidifier mode! Simply fantastic, my parents had an older portable AC that required you to dump a bucket of water from it every three hours. Couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase. Hats off to you, Frigidaire engineers.

I agree with many of the reviews here - cools well, remote is glitchy, exhaust hose is pretty flimsy and window panels are deficient for some sizes of windows. I purchased it over others for one reason … I needed a unit that didn’t turning off and on as temps are reached (like a different brand unit in my son’s room and most other brands I’ve shopped). I’m a pretty light sleeper and while this unit is not as quiet as I would like (50 db according to the specs), having a fan and compressor starting up and shutting down all night is way worse than a steady blowing fan, even a rather noisy one. I can’t even hear when the compressor kicks on, the fan noise is so consistent. Anyway, when I was looking at different brands and models before I bought this unit, I was hoping someone would mention this particular feature in a review since it doesn’t seem to be something that manufacturers highlight, so here is my service to light sleepers everywhere.

This A/C unit is in my room to assist with central air. My family can’t handle the temp below 73 in the house and I can’t sleep when it is that warm. So, I got this little unit to assist. Sometimes I move it into my living room. I have even taken it with me to have in a tent - that didn’t do so well as the person’s electric wasn’t stable and it kept tripping the breaker. It doesn’t cool big areas well, but it wasn’t designed to. But, for one room it does well. I just have a bucket behind it. On humid days the bucket can fill up fast. When the central air wasn’t working I was emptying the bucket about 4 times a day due to all the humidity in the house. It was a life saver. The remote honestly sucks. I can’t get it to work well. I figure it is more likely some sort of user error - though I don’t know how that’s possible. It is not extremely quiet. It is a louder fan. I find that window units are just as loud, so no real complaints there. It doesn’t move great on carpets, but it does move with some small effort. If my floors were all tile it would be awesome. You do have to have a window to exhaust it. That exhaust will heat up the area fast if you don’t have this outside source. It does not fit in my window well at all. I am in a rental, so I can’t make adjustments well that would make it easier. So, I just use a box to hold it down.

I am using this in a VERY small office space where I need the temperature and humidity to be controlled. It works well enough but it is loud. Not as advertised dB for sure. Another issue I have is if I set it to auto and the temp reaches the target temp, the compressor will turn off and it will continue to blow air, however, this air is very humid. So my solution, for now, is just to set it to cold function and turn the unit off when it drops below my target temp and back on when I need it. Inconvenient but for the price and the small footprint I will deal with it. Updated review: This ran fine for about 3 months during the first year when I purchased it, but then the compressor stopped working properly. It would kick on for 5 minutes and turn off for 20 minutes. It was still within warranty and I had a replacement order sent to me, the process took about two weeks. When the next year rolled around and it was summer and time to turn this on again, it worked for about 3 weeks, and then, same issue, compressor turning off for 20 minutes, coming back on for 5 minutes. By this time I was already out of the warranty time frame so this went to the recycler.

This was the first year I decided I wasn't going to suffer in the heat. This was incredible! It is a bit loud, but it was effective and got the job done. I had to turn the TV up when I turned it on, but that didn't bother me too bad. I live in a three-story apartment with only sliding windows in the Pacific Northwest. The AC setup was really self-explanatory, the box was easy to open, it is not super heavy, and it worked really well. I have a 760 ft² apartment, I put this in the living room on one side of the apartment, and the bedrooms are on the opposite side. The entire apartment stayed pretty cool. The fan that blows the cold air into the apartment is really strong and you can adjust the direction, So we managed to get a good flow of cold air. It did not increase my electricity bill as much as I thought it was going to! I am pleasantly surprised with this thing. I only used it for one season though, I'm not sure how it will work next year after being stored all year.

I like this unit. It cools the room quickly. It has three air intakes, but only two of the three have removable and cleanable filters. The lower intake on the back has no filter, and the panel cannot be removed. The coils got covered with dust and there was no way to get the panel off to vacuum the coils. I had to get a brush and get some bristles through the slots to loosen the dirt before most of it could be vacuumed. It looks like it would have been easy for the manufacturer to make that panel removable. As it is, you would have to disassemble the unit to get to the coils and clean them properly, and they could have made the panel with a filter screen on it and the panel removable.
