We bought this for a 3-week cross-country camping trip in desert, plains, and mountainous regions. We packed it absolutely full of tents/chairs/luggage/equipment. It's soft rather than rigidly shaped, so it flexed with the lumps and bumps of the stuff. The zipper is super strong. The straps are sturdy and easily adjustable. I saw some reviews that mentioned it wasn't waterproof... yes, it is. I suspect those people did not smooth down the rain flaps: they cover the zipper and seal closed with velcro. Our cargo bag experienced sleet, hailstorm, and extended (many days) continuous heavy rains, and never did one drop of moisture get inside. I can't speak to using the included rubbery mat as intended (to go under the cargo bag if using it directly on the car roof), because we secured the cargo bag directly to our Jeep Wrangler's roof rack, but I can say it is made of pretty sturdy stuff—we used it to stop rough things secured on our trailer-hitch cargo rack from rubbing/wearing on our spare tire cover, and it came through in great shape. I drove with it essentially packed full from Houston to upstate New York. ~25 hours on the road over three days, and the bag never budged. We did stop to check the straps every couple hours at first and were limiting our speed as well. But after a couple stops and the straps not having loosened any noticeable amount, we stopped checking so often and drove at normal speeds (~85 mph). We drove through pretty heavy rain for at least 4 hours of the drive and not a drop got inside the bag. It was strapped to my Subaru crosstrek which only has side bars on the roof, so we didn’t even use the front straps - just connected them on diagonals over the top. It was quiet, and did affect gas mileage as expected, but did not affect car handling as much as I thought it would at all. We drove 5 days across country with the carrier packed with suitcases and had almost no issues. Getting it on the car was easy enough, same with securing it. We hit a rainstorm that lasted about an hour, it was fairly heavy rain and everything in the carrier was soaked. I've only taken the roof bag on a short trip but it seems to hold securely and not move around or make much noise at 60 mph. I like the ease with which it can be set up on the roof (appx. 30 mins. first time, mostly adjusting the lenght of the straps which are now the right length for future set ups). My only suggestion is to address what to do with the additional length of nylon strapping once it's properly adjusted. A suggestion is to roll 1"-2" increments and then wrap a large rubber band around the roll so that it doesn't flap around in the wind. Nice unit overall. Only problem was that one of the clips broke but it fit my 2013 Toyota camry. Had to use a ratchet strap.
