FINALLY got around to using this the last few weeks. It's great, MUCH easier to cut out fabric than with scissors. You have to use some pressure, but it cuts cleanly. Somewhere along the way I lost the ruler that came with this set; I ended up buying another one, and I would STRONGLY suggest that anyone else in the same boat do so as well. The rotary cutter moves so easily and quickly once you get going that it's very easy to swerve and not cut on the line. The ruler helps immensely with this. Also: I recently purchased two other kinds of blades for this cutter: "10 Pack 45 MM Pinking Rotary Wave Blades NEW Refills with Snap Closure Decorative Edge SKS-7" sold by HJAR and "45mm Rotary Cutter Blades (Pack of 5)" sold by Tamper and Twine. Both work in this rotary cutter, and actually both work very well so far. Changing the blades is quick and easy and I haven't been nicked once. I bought the pinking blades so that my woven quilting cottons would stop fraying so quickly, and the other blades as backups to this. The first blade that came with this set is still sharp so far despite having cut out: 1.5 yards of woven cotton in a number of pieces for bags, 2 yards knitted polyester/cotton for a dress, and 4 yards woven polyester for two shirts. While I can see the slices in the matt (especially from the pinking blades), they are all shallow enough that fabric still slides smoothly across the top, and there's no difficulty in cutting out more fabric. The ruler and grid aspects to the matt are tremendously helpful. ... show more

I bought this for a project I am working on but when it arrived I was working on another project that I was able to use it for. Mat is fantastic ..no complaints........the ruler need the little grip tabs on the bottom of it because I noticed that when I put it down on a large piece of thin material, when trying to smooth the material...it moves other than that...it's great......the rotary cutter...cuts fantastically, the biggest issue I see with this particular cutter is safety, the whole time I used it, I was afraid I was going to end up cutting myself, that blade is super sharp, which is exactly what I but the stick rotary cutter just feels unsafe, maybe it's my own inexperience with it but I had a different one before and I don't remember feeling this way when using it. (It was also Fiskars) I bought all of these as replacement items that I lost in a fire. EDIT: I used this whole set for hours yesterday and the more I used it the more I became comfortable with using the rotary cutter, it's just common sense things, don't cut towards yourself, fingers etc. The blade is extremely sharp and I didn't cut myself once. ... show more

This is a wonderful starter set. The rotary cutter is simple to use and has a retractable cover for the blade. It is simple to change the blade, as well. It is easily used by both lefties and righties. The only complaint is that the handle is a bit thin. It would be easier on my hands if a little thicker, but I could definitely use this one forever if I had no other options. The blade size is perfect for most jobs. The ruler is clearly marked, and has extra markings for seam allowance (1/2 extra at two edges, marked in 1/4" increments). This is the best feature of the entire set, in my opinion. Very helpful. It also has 30, 45, & 60 degree angles clearly marked on two corners (one with seam allowance and one without). The mat is what I fight with the most. It is clearly marked and very nice-looking, but dulls the blades pretty quickly. I am told this is normal with the grey and white mats. This one is no exception. My blade went from very sharp to completely dull in a matter of days. I was working on a twin-size H-block puzzle quilt and couldn't get all the pieces cut from one blade. I have the titanium ones being shipped now. Maybe they will fare better. All in all, this is a great set. When I get ready, though, I will be purchasing a different mat and gifting this one on. Hope this review helps. Would buy the set again. It was a great deal, and the blades dull faster, but I'm hoping the better blades solve that problem. Happy cutting! ... show more
