Description

Oprah’s Book Club Pick for Summer 2024The follow-up to the beloved 1 New York Times bestselling modern classic The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, Familiaris is the stirring origin story of the Sawtelle family and the remarkable dogs that carry the Sawtelle name.It is spring 1919, and John Sawtelle's imagination has gotten him into trouble ... again. Now John and his newlywed wife, Mary, along with their two best friends and their three dogs, are setting off for Wisconsin's north woods, where they hope to make a fresh start--and, with a little luck, discover what it takes to live a life of meaning, purpose, and adventure. But the place they are headed for is far stranger and more perilous than they realize, and it will take all their ingenuity, along with a few new friends--human, animal, and otherworldly--to realize their dreams.By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, mysterious and enchanting, Familiaris takes readers on an unforgettable journey from the halls of a small-town automobile factory, through an epic midwestern firestorm and an ambitious WWII dog training program, and far back into mankind's ancient past, examining the dynamics of love and friendship, the vexing nature of families, the universal desire to create something lasting and beautiful, and of course, the species- long partnership between Homo sapiens and Canis familiaris. • A wonderful long read
A very nice set of stories, tied together nicely through the main characters John and Mary Sawtelle and their dogs. Wroblewski’s writing is magic at times; a gifted storyteller with remarkable command of the words on the pages. So filled with emotions throughout it’s easy to live inside the characters. Bravo. ... show more

  • Outstanding!
Familiaris by David Wroblewski is such a heartfelt, wonderful read. I loved every minute of it! What an enjoyable read: the setting, the characters, their friendship, their love for each other, together through thick and thin, highs and lows, and of course, Mary and John. Also, those Sawtelle dogs, so special! John Sawtelle asked the question: “What if you could do one impossible thing?”, and that question changed the trajectory of so many lives for the better. It is a very long book, 980 pages. It could have been edited, but then again I don’t know what I would want cut out. I listened to and read the Kindle book simultaneously through immersion reading on the Kindle app. I highly recommend this type of reading experience. Richard Poe was an incredible narrator; he brought the story and all of the characters to life. What a talented reader! It’s outstanding fiction! Not to be missed! ... show more

  • A very good saga!
I loved the story from the beginning to the end, but it was a very long and heavy book.

  • A meandering journey of love and dogs.
I wasn’t sure what to expect of this long book when I started to read but it unfolded beautifully into a tale of loving friendships and dog antics. Just go with the flow and allow your self to be immersed in the story. The characters are well developed with their flaws and foibles. The journey is worth it. ... show more

  • Believe Oprah
This book, a prequel to the "Story of Edgar Sawtelle" is a warm hearted tale of the life of John and Mary Sawtelle, the dogs they raised and trained and the friends they made along the way. At over 900 pages, it doesn't fit in you pants pocket but you won't mind. The final chapters struck me as a creative to bring the story of the grandparents of Edgar Sawtelle to their end and was done is a way that tells the end without being maudlin. It would be great to know there will be more novels by this writer, but with 15 years between his first and second, it won't matter to me since I don't expect to be around 15 years from now. ... show more

  • My Copy's Printing is Defective
From page 229-255 (so far, as I have not finished the book) the word "opposite" is imbedded in other words. Ex: the word WAS appears as WOPPOSITES. As you can see in the photo, it makes reading difficult when this is occurring anywhere from 3-18 or so times per page! Did anyone else have this problem?? Amazon is sending me a new copy. ... show more

  • They’re more than dogs
This is a prequel to The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. It’s about Edgar’s Grandma Mary and Grandpa John Sawtelle. It starts with John and his friends Elbow and Frank. John and Mary buy a farm near Mellon, Wisconsin and take Elbow and Frank with them. Also in the car are their dogs Vi and Needles. This is a story of family, of dogs, of ideas. The descriptions are poetic, and funny, and sad. You will laugh and cry while reading this book. The audio version is over 37 hours of listening. This would be perfect for book club. It would also be perfect for a rainy day, when all you have to do is read a book and sip a cup of tea. This book will stay with you for years. Read it now and thank me later. ... show more

  • Epic
It's a complete saga. Very rewarding. Full of the country and people where it took place. A little more severe editing and I would have given it a five.
