David Wroblewski, the Author of “Familiaris” has written a captivating, enthralling, and heartfelt novel. I can understand why this was an Oprah’s 2024 Book Club pick. I loved everything about this book. Of course, I appreciate how the authors shows appreciation and empathy for dogs. The Genres for this novel are: Historical Fiction, Literary Sagas, Family Saga, Literary Fiction, Animals, with a touch of Fantasy and Mysticism. The author is a master writer and story teller, and vividly writes about the history, the scenery, and the colorful and dramatic characters and dogs. I was impressed with both the evolution of the characters and their dogs. The author discusses the importance of family, friendship, living life to the fullest, respect, honesty, love and hope. The author takes on a literary journey where we meet John Sawtelle, his wife Mary, some fascinating friends , and three personable dogs as they begin their adventures in 1919. They purchase land and hope to find their dreams. We glimpse different historical events as time goes on, and notice the significance and importance of the characters and their dogs in their lives. This is a wonderful love story between humans and dogs. There are some difficulties, some heartbreaking stories, some humor and tears. Great book. I’m having trouble putting it down. I read his first book “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle” years ago. I watched for a long time for a second book and gave up. I found this by accident when ordering another copy of Edgar Sawtelle. I highly recommend both. I am about half way through Familiaris and am very involved. His books are about dogs, people, places with a little supernatural thrown in. I have trouble finding what I consider a good book. I read every day. Both are good reads. ... show more

    • Fan of the story & author but the printing typos made it a miserable read. Had to return.

The story is dense, complicated, beautiful, and extraordinary at times. It takes patience to read. If you loved The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, you will enjoy this book once you get about 150 pages in. It's slow to warm up and the characters are complicated. However, the word "opposite" is injected into so many words starting around page 240 that it became miserable to read and I returned the book as defective. ... show more

Hello, I wanted to share my thoughts on a book that truly left a lasting impression on me. At first glance, 980 pages might seem daunting, but I was surprised at how quickly I became absorbed in its world. Every page was captivating, and I found myself staying up late into the night, unable to put it down—even as the hours slipped by. The story was not only moving but also incredibly rewarding, making the length feel more like a gift than a challenge. I really can't praise this book enough. If you decide to give it a try, I’m confident you’ll be thanking me for the recommendation. In fact, a good friend was the one who originally suggested it to me, and I’ve thanked them countless times for introducing me to such an amazing read. This is one of the best books that I have ever read! I loved Edgar Sawtelle, but this was even better and well worth the wait. The story is engrossing and very hard to put down. I found this book to be a very tedious time-consuming read, even though it is highly touted. I realize that my opinion is in the minority. Being a great fan of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, my expectations for Familiaris were high. I was sorely disappointed and really had to force myself to finish the book, but am glad that I did. I found many of the stories within the book disjointed and excessively lengthy. In addition to a great deal of minutia in the prose, the style of writing seemed inconsistent to me. Perhaps that was purposeful, though. The most redeeming portion of the book was in Part VI-Familiaris which is direct, humorous, loving, and sad. It is in this section that the true nature of the characters shine in their love and respect for each other. It is this section that made the book worth finishing. ... show more

I very much enjoyed reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. This book, FAMILIARIS, some 10 years later, is actually a prequel. I’m anxious to get into it. Good writing and intriguing storyline of the SAWTELLE book. I’m expecting the same from this one. Delivery was prompt and packaging was secure.

I felt the essence of this book didn’t need quite so many words. I found myself skimming which is rare for me. I enjoyed the book and loved the diversity of characters, including their interplay. I want a Sawtelle Dog!
