Description

After his arrival at the Fort Sill Indian Reservation in Oklahoma, Geronimo uses a magical laptop to tell the history of the Chiricahua Apaches from his point of view. Geronimo was a master war strategist before he surrendered. After his incarceration, the remarkable Indian adapts and becomes a keen observer of how the white man thinks. Especially the white man who is president. How can he get President Theodore Roosevelt to let him take his people back to their home in Arizona? The man is a powerful opponent who has no love for Indians. Especially Geronimo. Unable to change the president’s mind without help, he uses the laptop to send messages to Lt. Gatewood, the officer he grew to trust when he was a prisoner at Fort Apache. Geronimo is counting on the lieutenant to advise him on his problems with Teddy Roosevelt. Because of pressure from businessmen who see a profit to be made by using the famous Apache to draw crowds, the government allows Geronimo to leave the reservation to make public appearances in Wild West shows, expos, and fairs all over the country. Geronimo sees his new popularity as a tool to help him change the president’s mind about letting him take his people home. As his popularity grows, trains begin to carry eager visitors to the reservation who seek out the famous Indian to hear his side of the Apache story…the story that books and newspapers don’t tell. Geronimo’s Laptop is an extension of the play Geronimo, Life on the Reservation, that I wrote for Rudy Ramos (High Chaparral, Yellowstone, and more.) and was directed by Steve Railsback. In 2021, the play was picked by The Los Angeles Times as one of their 19 Cultural Picks. Suitable for all. Read more

  • HOOKED FROM PAGE ONE!
GERONIMO'S LAPTOP is a story of survival, strength, loss, heartbreak, and wonder. Humor is woven throughout the story, from its imaginative premise of a mystical laptop to the characters themselves. Janelle Meraz Hooper respects her subject and the circumstances and times that shaped his life. GERONIMO'S LAPTOP is a powerful and engaging history lesson. "In this way, Geronimo tells the story of his people: the pain mixed with humor. The humor mixed with pain. The sadness mixed with both." (from page 32) ... show more

  • Such a creative novel and perfect for all generations
Janelle Meraz has captured the old Medicine Man Geronimo during his later years at Ft. Sill, adjacent to Lawton, OK, where she grew up and where every school kid knew who Geronimo was. Her masterful work of allowing 21st century electronics to help the old Indian make a case for real freedom for his people to return to their homeland hopefully will allow today's young readers to better know the Chiricahua warrior. ... show more

  • A poignant telling of a real man, a beautiful piece of American history that everyone should know...
This book.... "Geronimo's Laptop" is categorized as a historical fantasy. And, yes, it is that. I mean, Geronimo's LAPTOP would promise to be, of course, a fantasy. The story is told in a series of visits with Geronimo from settlers, curiosity seekers, journalists, etc., while he is residing at Fort Sill, the Oklahoma Territory. Each chapter is a separate days' visit from folks who've come far and wide to see the famous Apache religious and military leader. And, during each visit, Geronimo's life and some history are revealed to each visiting group. As far as the fantasy element, each chapter also begins with excerpts from "emails" Geronimo sends to various persons, mostly to his good and respected friend, First Lieutenant Charles Bare Gatewood. Not until the end are we told exactly where this mysterious laptop comes from and how...well, you get it. It's a curious and unique spark of make-believe that turns this beautifully told tale of real-life events, real people and history into a "fantasy" with delicate humor that makes the Native American plight touch the heart. BUT, the light humor adds a soft, human, very relatable touch to this famous man's years as a "guest" at Fort Sill. I found myself googling to verify events, names, real photos of the cast of characters in this novel. So this literary adventure turned out to actually be a history lesson that I wish folks would read if they want to know about Geronimo...his family, his friends and such famous names in this era of history as Cochise, Quanah Parker, among others. The mysterious angel in white who visits Geronimo and his wife, Zi-yeh, and leaves behind a white feather after every encounter! I will admit that, to learn the identity of this lovely phantom in white was a compelling force that kept me enchanted. And, of course, to know where the hell Geronimo came by a laptop! A poignant telling of a real man: heart-breaking, humorous, childlike, adventurous, fascinating and, ultimately, quite a beautiful lesson of a piece of American history that everyone should know. Recommended. ... show more

  • In an Alternate Universe
This was a fascinating story. Part history lesson, part science fiction, part speculative fiction, and entirely spot on. History is written by the victors, and the conquered rarely get a chance to tell their side. In Geronimo’s Laptop, however, author Janelle Meraz Hooper has finally done just that. It’s Geronimo as you’ve never encountered him before – human, pragmatic, philosophical, and determined to set the record straight. There’s humor, but it’s muted with the burden of truth it carries. Geronimo’s personal liberty might have been reduced to the confines of Fort Sill Indian Reservation in Oklahoma, but his reputation could not be contained. As the American public sought out this living relic of Native America so they could say they had actually seen the infamous Geronimo and actually spoken with him, Geronimo milked their curiosity for all it was worth. And the laptop. Oh, yes. This technological marvel with supernatural programming is the icing on the cake. Essentially, Geronimo is past, present, and future. It’s an intriguing concept. The bottom line, however, is that the reader finally gets to read the other side of the story, and it’s tough going. It’s an eye opener for those of us who accepted what we’d been taught as gospel. Is there justice, after all? Perhaps. The lesson here is to question. Always question what you’ve been told. And in the questioning, the truth may finally be told. Geronimo’s Laptop is history the way it should be taught. It’s got the hook, for sure. It’s also got the facts. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Gotta love Geronimo’s WeSquawk network
This story made me laugh and cry. Worth reading many times and recommending to others. Geronimo’s Laptop is among the most unique historical humor fantasies on earth! Set in Fort Sill, where the Apaches became POWs, Geronimo receives visitors and answers their questions. He’s well aware of his celebrity and does everything to utilize it to set the record straight, petition for his people’s freedom, and make money to help his tribe. Janelle Meraz Hooper, author of many novels, historical and modern and humorous (and some serious), adds the fantasy element of Geronimo using a laptop, that he, well, “borrowed” from one of the officers who is away from the base. With his setup of WeSquawk network, he can reach out to other “Indians,” dead or alive. Hooper deftly keeps suspense in the air through the mysterious appearances of white feathers, delivered from an unknown man, often to Geronimo’s beloved wife, and trying to locate the missing lieutenant who most understood and helped Geronimo. ... show more
