Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From New York Times bestselling author Ayana Gray comes a “captivating villain origin story” (People Book of the Week), reimagining one of the most iconic monsters in Greek mythology as a provocative and powerful young heroine. The first edition hardcover features stunning sprayed edges, a premium dust jacket with foil, and a gorgeous custom-stamped case—while supplies last! “Ayana Gray brings her fresh, dynamic storytelling to one of the most monstered, maligned, and misunderstood women of Greek myth, imagining all the girls that Medusa was and could have been.”—Jennifer Saint, bestselling author of Ariadne AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR Meddy has spent her whole life as a footnote in someone else’s story. Out of place next to her beautiful, immortal sisters and her parents—both gods, albeit minor ones—she dreams of leaving her family’s island for a life of adventure. So when she catches the eye of the goddess Athena, who invites her to train as an esteemed priestess in her temple, Meddy leaps at the chance to see the world beyond her home. In the colorful market streets of Athens and the clandestine chambers of the temple, Meddy flourishes in her role as Athena’s favored acolyte, getting her first tastes of purpose and power. But when she is noticed by another Olympian, Poseidon, the course of Meddy’s promising future is suddenly and irrevocably altered. When her locs are transformed into snakes as punishment for a crime she did not commit, Medusa must embrace a new identity—not as a victim, but as a vigilante—and with it, the chance to write her own story as mortal, martyr, and myth. Exploding with rage, heartbreak, and love, I, Medusa portrays a young woman caught in the crosscurrents between her heart’s deepest desires and the cruel, careless games the Olympian gods play. • Great origin story.
Format: Hardcover
4.5 ⭐️ Who’s the real villain? Masterful origin story of a myth most of us are familiar. The background and family life of Medusa brought her to life, in ways I haven’t read before. Meddy, the youngest and only mortal daughter of primordial sea gods wishes for nothing more than to one day leave the shores of her island home and explore the world. When she catches the attention of the goddess Athena, her wishes seem to be coming true. Asked to compete for a place as one of the goddess’ priestess, Meddy leaves all she knows behind for Athens. As she falls into life at the temple, we are given glimpses of Meddy’s depth - while clearly naive to the world, she is fierce and holds a deep inner rage to avenge the wrongs she sees committed by those who simply can. I loved seeing Medusa begin to recognize her strength and power in these chapters. It was easy to see how she impressed a goddess, and god. The attention of Olympians, while intoxicating, proves to be dangerous. Meddy finds herself balancing between the goddess Athena, to whom she’s sworn servitude and the charismatic Poseidon of the sea. I won’t spoil it for those who don’t know how this story ends. Again, while staying true to the original telling, Ayana weaves a heartbreaking rendention of how a monster was made. I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling, and the inclusiveness and diversity it brings. The emotions were heavy, in happiness and sorrow. I left questioning if Medusa was ever the real villain of her story after all. Recommend this book to anyone, but particularly fans of mythology. Thankful for the opportunity from NetGalley to read an advance copy of this book. ... show more

  • Title: Powerful, Haunting, and Absolutely Unforgettable
Format: Hardcover
I, Medusa hooked me from the first page. I loved how Medusa finally gets to tell her own story—raw, emotional, and surprisingly empowering. If you like mythology with strong, complex heroines, this is an easy 5-star read.

  • One of the BEST Greek Mythological Retellings in 2025!
Format: Hardcover
This being my first book by Ayana Gray was so, so, soooo much more than I ever expected! I had no previous author information; yet, I am emphatically in awe of what I read! From beginning to end, there was not one word or sentence wasted on dull or flat writing. Immediately, I was transported to this vivid, reimagined world of gods and goddesses and the cruel games and trickery they play with humans. I was reeled in when I realized this story would follow Medusa as ‘a human’. From a feminist perspective, it chronologically follows ‘Meddy’ from her early years being raised on a very remote island with her family, then to her training as an Acolyte for the Goddess Athena to become a priestess, and everything prior to her monstrous transformation. ‘I Medusa’ explores themes of love, (especially for her two other Gorgon sisters- Stheno and Euryale), friendship, newfound family, explosive rage, retribution, victimization and empowerment. It does a spectacular job of humanizing an iconic mythological villain. Meddy’s trials and tribulations are remarkable and relatable on so many levels. I was left with so much to process. My gorgeous hardcopy is my forever book, and I’ll recommend it for years on end. ***I obtained an advance reader copy from NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.*** ... show more

  • Good read!
Format: Hardcover
Really good read. Read it within four sittings and couldn’t put it down. Only complaint is the ending felt pretty rushed.

  • Must read
Format: Kindle
I feel like this author deserves an award the way that they made Medusa was beautiful. If you do not read any other Medusa story or you want to learn the beauty of Medusa read this story. I have read so many different books about Medusa and I feel like they've always made her the ugly monster that people believe she was. But the older I get the more I appreciate Medusa because she was beautiful but she was used and that is something that never sat right with me. The way that the author shows that and the gods and Medusa and her growing up in her life and her innocence is just phenomenal. The characters are beautiful the storyline is fantastic and the way that they did Medusa is how I wanted Medusa to be. They did her justice and the story itself is one of those stories that upset you that make you want to scream and make you want to cry and make you really upset because of the way they did Medusa they did her wrong and the story shows that. So 100% I would recommend this story it is definitely a beautifully written story ... show more
