  • Apocalyptic Classic
Kubin walks us through a dream realm of clashing unrealities and points towards an Eastern sense of detachment as a means of escaping the disaster of the dream realm. A prophetic work that outlined the catastrophe that eventually engulfed mitteleuropa during the First World War. The haunting visions characteristic of Kubin's drawings find a home in his captivating prose. ... show more

This is the novel of Unutopia. It was well developed until the last chapter which seemed to be a re-written Book of Revelations. It was worth reading, but I started skimming toward the end.

  • maybe the most mysterious book ever written
A man is visited by a person who is referring to an old schoolmate of the man, who in turn wants the man to come and live with him in his town in the middle of nowhere but with a good salary. As it turns out this town is built up by old houses that have been transported from Europe and other places, seemingly handpicked to give the town its special "atmosphere". It is this "atmosphere" which really constitutes the essence of the book and it is hard to describe in few words. Reading the book, I was spellbound from the beginning to the end as if I was reading something deeply essential and yet elusive and hard to pin down. The book isn't "artsy-fartsy" - don't get me wrong - there is something genuine here and a description of a panic-feeling, for instance, is absolutely correct (which is seldom the case in other books). This is the only novel Alfred Kubin wrote and he was hesitant in publishing it. We can be grateful that he did for, as it stands, it is probably the most mysterious book ever written, reminiscent of both Meyrink and Hoffman yet still genuinely unique. ... show more

  • Nightmar-ish proto-surrealism
The Other Side is a cult book among fans of weird fiction. It is the only novel Kubin ever wrote and, allegedly, this was done almost as a therapy, after suffering from a serious nervous break-down. Kubin is in fact better knows as an illustrator and a prominent exponent of Symbolism and Expressionism. His drawings and watercolors, some of which illustrated the works of Poe, Hoffman and Dostoevsky, are dark, spectral and occasionally morbid, the same qualities that one could easily associate with The Other Side. The novel was written over just eight weeks of manic work and it was later enriched with about 50 pen and ink drawings. The plot is rather straitghforward, up to a certain point: a nameless narrator (who happens to be an artist, just like Kubin) is invited to join Pearl, a mysterious city which has been founded deep in Asia by a long-forgotten schoolmate. Pearl is a nostalgic country, made with ruins and relics specially imported from the outside world and inhabited by a cast of eccentrics and iconoclasts. Patera, the former schoolmate, is a god-like figure that inhabits a huge Palace yet never makes an appearance. The narrator's attempts to actually meet his former buddy and the impossibility of ever attaining that (does Patera even exist? Is he just a myth, a symbol or a mystification orchestrated by the real rulers?) are very muchy reminiscent of Kafka's The Castle (which is in fact entirely non-coincidental since Kafka met Kubin and was greatly influenced by him). After a while things get even stranger, the city plunges into a nightmare and reality becomes blurred. An American millionaire joins the city and starts to actively antagonize Patera and...well, I'll leave the actual plot to you, let it suffice to say that at this stage the narrative acquires a marked surreal quality and the resulting nightmar-ish atmosphere encompasses a good dose of very graphic violence (to think this was written in 1908!). At one point, the narrator declares that art is like a `safety valve'. It's easy to see how Kubin might have tried to cure himself, by fixing on paper his anxieties and hallucinations. Apparently he succeeded in healing himself (he started his most mature artistic period shortly after the completion of the novel) and, in the process, he also gave the world an eerie masterpiece of proto-surrealism. ... show more

  • Everyone will love this book (when they discover it exists)
Format: Hardcover
Fans and followers of Alfred Kubin, rejoice: The Other Side is a highly enjoyable evening read. I've shared my own copy throughout the years with several grateful friends, including a seventy-year old lady and a college student in his twenties... and this was everyone's "old favorite". Hand-drawn illustrations (by the author) lend the novelette real charm and intimacy. Kubin's story intrigues, is paced evenly, and -unlike many late nineteenth century literary efforts- is lightly handled. Oh yes, and its odd, subtly weird and amusingly fantastical... without being too, too cerebral. To my knowledge this is the only illustrated edition of the Die Andere Seite available in English translation. So read it first, then share the wealth. ... show more
