SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2024 BOOKER PRIZE WINNER OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD FOR DEBUT FICTION WINNER OF THE 2025 WOMEN’S PRIZE FOR FICTION Shortlisted for the 2025 Dylan Thomas Prize and Aspen Words Literary Prize • A Best Book of 2024: The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Time, The Economist, The Globe and Mail (Toronto), Kirkus Reviews, The Independent, BookPage, The Sunday Times (London) “Remarkable…Compelling…Fine and taut…Indelible.” —The New York Times • “Moving, unnerving, and deeply sexy.” —Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl with the Pearl Earring • “A brilliant debut, as multi-faceted as a gem.” —Kirkus Reviews A “razor-sharp, perfectly plotted” (The Sunday Times, London) tale of desire, suspicion, and obsession between two women staying in the same house in the Dutch countryside during the summer of 1961—a powerful exploration of the legacy of WWII and the darker parts of our collective past. A house is a precious thing... It is 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the war is truly over. Living alone in her late mother’s country home, Isabel knows her life is as it should be—led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis brings his graceless new girlfriend Eva, leaving her at Isabel’s doorstep as a guest, to stay for the season. Eva is Isabel’s antithesis: she sleeps late, walks loudly through the house, and touches things she shouldn’t. In response, Isabel develops a fury-fueled obsession, and when things start disappearing around the house—a spoon, a knife, a bowl—Isabel’s suspicions begin to spiral. In the sweltering peak of summer, Isabel’s paranoia gives way to infatuation, leading to a discovery that unravels all Isabel has ever known. The war might not be well and truly over after all, and neither Eva—nor the house in which they live—are what they seem. Mysterious, sophisticated, sensual, and infused with intrigue, atmosphere, and sex, The Safekeep is “a brave and thrilling debut about facing up to the truth of history, and to one’s own desires” (The Guardian). • a compelling and mesmerizing tale of desire and jealously
Format: Kindle
It is 1961 in the Dutch province of Overijssel and the area is mostly reconstructed post WWII. Over the years sister/protagonist, Isabel, has become more of a loner, more compulsive, more suspicious and more mistrusting of others and more protective of that which is hers. Her younger bother, Hendricks lives with his partner, Sebastian. Her older brother, Louis, rarely comes to visit and is always distracted with one woman or another. Isabelle is living in her late mother’s country estate, living her days as structured and disciplined as she knows how to be. One evening when younger brother Hendricks and older brother Louis meet with Isabelle for one of their rare family dinners the conversations turns, as it inevitably does, to the house. Although Isabelle lives there and sees that it is properly cared for, it is Louis who technically owns the house as it was signed over to him (as the oldest child), by an uncle who initially purchased it for their late mother and her children. During this meal Louis announces that he has taken a job out of the country and informs Isabelle and his current love, Eva, will be coming to live at the house while he is away on business. Eva is the opposite of Isabelle: undisciplined, messy, and lazy, a busybody. Isabelle becomes obsessed with Eva, believing that she is stealing things from the house. Isabel’s feelings of paranoia grow out of control and, in the process, lead to an extreme convergence of feelings and, ultimately, infatuation, where nothing is as it seems. A tale of intrigue, sensuality and sex. An extraordinary story both compelling and mesmerizing. A provocative tale of jealousy and desire. Beautifully written sexy, with twisted desire. Taunting and unnerving. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ... show more

  • A Beautiful Story that was the Opposite of what I Expected
Format: Kindle
This book was beautiful. Every time I picked it up, I struggled to put it down. Was it perfect? No. But I loved it all the same. It was not at all what I expected; I thought it would be a psychological thriller and ended up with a historical romance. Historical fiction isn't usually my cup of tea, but I don't regret giving it a try in this instance. It started to drag at the end and I had to drag myself through the last few chapters unfortunately. This doesn't mean I didn't like the book; it was just a bit disappointing to have this beautiful, engaging story hit a wall when it should have picked up. I plan on giving this book a second read in the next year or so. I'd rate it a 4.5, but will unfortunately have to round down because the end was a small let-down. This does not mean it's not one of my favorite books I've read recently. ... show more

  • Know before you read
Format: Kindle
This might be a spoiler for many of you, but this book is about gay relationships. For some people that is hard to read. The book overall was a good story however somewhat depressing. The characters flawed as they were were quite predictable. Some of the chapters seem to drag on. There are six characters in the book, and those characters are the only characters throughout the book that you really hear about. For me this became a little stale. I gave this review three stars which I think is fair. ... show more

  • Amazing writer!
Format: Hardcover
Amazing story. Beautifully written. So many times this happened in Europe. Justice denied to survivors of WWII. Depiction reads like a movie unfolding as you read it!

  • Powerful and Appalling
Format: Paperback
The most familiar horrors of WWII were committed by the Germans/Nazis. However, there remain a whole slew of despicable war crimes committed by citizens of other nations against Jews, Gays, Gypsies, and other minorities, all perpetrators complicit in the hatred and destruction of others based on nothing more substantial than their ethnicity or religion. The horrors occurred not only during WWII and involve not just death, but disposition, including the stealing of homes and valuables, and the creation of a nation of homeless survivors of a genocidal killing spree. The Safekeep explores the post-war situation in the Netherlands. Many don't realize that the Germans occupied Holland; killing, starving, and sending the Dutch to concentration camps and, ultimately, their deaths. Through the exploration of the war's impact on one Dutch family, the reader's eyes are opened to the continued suffering, paranoia, and fear still present in daily life following WWII. By all rights, Dutch soil should belong to the Dutch, but does it? Who owns property and where did the disenfranchised end up going? Though the first half of the novel is meandering, and I found it difficult to pinpoint its direction, the reader is led to a denouement that had me gasping with realization. From the perspective of a dysfunctional family dynamic, to a twisted love story, the painful and everlasting effects of war become apparent. Though a debut novel, Ms. Van Der Wouden writes with surprising skill and accomplishment. I look forward to her future novels. ... show more

  • Post-war Dutch character study
Format: Paperback
I finished this book a few days ago and then listened to the NYT Book Club podcast about it to confirm some of my impressions. Like them, I knew what Eva’s story would reveal because this is, after all, a book that won a National Jewish Book Club award. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading how Isabel behaved and what she believed during the slow reveal. The infamous chapter 10 sex scene was definitely among the most erotic and well-done in my reading history, and not at all gratuitous. More than that I cannot say without venturing more into spoiler territory. After reading a book like this, I appreciated the NYT recommendation of something to read next. Not necessarily on the same topic, but something that provides the same level of exquisite writing and character nuances, and so my copy of The Next Life arrives today. I’ve read an abundance of Holocaust literature since my college years, but only Sophie’s Choice came close to how this book deals with a survivor’s plight years later. ... show more
