SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2024 BOOKER PRIZE WINNER OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD FOR DEBUT FICTION WINNER OF THE 2025 WOMEN’S PRIZE FOR FICTION Shortlisted for the 2025 Dylan Thomas Prize and Aspen Words Literary Prize • A Best Book of 2024: The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Time, The Economist, The Globe and Mail (Toronto), Kirkus Reviews, The Independent, BookPage, The Sunday Times (London) “Remarkable…Compelling…Fine and taut…Indelible.” —The New York Times • “Moving, unnerving, and deeply sexy.” —Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl with the Pearl Earring • “A brilliant debut, as multi-faceted as a gem.” —Kirkus Reviews A “razor-sharp, perfectly plotted” (The Sunday Times, London) tale of desire, suspicion, and obsession between two women staying in the same house in the Dutch countryside during the summer of 1961—a powerful exploration of the legacy of WWII and the darker parts of our collective past. A house is a precious thing... It is 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the war is truly over. Living alone in her late mother’s country home, Isabel knows her life is as it should be—led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis brings his graceless new girlfriend Eva, leaving her at Isabel’s doorstep as a guest, to stay for the season. Eva is Isabel’s antithesis: she sleeps late, walks loudly through the house, and touches things she shouldn’t. In response, Isabel develops a fury-fueled obsession, and when things start disappearing around the house—a spoon, a knife, a bowl—Isabel’s suspicions begin to spiral. In the sweltering peak of summer, Isabel’s paranoia gives way to infatuation, leading to a discovery that unravels all Isabel has ever known. The war might not be well and truly over after all, and neither Eva—nor the house in which they live—are what they seem. Mysterious, sophisticated, sensual, and infused with intrigue, atmosphere, and sex, The Safekeep is “a brave and thrilling debut about facing up to the truth of history, and to one’s own desires” (The Guardian). • Post-war Dutch character study
I finished this book a few days ago and then listened to the NYT Book Club podcast about it to confirm some of my impressions. Like them, I knew what Eva’s story would reveal because this is, after all, a book that won a National Jewish Book Club award. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading how Isabel behaved and what she believed during the slow reveal. The infamous chapter 10 sex scene was definitely among the most erotic and well-done in my reading history, and not at all gratuitous. More than that I cannot say without venturing more into spoiler territory. After reading a book like this, I appreciated the NYT recommendation of something to read next. Not necessarily on the same topic, but something that provides the same level of exquisite writing and character nuances, and so my copy of The Next Life arrives today. I’ve read an abundance of Holocaust literature since my college years, but only Sophie’s Choice came close to how this book deals with a survivor’s plight years later. ... show more

  • A book where the plot and a house are king
Any revelations about the plot would undermine a decent review since plot is everything in this book. The setting is a house owned by Isabel’s uncle in The Netherlands. Isabel lives there alone, almost agoraphobic and fully OCD, knowing that when her uncle dies, the house will go to her brother Louis and she’ll have to leave. In Ann Patchett’s THE DUTCH HOUSE, the house itself is also the protagonist, shaping the behavior of all the characters. The book is a battle of intensities. There is a passionate lesbian love affair, which almost derailed me as a reader. I thought I was reading a compelling story about family rivalry affected by war when suddenly I’m imagining the allure of a woman’s thigh, something I’ve never experienced in real life. The plot re-engaged me, however as powers stronger than sex emerged. Isabel shoves aside both the past and her neuroses, claiming strength, persistence, and openness that the reader would have thought buried forever within her. The book is about love, not only of another person, but of family, of place, of life. ... show more

  • beautiful writing extraordinary book
Isabel lives alone in the house in the suburbs of Amsterdam. She is closed to love of other people with exception of her brothers. She especially loves Hendrik, who is living with his partner in Amsterdam. Her brother Louis brings a girlfriend Eva to dinner with his other siblings. She asks him if she can stay with Isabel while he is away on a job. Isabel resents Eva’s presence. Things in the house begin to disappear. Isabel blames Neelke the cleaner and cook. She is disturbed by all the things that are disappearing. In the midst of all this uneasiness, she falls in love with Eva. The story unfolds from there. She asks Eva to leave the house and sees that Eva has filled her suitcase with many of the missing items. What happens next? ... show more

  • Know before you read
This might be a spoiler for many of you, but this book is about gay relationships. For some people that is hard to read. The book overall was a good story however somewhat depressing. The characters flawed as they were were quite predictable. Some of the chapters seem to drag on. There are six characters in the book, and those characters are the only characters throughout the book that you really hear about. For me this became a little stale. I gave this review three stars which I think is fair. ... show more

  • What a wonderful book!
I never knew where this book was going. But the writing was so good. The story was so well crafted. My only regret is that now I have finished it. I wish there were more. I want to know more about these people.

  • A Beautiful Story that was the Opposite of what I Expected
This book was beautiful. Every time I picked it up, I struggled to put it down. Was it perfect? No. But I loved it all the same. It was not at all what I expected; I thought it would be a psychological thriller and ended up with a historical romance. Historical fiction isn't usually my cup of tea, but I don't regret giving it a try in this instance. It started to drag at the end and I had to drag myself through the last few chapters unfortunately. This doesn't mean I didn't like the book; it was just a bit disappointing to have this beautiful, engaging story hit a wall when it should have picked up. I plan on giving this book a second read in the next year or so. I'd rate it a 4.5, but will unfortunately have to round down because the end was a small let-down. This does not mean it's not one of my favorite books I've read recently. ... show more

  • Beautiful
I picked up this book randomly in a store in London. Read a few pages and decided to put it on my list. I read it in 2 days, what an amazing, surprising story. Loved it.
