  • Great product and service!
Pattern Name: PRO Size: 1000 ft
I did a lot of research before purchasing an underground fence. Based on the reviews and that fact that we wanted to run the wire through 3/4 acre of woods - we wanted the 14 gauge wire and with this product we didn't have to purchase anything separately. The product was shipped promptly and arrived ahead on Friday instead of Monday. I know other reviews said it didn't come with instructions but ours did. With both installation and training instructions. We spent the day Saturday running the wire and placing the flags. The spool of wire unrolled easily. I did have to get more landscape staple as so much of the wire is in the woods, and I bought more flags as well so the woods area limit is clearly shown. We wanted a backyard only solution and didn't want to double the wire so we ended up running the wire up the downspout to the roof with zip ties, along the ridge of the roof (where the ridge vent is) and back down the other end of the house to the other downspout. It was a solution I found online and it worked perfectly. She can still get out of the house and has access only to the backyard. The installation went very smoothly (although I do HATE when my husband is on the roof!) and tested successfully on the first try. Our dog is a rescue - 3 year old female border collie, greyhound, lab mix. She's extremely fast and loves to chase squirrels, rabbits and anything else that moves. In addition, there is a den of fox across the street and they are always hunting in the woods behind our house. She would constantly take off and go through the woods into various neighbors yards chasing things. I was very concerned that she would just run right through the electric fence - while the training documentation that came with it is pretty good - I called their customer service department for advice. Our dog had a very bad experience with an electric fence as a pup and we were told by the previous owner that she refused to go in the backyard so they couldn't use it. The man I spoke with was very knowledgeable and helpful. We talked through the training steps and he was so helpful and spent a long time discussing with me our dogs temperament, my concerns about her breaching and the various steps I should take if that happened. Well, it couldn't have gone better! It only took 3 days to train her. She obviously remembered having the electric fence from before - so that may have helped. We used lots of treats and playing and encouragement to make sure she understood before we tried it off leash. She ran through 3 times over the 3 days and we backed up the training with treats playing and encouragement each time. Ultimately we only had to set it on the second to lowest setting. It's been a few weeks now and she's hasn't breached once since the first 3 days. In the ultimate test, last night I let her out before bed and the fox appeared in the next yard over - barking and trying to coax her to him and away from the kits who were out with him. I was sure she would run through but she stopped short the of wire and just barked for a bit and then came back to me. She got plenty of treats and praise for being so good! It's wonderful to be able to let her out and roam in her 3/4 acre zone without fear of her taking off like a shot. Highly recommend. This product and their customer service is excellent! UPDATE May 2020: Still LOVE my Extreme fence. It has been perfect for 2 years. Then I did notice that the receiver on her collar seemed to be behaving a little strangely. Couldn't be sure there was actually an issue. She breached one day - which she NEVER does so I wondered if it was not beeping. Then she was on the deck and yelped like she got zapped even through she was nowhere near the edge. Then it happened again a week later so I was worried it might be something faulty in the receiver. I called customer service and even though we couldn't determine if it was actually an issue with the receiver, they immediately sent me a new receiver at no cost! They were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend! ... show more

  • Quality product. Very pleased with purchase so far!
Pattern Name: PRO Size: 1000 ft
I'm one to research the heck out of things, and I narrowed my wired dog fence system down to two and chose this. Two weeks later I couldn't be more pleased. I wanted smallest collar unit to be least cumbersome to my dog, yet durable and most features and level of settings. I went with pro grade option and 1,000' of cable. Was surprised when that came on just one spool- great, no splice needed in middle of run! Also it doesn't say it, but it *does* come with a surge protector, which otherwise costs about $25. I rented EZ Trencher to lay cable but that was tough in soggy lawn- kept clogging with mud. Tears up the lawn a bit. You'll have this regardless of fence system you buy of course. But following the training plan and having a system with 7 levels of "correction" and a beep-only mode allowed me to have my dog fully trained in less than a week. We did the beep-only training for 3 full days, emphasizing the praise when running back away from wire. I was careful to try to avoid her approaching the line gradually from parallel, and rather tried to have her approach perpendicularly so she'd know exactly where the "bad" place was and to turn 180 deg back from it. On day 4 I turned the collar to shock, I mean correction, level 3. She's a stubborn but smart little 45 lb pit bull mix so I wasn't sure that would be enough, but didn't want to overdue it either. I first tested it on my arm and was surprised that it was a very low level shock, like a tickle. (Nothing like putting your finger in a light socket, that's for sure.). So I put collar on dog and eventually she wandered close to the line, and I was shocked when she was shocked and let out a loud yelp while jumping a couple feet in the air! Geez I felt really bad, honestly, but hoped that was a major learning point (which it was!) and I proceeded to reprogram the collar down to lowest correction setting of 1. We then did a few days of training still on a long leash and if she got too close she'd jump back as soon as the unit beeped. On day 8 I wasn't thinking and didn't notice that another family member took the collar off her, and took her out on long leash. She saw deer and bolted at them, ripping leash out of my hand. But she stopped right before the flagged, and just barked and whined at the deer 30' away. Then is when I knew this is really working, and I started off-leash training the next day. I'm now at day 11 in total which includes 3-4 days of off-leash and it's going great so far. No breaches, even when barreling full speed to the line with temptations of more deer, squirrels, neighbors and dogs. She has hound mixed in and a very strong prey drive so frankly I'm shocked this is working so well. So far so good! Units works exactly as reported. Default range from wire (set to 10) activates the collar precisely 5' from the wire thru my entire 750' run. Wire held up great- had no breaks even with the trencher often putting stress on the wire. I think the instructions are very good. I did not need to call their support line for anything. But one that that was confusing me for a while was the listing of the 3.different levels of dogs (timid, active, and I think hyper) and then the various shock level setting under each of those, but how do you select 'active" for instance. Eventually I noticed that "active" was written on my box's packaging label, so those are how the systems come and luckily the active one was the proper one for my size/type dog. So hopefully there's no letdown with the equipment or my dog starts breaching the fence. If anything like that happens I'll update this review, but right now I'm extremely please that I selected the Extreme brand dog fence. And bonus of made in USA. Thanks. ***Update 4 months later*** Happy to report the system has continued to work great and the collar battery was still working after 4 full months. (but I could hear that the beep was weaker when I tested the collar today, so I'm replacing the battery now just to be safe. I hope the replacements last as long as the original!) My dog only breached the fence once in the 4 months, and that was shortly after installing it, when I think she "forgot" after seeing one of her dog friends being walked down the street. Hasn't left the yard since which is really impressive being the daily teasings she has of neighborhood dogs, deer, etc. Great that she can tear around our acre of yard freely, and we can take her less frequently to the dog park for exercise. Looking forward to the warmer weather and her hanging out with us on the patio without needing to be leashed. Happy customer, happy dog. ... show more

  • Outstanding Product and Even Better Customer Service
Pattern Name: PRO Size: 1000 ft
The Extreme Dog Fence - Second Generation -2020- Professional Grade Dog Fence is AWESOME. The quality is very heavy duty. I used a trencher to put the cable down 12 - 18 inches. Additionally, I ran the cable under a driveway and a sidewalk. This work was not easy but has nothing to do with the Extreme Dog fence. The installation of the dog fence and control panel was very straight forward. I worked with customer service many times. I was helped by Jayne. She is an outstanding customer service representative. She was very knowledgeable of technical issues, installation issues, and operational issues. Jayne may be the best Customer Service representative that has ever had helped me. I have two recommendations: • If you have an active, energetic, and strong-willed dog, I would get the upgraded dog collar. The dog collar that came with the unit was not strong enough for our dog. The upgraded collar is perfect! • I would purchase and install the surge protector. When we were out of town on vacation, lighting hit the line and ruined the control panel. The Extreme Dog Fence company replaced the control panel via the one-year warranty. However, I have the surge protector now so we will not have future problems. Finally, another positive about Jayne. You need to have some mechanical and electrical know-how to install this fence. If you cannot or do not want to install yourself, Jayne will help you find someone to install. All in all, this is a great product and the support is even better. I highly recommend this dog fence. ... show more

  • Easy to set up once you figure out your layout
Pattern Name: PRO Size: 1000 ft
I had to call for help on my layout. It turns out we need a double loop config, but it allowed for me to actually use less wire than originally planned. My dog didn't directly follow the training regime, opting to avoid the wire area after the first few tries. so disctractions and things like that didn't do anything. And we couldn't give her treats for staying away when it beeped b/c she just stayed away! So we finally just let her go, while we are out there, and she's been fine. There have been some distractions that have come along (other dogs) that have lured her right across, and even standing right in the zone, but we only had the correction set at three. I just need to up it, AND call the dog people of the county to get the stray, roaming dogs! We just buried it at the bottom of the grass where we had to go on the ground, working it into the grass with our hands and then stapling (we had to buy a LOT more landscaping staples at Lowes). For most of our boundary we actually have it on a 3-rail farm fence. The first run is on the top rail and the return run is on the bottom rail - that gives enough separation. I used a heavy-duty stapler to attach it, so that was a lot quicker than the ground parts. I'll try to add a picture of this when I get a chance to snap one. All in all it works fine! ... show more

  • Excellent product. Digging 1200' feet of trench is hard work. Some instructions confused me.
Pattern Name: PRO Size: 1000 ft
I installed the "Pro" system at my home. After doing the first 500' by myself, of the 1200' of linear feet required by the radio signal emitter wire to enclose my property, I put down my trenching shovel and hired some casual labor to finish digging and burying the wire. Perhaps my topsoil is particularly hard packed and filled with rock but the physical task itself was exhausting for me. With three men working, it still took most of a weekend to get the system installed and working. A gasoline powered "cable trencher" would have done the job in just a few short hours. If you can find one to rent. (Home Depot had one but it was booked for the next two weeks) If your soil isn't compacted and filled with rocks. If your soil isn't hyper saturated from recent rain. Those take you back to trenching shovels. Note, speaking from experience, even if you know the electrical building codes in the area where you'll be installing the system, DO NOT assume those codes were followed when your home was built. I looked carefully around the room behind the exterior wall where I wanted the twisted wire to enter my home. I drilled through the wall at the point where a live power line could not possibly be located. POW, BANG, smoke and flames. The wiring had not been done to code. The repairs from there are my own fault and do not count against the product. If you don't have a "stud finder" that can detect live power lines, GET one and use it - they're a lot cheaper than the repairs possible if you don't. I ran the twisted wire through plastic plumbing pipe and fittings where above ground, just to be on the safe side. I also made two pieces of bent aluminum sheet metal to cover the end points in my concrete driveway where the radio wire turned back down from the groove I'd cut with a masonry blade. A two blade width kerf was perfect. I secured them with concrete lag bolts, the wire thus safe from "weed wackers", lawn mowers and automotive traffic. I back-filled the concrete groove with concrete crack caulk for the same reasons. The system worked FIRST try, immediately after hooking the power line up to my UPS with an industrial surge protector and connecting the emitter wires to the transmitter unit. Hurrah for eXtreem dog fence! Programming the unit was a bit more problematic. I'm not technologically challenged, I built the computer on which this is being written, by myself. There are only TWO buttons on the transmitter. They are used in some very specific sequences to set the transmitter frequency, the emitter wire power range and the correction level of the dog collar. When trying to program the transmitter, I could not find any explanation of what the transmitter was displaying in the installation instructions. Nor did I understand the implementation of the various series of sequences used to make the settings and so I had to call the company. . Numbers are shown on the transmitter without any identifiers. (another note - I'm not programming naïve - I can program in Visual Basic, C++ and a couple of other programming languages) When their customer service department returned to work that Monday, their customer service was outstanding! The charming lady who assisted me was happy to follow my request and treated me like an absolute idiot (which I deemed necessary given my difficulties with what should have been a simple process). With her step by step guidance (push these two buttons at the same time, wait five seconds until....then push this button, then that one, then....etc, etc) I had the unit set up and functioning as I wished. She further helped me by going through the whole thing again, while I took notes in the installation manual of the various sequences and what they did. I'm now confident (because I have my notes) that I will be able to make any future changes I find appropriate, without her holding my hand. Then, today (Sunday two weeks later) one of their customer support people again contacted me to find out if I was satisfied with their system. My answer was an emphatic "yes". ... show more

  • Also noticed the collar is of good quality material
Pattern Name: PRO Size: 1000 ft
As usual, the first prerequisite is, was it made in the USA. The Extreme dog fence is. I wanted to install an underground fence one time only, so my choice was the Pro-grade. The 14 gauge wire is very strong and is protected with a plastic type coating that should keep the fence in operation for years. Also noticed the collar is of good quality material. The transmitter is easy to install, and is intuitive to operate. The directions that were supplied are so straight forward that there was no problem with any of the installation. One hiccup was the directions described "post covers" that were not included in my kit. After realizing this, having completing my 2-day project (in rough terrain and woods) on a Sunday, I thought to leave a message for Extreme Dog Fence company so they would call me first thing Monday. To my delight, a pleasant, warm body answered the phone and explained that I received the newest upgrade and did not need the post covers. He then walked me through the complete setup of the transmitter. So they work Saturdays and Sundays. The fence performs as described. Too, I'm very grateful for the detailed instructions on training the dog to respect the fence and his new boundaries. Delighted with the product and results! ... show more

  • Good Product, GREAT Customer Service
Pattern Name: PRO Size: 1000 ft
We have been using the dog fence for almost 2 years now. The installation was easy and straightforward. After several months, we decided to modify the fence to keep our dog out of our flowerbeds, garden, and other areas. Using their waterproof wire splice kits made this process a breeze. I will note, however, that if I were to do it over, I would take careful notes of EXACTLY where I ran the line the first time so it was easy to locate and tie into. Training our dog was also very easy. Today, even with her collar off, she will not leave the yard. The only negative is that we have had two collars break. In both instances, the metal connectors have broken off where they screw into the collar. On the bright side, their customer service is EXCEPTIONAL. I ordered a new one after the first one broke (after more than 6 months of use), not even thinking they would consider replacing it. When the second one broke, I called them and when they found out about the first one, they offered to send me TWO new collars and also send several batteries. I never take the time to write reviews, but in today's world, where customer service seems to have taken a back seat, their approach and willingness to stand behind their product is noteworthy and worth taking the time to write a review. I would not hesitate to recommend this product. ... show more

  • Terrible customer service
Pattern Name: PRO Size: 1000 ft
I have owned this system for about 9 months now. It worked perfectly for the first 6 months, then suddenly stopped working. The manual says that the batteries last about 4 to 6 months so I assumed that the battery needed replaced. I called extreme dog fence and ordered three more batteries. When I receive them I put one in and it would not work so I tried the other, and then the other, but would still not work. Their customer service is an absolute joke to say the least. I have been fighting with them over the last three months to try to get replacement battery/new collar. I finally got them to send me three more batteries but none of those worked either, so surely the problem is with the collar itself, but they keep giving me the runaround and to buy a new collar is $120 ... show more
