I hooked this up and used it without any set-up required with my 2020 Macbook Pro (bc no internal drives anymore...) and then popped in an audio CD. Right away it appeared in my finder menu as 'audio cd' and also as a desktop icon. Once I clicked the 'remove' icon next to it in the apple music app and took the CD out, it removed from desktop and finder window without any issue. I also tried it with a DVD, and the only issue was it asked me to change the world region of the DVD player from its original region (China) to it's current region (US) because the DVD I played didn't match the drive player. After changing it, it played fine. My third test was a basic audio file import from a cd, and was also the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. The .m4a's appeared quickly and populated correctly in my finder window as well as the apple music app, and played without complication; but importing took at least 3x longer when compared to a 2010 macbook pro drive, with same import settings. Once imported though, quality was good and had no issues beyond the speed of import. I really love the USB-C and -A cord options, I have both Apple computers with only -C ports, and intel computers with -A ports, so it makes it a lot easier to transfer between machines, and saves me from having to plug in my dongle and rout data through one more cord for my macbook. The cord for this stores on the bottom of the drive though, which requires it to move back and forth quite a bit, I'm hoping that doesn't cause any repetitive-motion cord breakdown, but only time will tell if that'll be an issue. One other thing I noted that could be a problem, the Amicool drive makes a lot of 'start up' noise when plugged in and the reader is moving into position before inserting any CD/DVD's, I'm only mildly concerned about this right now, but it could suggest problems with construction that could be rubbing or loose or break in the future. For what I paid though, and for as little as I'll use it, I'm happy. I also appreciate the customer service additions in the package, they do their best to make sure you're satisfied. I'd definitely recommend for MBP users who need a CD/DVD drive, and especially one that transfers back and forth between USB-C/-A.

I recently got a new Macbook Air with a USB-C port instead of plain USB ports. I also got an adapter to allow me to still use my USB drives and devices. When I tried to burn a CD from iTunes, my computer couldn't write to my burner through the adaptor. Amicool to the rescue! I purchased an Amicool External DVD drive with USB 3.0 and USB-C cables built into the drive. It's great. Since the cable is attached to the drive, I don't have to worry about misplacing the cable. The drive worked great. It was fast and easy to use. Thanks, Amicool! One small thing - the cable attaches under the drive and you have to bend it back to plug it into your computer. If you don't get it just right the drive is sitting on the cable and so the drive doesn't sit solidly on the table. If you push the cable down hard, it will, but it's easy to not do that. I have an external hard drive with the cable built-in, but instead of coming out of the bottom, it comes out of the side. Maybe for the next upgrade. . . But it's an excellent DVD drive and I'm very happy with my order.

Pile of crap....Avoid buying this pile of trash. The stupid player worked about 3 to 4 times, now when I load any disc it just grinds and grinds and won't recognize any media.....Won't read CD's wont read DVD's, won't read anything. It is junk. When I open Device Manager it constantly bounces in and out of the list of devices attached to my computer, which tells me it isn't the reader or the gearing that moves the reader back and forth, chances are it is just complete junk in the circuits inside, why else would it constantly appear and disappear in my Device Manager list of attached hardware.......****Do yourself a favor and just buy a brand name CD/DVD burner......Don't think you are saving money by buying this cheap Chinese crap or any other off-brand name burner......You will just pour your money down the drain if you buy an off-brand name player like this pile of crap....****

The DVD drive works great. The first I received was visibly defected (broken reader so it turned on but couldn't read any discs). However the replacement came as expected and works great. We primarily intend to use it for playing movies so I can't speak for it's other uses. I attached a picture to show what it should be showing up as if your drive/computer is reading the disc correctly. Go to files and This PC and the DVD drive should be showing up even without a disc in (DVD RW Drive). Once you insert the disc it should show up similar to the picture if it is reading correctly. As suggested in the instructions we downloaded VLC and it plays everything great on Windows 11. If you want to save space for the external drive hooked up to a desktop, we used mounting tape and attached it to the side of our PC. Overall this is a budget friendly DVD drive and is for sure worth it for our needs!
