  • External Compatible Bluray Drives Read/Write Portable Compatible Blu ray Burner USB 3.0
I purchased this external CD drive to read audio CDs I borrowed from the public library. I have a CD-ROM/RW drive on my computer, but for some reason, these CDs weren’t working with it. I decided to buy an external drive that would also be compatible with my MacBook Pro, so I could use it while traveling. Initially, I was disappointed because, when I connected it to my hypervisor workstation to use with a virtual machine running Windows 10, it didn’t work. I’ve had success connecting other USB devices to VMs, regardless of the OS, but this drive wasn’t recognized. So, be sure to read reviews carefully before purchasing if you need compatibility with virtual machines. However, I was able to use it successfully on my MacBook Pro, and it read the CDs without any issues. ... show more

  • Do not buy, does not plug and play, EXTREMELY frustrating
Bought this so I could watch blu rays on my pc, it was inexpensive relatively so I gambled and bought it. It does not work whatsoever with my windows 10 machine. It is region locked to region 2, and I am unable to change it. As a result it can not read any discs and none of my media players work with it. I only got it to "work" by downloading some really cheap software that bypasses the region or something? I work with computers and software all day, this is a bad product and I should have known better, always read the reviews folks! Like a lot of products on Amazon this is just some cheap junk that was probably sitting in a warehouse in central China or something. Spend the extra 10 or 20 dollars and get a brand name drive because this will drive you out of your mind. ... show more

  • Frustrating to get it set up but it does what I need it to in the end
UPDATE 12/8/24: So I've been using this for a couple months, pretty regularly putting it through it's paces. The initial setup I detailed before was the only real negative; since then I've been quite pleased. It still feels a lot more durable than my old drive and the performance has been more reliable overall. I stlil think it's slower than my old drive (that died shortly after I got this one!) but it functions at a steady and fairly reliable speed. And physically it doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart when I'm running it lol. If you've got the stomach troubleshoot past the initial setup, I think I'd recommend this. It works quite well day-to-day. Original Review: I bought this based on the Wirecutter review. Honestly, the more I go with their choices the more iffy I find them to be... I will say that once I got this running it does the job I got it for. Now I have this and an older, cheapo external DVD-only drive. Of the two of them this one feels more solid in the build of the enclosure and tray mechanism. It seems fine build-wise. This does have the USB cable integrated; it does not have a USB port and you can not use your own usb cables. So if the cable ever goes bad the whole thing will be useless. The cable has both a USB-A connector and a USB-C connector on the end. At first I tried connecting via USB-C. My Windows 11 machine could detect it and start spinning discs, but when trying to read off the discs it would quickly start getting disconnected from the computer and leave the disc spinning endlessly until I ejected it manually. Based on the error the program I was using gave when this happened and a bit of research online, it seems that it could not get sufficient power to drive. In the end I could not get it to work over the USB-C port I was using on the front my computer. That said, the (not very well written) instruction manual does insist that you "Please plug it into the rear USB to ensure sufficient power." And I did disregard that because it's a pain in the butt to get to the rear USB-C outlet. So maybe it would, in fact, work using that rear USB-C port. And it also says to not use with USB hubs or extension cables. So heads-up that getting sufficient power to the device might be an issue. All THAT said, I used the USB-A connector and plugged it into the USB-A port on the front of my computer and it works swimmingly. So take all that information as you will. Now, the second issue I ran into was putting discs in and immediately getting a Region Code error when it tried to read anything. ("ILLEGAL REQUEST:MEDIA REGION CODE IS MISMATCHED TO LOGICAL UNIT REGION") I came on here and see other people have run into similar errors with this drive. Some more research online and I found out how to change the region code of the drive itself in Windows 11 and it worked; the drive came set to Region 2 (Europe) even though I'm in Region 1 (North America). Which was frustrating but fixable. So if you're running into that problem, look up how to change the region code of an external DVD or Blu-Ray drive in Windows 11 (or whatever OS you're using). For me, it wasn't too complex: Go to Device Manager (right click the start button), click "DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES" on the list, then right click this specific unit in that dropdown (it shows as MATSHITA BDRE UJ240 for me), click Properties, click the DVD Region tab and click your country in the list and it'll set it to your region. That dialog box does show what the region is currently set to and, like I said, mine was set to the wrong region. Apparently there is a limit to how many times you can change the Region Code so be mindful to not screw it up. Now, this isn't too complicated and instructions are online. That said, it is more complex than a general user should expect for a product like this. Be aware that you might have to tweak a couple settings before you can get this to work. Anyway, with those issues resolved it works as expected now. It maybe reads a little slower for DVDs than my other DVD-only drive but it gets the job done and seems to handle Blu-Rays well (though I've only played one blu-ray in it so far). And frustrations with the cable and the Region Code aside, it feels more substantially built than my other drive. So in the end I'm satisfied enough, but I was frustrated at first because it didn't work smoothly right out of the box. Summary: - Decent build quality - Integrated, non-replaceable USB cable - USB-C connector could not get enough power from the port I used. Instructions DO specify to use ports on back of your PC to get sufficient power and I did not do that. It does get enough power to run through the USB-A connector via the port on the front of my computer. - Drive was set to the wrong region code and unable to read discs (movies). If you get a Region Code error, you'll have to change the drives region code yourself in your operation system's settings. Frustrating to setup, but it gets the job done, so far, once I did. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • Thin, cheap, and works with blu-rays
My tricorn hat with a skull and bones on it says that this dvd player makes my blu-rays last forever. Windows detected and read the files with no extra hassle, and it's pretty cheap so I'd say it's pretty great. It's thin as well so it puts away nicely.

  • Total Waste
This reader does not work. The instruction manual is poorly written and requires a "free" proprietary software (that constantly pushes you to get the pro version), and will not play discs at all until you have changed the region on the device (thank you to another reviewer who figured that out). Even then, the video quality was extremely corrupted and choppy on the recommended software, and nonexistent on VLC Media Player. I'm so disappointed and frustrated, as this was rated as one of the best disc readers available by a publication I no longer trust. Perhaps *you* can get it to work, but it required far too many suspicious downloads and monkeying around for me. Do not recommend. ... show more

  • The speed is perfect.
Easy to use, pluged directly into side of my laptop. Small and portable. Works with new and old games and programs. Upload and download speeds are a breeze. Must keep it flat and in one place or it has trouble reading disks.

  • Not sturdy...
The drive worked for about a month, then I found a small piece of plastic on the floor. It was the pin that keeps the tray closed so the tray won't say shut anymore making the whole drive unusable. It was nice while it worked. Would not recommend. It's just too fragile.
