I am not sure what I was expecting from black sand, but this sand is incredibly black. I mixed it with some coconut substrate and even though there were equal parts substrate to sand, everything is black now. When the sand is wet it can spread the black coloring (sand, not a separate dye) so some of my terrarium occupants have black sand on them. However, the black sand actually makes things (plants, shells, hermit crabs, etc.) stand out more, and overall, the cage looks less messy. It is very easy to spot moving critters on the black background, and it seems to help trap some of the light that spills into the cage from the heat lamp. The sand did not have any clumps of non-sand material, and when wet it turns into sand that can be molded, rather than turning into wet mud. I also purchased 2 bags of this sand and both were of consistent quality. *This sand is being used for a hermit crab terrarium. It is mixed with a coconut substrate, and will remain moist until changed. It is also under a heating lamp at most times. I will update with any significant changes. ... show more

Perfect product. For anyone curious of it and where you want to use it its versatile. But do NOT put it in water or any aquariums if you want your aquatic plants and aquatic pets to live. Theres a reason aquatic sand exists this product specifically comes from an arid environment and is only meant to stay dry and is for reptiles who have a natural dry habitat. Do not use in aquariums yes your going to find that its got some minerals in it not safe for fish or any aquatic species its not meant for consumption or water its literally sand sifted from dirt in an arid location where theres not much water. Be careful if you order this sand with other items. I ordered a few things as one does when you make a Amazon order, and the sand was packaged with a few fake plants and one bag came just fine while the other came completely busted wide open. The sand it's self is really pretty and exactly what I was wanting for my leopard gecko enclosure but now I have to carefully clean it out of the big box it exploded in. When dealing with egg laying critters colored sands help I normally do a layer of neon under the Blk and it allows you to spot digging areas fast! It’s worth its value! It’s not super bulky for safety so they won’t eat big bits and it’s soft to the touch so it won’t rub them raw either. its appearance is as pictured.
