For several years I've been dealing with significant neck pain when I sleep. I generally toss and turn throughout the night, moving my pillows around into various positions trying to find the comfortable place. A couple years ago I decided I'd had enough and set out to find a pillow that would end my neck pain and also allow me to sleep through the night. It's literally been many years since I've been able to sleep comfortably throughout an entire night. I'm a side sleeper and probably have been turning over & readjusting my pillow every 20 to 30 minutes every single night for years. So as I was saying, a couple years ago I set out to find a great pillow. I tried all so called "Hotel pillows" and some were ok, but none really cushioned my head and were completely soft at the same time. I tried many waffle style pillows that claimed they were perfect for those with neck pain, still had neck pain and tossing & turning. After trying so many memory foam & other specialty pillows, I think I tried about 9 different pillows, I finally decided to bite the bullet and purchase the combo memory foam surrounded by goose down pillow made by a company that sounds like schmempurpedic. This pillow was $150 (I got a two for one deal over the Memorial day weekend which was the only way I justified spending this much on a pillow) and it was more comfortable than the others I had tried, but still not really a great pillow and I was still tossing & turning all night and waking up with a stiff neck, never finding a pillow G spot. The reason I hadn't tried an all Goose Down pillow during my search was because my mom had several really nice all down pillows, and I had tried them and my head would almost immediately sink through the down to the mattress surface level. Even after fluffing them up it would only be a matter of minutes before I would find my head flat against the mattress. With her pillows you would have to fold the pillow in half to keep from sinking down too much. I can remember seeing her sleeping with those pillows folded under her head. I found that when I folded the pillow it just wasn't nearly as comfortable as it should have been for a down pillow, so I didn't even include them in my search. The other reason I didn't include them was of course the price. Good Goose Down pillows generally cost around $200 and more and that was just not in my budget. So now I've lived with the neck pain night after night for too many years and I thought I was fed up before, but now I just had to do something no matter how expensive. I started doing research on Down pillows and came to find that there are many different types. Duck Down, Goose Down, 550 fill power 650, 750, 800, 900. Fill power for those of you who don't already know is a measure of how much down is stuffed into each cubic inch. A 550 pillow will cost a good bit less because it simply has considerably less Down fill than say an 800. Also Goose down from what I read is more desirable than Duck Down. Apparently it's longer lasting and a little warmer & softer than Duck Down. Now after much research and reading countless reviews I came to the realization that my mom's pillows must have been in the 550 range. So as I said in the beginning, I decided to bite the bullet and I purchased the 800 fill power Goose Down pillow from East Coast Bedding for $159, $173 with tax. OMG!!! It's only been a week, but I've been experiencing neck pain free nights, and I'm sleeping throughout the night only turning over a couple times during the night. I'm waking up after only 6 hours feeling refreshed & ready to start my day with a smile on my face, rather than dragging myself out of bed after ten hours of trying to sleep with my neck feeling horrible and a bit of a headache. If I'd had any idea how much of a difference this pillow would make I'd have plunked down the $170 a decade ago no matter what I might have had to sacrifice in order to afford it. It also is both supportive and incredibly soft while molding to your head, and my head does not sink down into this pillow like the cheaper 550 fill pillows, it just cradles my head so perfectly when sleeping on my back or side. My only advice is, don't cheap out & get the lower fill power for $50 less. If you experience neck pain of just toss & turn due to an inability to find a comfortable place on your pillow, just get the 800, it's totally worth the price! This pillow is the, "Pillow G spot!!!" This is a wonderfully soft but firm 100% down pillow. (Yes, it is 100% down fill - the tag lists 90% down because the other 10% is the fabric for the pillow!) It is exactly as advertised. So why has it gotten some bad reviews? As a long-time, down pillow user, I have learned from my own mistakes what to look for and what to expect when buying down pillows. So after reading the negative reviews about this (and other down pillows), it seems to me that one big reason some people are unsatisfied with their purchase is that they had false or unrealistic expectations about down pillows. So here's some quick information about this pillow for my fellow down pillow enthusiasts and some additional info for you lucky newbies discovering the wonders of down for the first time. I hope it will helps in your decision to buy this (or any) down pillow. Quick info for Down Pillow Experts: This is a 100% white goose down pillow (no chunky feathers). It has a firm but soft 800 fill power and is perfect for side sleepers like myself. It does not come with an additional outer shell like some more expensive options but the pillow's cotton-sateen fabric is 400 thread count and does a great job (breathes well and very little down comes out). The edges are standard stitched, not piped or gusseted. I detected no odor at all from the pillow when it arrived. I have been unable to find any warranty information about this pillow through Amazon or elsewhere online and there is also no information as to whether or not it has been hypoallergenically treated (I am not allergic to water fowl, it is not an issue for me). But the price is one of the lowest I have found for the fill power and the quality is in par with far more expensive down pillows I have purchased in the past. I am very happy with the pillow and I plan to purchase at least two more now that I see that Amazon sells them in a 2-pack for a great savings! Additional Info for Newbies: If you've never slept on a down pillow before, then you are in for a treat! Down pillows are absolutely the softest pillows out there. They breath better than other materials so your head doesn't get too hot and the soft down contours to your head so you get excellent support that feels like you are sleeping on a cloud. But if you are used to sleeping on pillow filled with some other material (latex, polyester, gel, foam, feather), you may have become accustomed to other types of pillows and down may not be what you expect. Most other pillow fills are more solid and more rigid than down. As down is composed of lots of tiny soft duck or goose feathers, the filling can be adjusted (pushed around) within the case to shape the pillow. Newer down pillows will have more loft and will seem to almost fluff themselves. But as time goes by, the down will get soiled and break down slightly causing it to lose some of its firmness. You can extend the life of your down pillow by fluffing it after use and cleaning it at least once a year (down pillows should be professionally dry cleaned unless the label says otherwise). If you take proper care of your down pillow, it can last you for decades! Things to look for when buying a down pillow: The first thing you should look at is what percent of the filling is down. This particular pillow is a 100% down but some are a mixed down/feather fill. Pillows with feather fill are less expensive but not as soft and can sometimes feel "chunky." Secondly, you should look at the fill power of the pillow. This is an 800-fill power which is considered medium-firm and is great for side sleepers. If you are a back sleeper, you might consider a 700 fill-power for a slightly softer pillow. Stomach sleepers might want an even lower fill power. Thirdly, make sure you are not allergic to down! While many pillows are specially treated to be hypoallergenic, this pillow does not list this in its description. So if you are not sure, you may want to look at a different pillow or a down-alternative pillow. Down alternatives are pretty nice and much less expensive than down, but they are not the same and you can definitely tell the difference. Finally, consider price. Higher fill power increases the price (more down = more money) but other refinements like additional pillow covers, gusseted sides, brand names, and longer manufacturer's warranties can also increase the price. Yes, we all want the security of a long manufacturer's warranty, but be honest, outside of expensive electronics, when was the last time you sent something back to a manufacturer under warranty? And are you really going to send back a pillow in 5 years if you are no longer happy with it!? Again, I have purchased many down pillows over the last few decades and this pillow is a very good quality -- better than some I have paid more for in the past. I hope this information helps. Queen size, firm 800 fill power 2 pillow set. Because all down pillows are expensive, before buying these, I did a lot of comparison shopping both on and off Amazon. I read up on fill power for down as well as what to expect from down vs feathers or combinations of the two. I looked at prices for items of similar description and specifications and customer reviews for satisfaction. Eastcoast Bedding ticked all the boxes. The pillows are big and fluffy, and really comfy when sitting upright to read in bed. I'm a side sleeper. They are not heavy or too firm and compress perfectly to support my neck. The cotton covers are soft and well-sewn but I went ahead and ordered some good zip covers for them anyway because I want to keep them looking their best. It is actually kind of fun to fluff them up at bedtime, BTW and only takes a few seconds. I love sleeping on them they were a worthwhile purchase. There was no weird or bad smell as some negative reviews mentioned. They were packed in a spotless zip case that I can reuse to store extra bedding or out of season clothing.
