  • Good Value for the Money
Espresso machines have come a long way in the past 10 years! I began my espresso journey over ten years ago with an entry level machine that costs the same as this Mattinata but it had far fewer features and was horrible at properly steaming milk. This machine is far superior for the same price. It is not for everyone though. Here are my thoughts about both the good and the bad with my experience with it so far. PROS - Does automatically adjust pressure and temp in realtime. In other words, the machine is automatically adjusting to your grind size and tamp to try and get correct extraction. Great for beginners. - There is pre-infusion. - Heats-up fairly quickly. - It has a stainless steel thermal-block. Some other machines have an aluminum heating mechanism that can contaminate your water. - The steam wand is legit. There is enough steam pressure to create great microfoam. It takes some practice but you can do latte art. Not the photos, that latte art was my very first try at steaming milk on this machine. It only got better from there. - One can manually adjust just about everything from water temp to shot time. - It has a pressure gage to help fine-tune manual extraction. - Includes a well written, printed and clear instruction manual. CONS - This is an entry level machine with just a 51mm basket. Commercial machines have a 58mm basket while mid-level machines such as Breville have a 54mm basket. You can still get decent shots but not quite the sweetness as I get with my 58mm bottomless portafilter on my Gaggia. - The included portafilter baskets are presurized double walled baskets. These are more fool proof than bottomless baskets but they limit you. These baskets are basically training wheels for new home baristas. The good news is that you can purchase better portafilters and baskets for the machine from third parties. CONCLUSION Should you buy this machine? If you are brand new to home espressos then this is probably the machine for you. You are getting a much better machine than a DeLonghi at a similar price. In fact, this machine is equivalent to a $300 DeLonghi. So definately get this at under half the cost. If you do have $300 to spend however, then I would recommend a Breville Bambino. It has a larger 54mm basket and the thermal-block is a bit quicker to heat with greater steam power. Hope this helps! ... show more

  • The 20 bar pressure makes for a very smooth, and strong coffee. With cream it needs nothing else.
This little 20 bar expresso machine makes a beautiful and tasteful cup of expresso. It packs a lot of flavor potential into a small machine for an expresso sized coffee. This expresso maker is the perfect size for my coffee bar (see photo) in that it is just slightly larger than 1' long, 1' high, and 1/2 foot wide. It comes with three different filters that fit firmly in the portafilter so that the pressure of the machine doesn't push coffee out between the seams. You can preheat the boiler my using an empty filter and pressing the 1 cup button to put hot water into the cup to release just enough water for machine and cup warming. That helps provide for a better coffee temperature. Then you put in the grids to make your actual cup of expresso. I'm using a Robusta coffee which gives a slightly nutty flavor to a full bodied cup of expresso. Although the machine does come with a frothing wand, I find it more convenient to just use a barista sweet creamer from the grocery store to add cream to the top of the expresso so that it looks like a cappuccino. This sweet cream is made for coffee machines and looks like a can of whipped cream. The taste is exquisite and your brew needs nothing more. When you first turn on the 20 bar machine to preheat, you'll notice that the dial is initially below the target pressure. Once you select the 1 or 2 cup button, you'll then see the pressure rise to the target of 20 bar for the perfect mix of coffee extraction. The provided manual gives you tips on what to look for if you are over or under this target. For example, using the wrong grind for your coffee can affect extraction, and the manual gives you the best tips to tweak your system for that perfect sweet spot for optimum extraction. The pressure gauge becomes you guide to help determine if you have the best cup possible and what to do if you aren't at the sweet spot. ... show more

  • Great for beginners
I am a beginner and I feel this is a great machine. I was using Nespresso before and I got increasingly concerned by the lack of being able to know what they were putting into these cartridges. With this machine, I can get whatever coffee I want, grind it (separetely) and I know exactly what I am drinking. I like the compact size of this machine. It comes with a drawback, it only has a 51mm wand, vs the 58mm of bigger/more expensive models. I'd say it is still OK for beginners but it may be a limiting factor especially if you like to do higher quantities of coffee. The steam wand works, i am not yet very comfortable with it, but I am able to make milk foam. I like that the pressure control is automated, so the machines tries to adjust and get the best brew possible based on the conditions. One less thing I have to learn, for now. The machine is able to do either one or two cups at a time. It comes with some very basic accessories (a tamper and dosing cup), you will need to purchase a stainless steel frother cup for the milk separately. Operation is very simple and automated with very few adjustments, but you can still adjust the coffee shot size. Not much else to add - it's a very simple machine that works well for me as a beginner. Even if I update to a more expensive machine later on, I like the simplicity of this one and I completely imagine keeping it at least as a spare, if not as a secondary machine especially for coffee-based drinks that do not necessarily need an absolutely, OCD-style perfect brew. At this price - it is a great starter machine, great entry point and upgrade from Nespresso, K-cups etc. ... show more
