Description

From the Manufacturer The Passport 8500 has been hailed as the most revolutionary radar/laser detector ever. Now, Escort is raising the bar again. The Passport 8500 X50, the next generation of the 25-year-old favorite, is the most advanced and sophisticated radar and laser detector ever. The Passport 8500 X50's V-tuned radar receiver provides extreme detection range on all police radar, conventional radar, and "instant-on" radar, including the new POP X band mode, and up to 50 percent more range than the original Passport 8500 on the all-important K and Ka bands. In addition, the detector's digital signal processing (DSP) provides maximum range with minimum false alarms. The unit also includes a patented AutoSensitivity mode that intelligently distinguishes real threats from other known sources of radar, virtually eliminating false readings. Passport 8500 X50's multiple high-performance laser sensors provide maximum police radar (lidar) warning, with superior off- axis protection. The detector also offers three high-resolution meter modes--a standard bar graph, exclusive ExpertMeter, and SpecDisplay. In ExpertMeter mode, the Passport 8500 X50 can identify band and relative signal strength on up to eight radar signals simultaneously, while with SpecDisplay, the Passport 8500 X50 will show you the actual frequency of the radar signal. Adding to the unit's versatility is a reprogrammable microprocessor, which can be re-worked to detect new radar and laser threats. Features include: 360-degree radar and laser detection Advanced reprogrammable digital signal processing AutoSensitivity mode automatically reduces false alarms EZ-Programming allows instant customization 3 high-resolution meter modes Ultra-bright red matrix display with 280 LEDs Multiple high-performance laser sensors Built-in earphone jack Completely immune to the VG-2 "detector-detector" 1-year limited warranty What's in the Box Passport 8500 X50 radar and laser detector, quick- release windshield mount, built-in earphone jack, coiled SmartCord, quick reference card, travel case, user's manual.

  • A nice upgrade.
Style: Red display Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
This is my third radar detector from Escort and my second Passport. I owned one of the original Escorts as well as the original Passport. The original Passport served me well for 20 years, but I recently took a job that put me on the road much more, so I decided it was time for an upgrade. I had planned on purchasing a Valentine One, but after reading the reviews here and elsewhere I decided to go with the Passport. It seems it affords the same protection at a much lower price. Additionally, it has some nice features the Valentine doesn't. For example, it automatically reduces the sounds of the alerts after warning you. I understand, this needs to be done manually on the Valentine. Additionally, if you would like to run in stealth mode, you can turn off the display on the unit and use the lights on the cigarette lighter as the indicator. (You can also mute the alarm from the cigarette lighter plug). With the Valentine, this is an extra cost add on. I think the arrows on the Valentine would be nice, but I wasn't willing to pay that much more for them. It does have laser detection, but my understanding is that unless you incorporate a laser jammer, it doesn't do you much good. Escort does sell a jammer that does integrate with the Passport 8500, so this is another plus if you need laser protection. I have read some reviews that says Amazon is not an authorized dealer. I contacted Escort before my purchase and they told me that if purchased directly from Amazon you are fine. With some of the resellers, that may not be the case. This is important if you ever have a problem with the unit as they only honor warranties from purchases from authorized resellers. As far as the red versus blue goes, I would have liked the blue display, but it is only cosmetic and the purpose of a radar detector is function. That being said, if you are going to buy a radar detector, buy a good one. The Passport 8500, the Valentine One and there is a highly rated Bel detector that will serve you well. Most of the rest will just tell you when you're about to recieve a ticket. Finally regarding the cigarette lighter functionality. It is only useful if the cigarette ligher is visible from the drivers seat. In two of my cars it is hidden by the steering wheel, limiting it usefulness. All in all, I'm pleased with the purchase. I paid less for this than I did for the original 20 years ago. 3/25/2010 - just a note: I did end up with a ticket using this. It was from a well place motorcycle officer on a curve using laser. What surprised me is that the warning was enough I was able to scrub over 5 miles an hour off my speed. (With laser you are warned you are about to get a ticket unless you have a laser jammer, unlike radar which gives you a much longer warning). If I had realized the speed limit was so low, I might have been able to scrub some more. As it was he only got me for 71 when I was doing close to 80 when the laser hit me. The range is pretty incredible. I have started picking up radar well over a mile before I see the patrol car. ... show more

  • Complete Radar Detection Package for $300.00 or so.
Style: Red display Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
After reviewing the specs, features and real-time performance the Escort-Passport 8500 x50 unit offers, I simply had to upgrade to a REAL, user-friendly, out-of-the-box & ready for business radar detector. This is THE unit to have if you want to stay within the $300.00 price point, if not, buy the 9500ix, and OWN the road you travel. With a comprehensive and verified list of outstanding features including a microprocessor that is upgradeable (COOL; would have been really COOL about 10 yrs ago), consistent road-tests and evaluations that produce measureable and observable results along with the on-going praise and "Outstanding Performance" reviews relative to measuring, verifying and explaining all of the features and functions the Escort 8500 x50 proudly claims to have from Radar Roy's Site (his reviews are highly favorable of course), coupled with the numerous real world driving experiences and favorable reviews from a friend, my brief 'test-drive' with this unit was all that was needed to convince me to switch from an older, dated Whistler model to something that was actually manufactured this decade that really does offers an easy-to-program unit that will outperform anything you've been using (unless, you've already crossed the $300.00 threshold). This particular unit combines nearly everything required for true 'protection' and 'detection' of multiple radar units utilzing virtualy all available frequencies and gadgets regardless of road or weather conditions. It's a true "Long Range" model that has provided me with more than ample time to 'adjust' my current driving situation. I use the Expert Mode to access a easy-to-see and understand visual graph depicting info on up to 8 bogeys along with their related strength meters; the Smart-Cord is just that, listen to it or mute and continue; the minimal 'false' alarms is a welcome relief from other previously utilized units and the choice of 'colors' (red or blue) is helpful as well. I selected the RED unit as it is still common practice for current military vehicles, aircraft and boats or other situations requiring adequate night or low-light vision to use RED lights. Red light measures about 700 nm; Blue light about 400-500 nm. Thus, they occupy nearly opposite ends of the 'light spectrum' we as humans can perceive. As we have both rods and cones for visual perception / function / acuity, using RED light allows the rods to work under low light situations or 'scotopic' (dark vision situations i.e. cockpit of your ride)instead of relying on cones, whose job is bright, day light work with color discrimination. Blue LOOKS COOL and IS; RED is FUNCTIONAL and logical; operational. Buy this one or the 9500ix, PERIOD. A Great Device. A.Womack ... show more

  • Best Investment For Long Commute
Style: Red display Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I have a long, daily, one hour highway commute and racked up several tickets. I finally had enough and purchased the Escort Passport 8500 X50. This detector saved my butt many times!! It's the best radar detector I've ever owned. I use the default settings for highway and they're fine. It's nice having the option to silence the X band but I'm not ready to do that yet since there is only one X band alert during the trip. The auto-mute function after initial alarm is great. The detection range is amazing and it detects over hills and around corners in some cases. Often, after detection, I find myself slowed down completely and waiting for the radar threat to be within visual range. Threat detection from rear is just as good. No need for an arrow to tell you it's detecting from the rear. When a threat is detected from the rear the signal strength gets stronger gradually. ... show more

  • Detects police radars most of the time.
Style: Red display Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I usually don't drive fast, but I got my first ticket followed by 2 more in a space of 3 days after moving to a suburban area. There may have been a "drive to get more revenue" by the cops. One ticket I got was for changing a lane without giving the indicator while driving at 38 mph (in a 35 mph zone) on an empty road. The cop must have been desperate to hand out the ticket! That last ticket really annoyed me as it got counted as a moving violation...so I got this detector. Since I have this detector, I've not gotten any tickets but it's mostly because I learned about the cops hiding places and drive within the speed limit in those areas. This is my first radar so I can't compare its performance with anything else but it detects police cars even if I can't see them. However, many times it does not detect any signal even if you are looking at the cop driving on the opposite side of the road or right behind you. This detector only signals one in three cop cars that I physically see. It could be that the cop cars don't have their radar on but I can't be sure. One time I saw all cars in front of me slowing down even though the posted speed limit was greater so I automatically slowed my car down although the road was fairly empty, and then I realized I was in a school zone. I must have missed the flashing yellow light. Within seconds, I saw this cop aiming directly at my car with a pop radar gun through the front windshield but the detector was completely silent. I came back and read the manual and realized you have to TURN ON the pop radar feature, it's not turned on by default! On auto mode it picks up a lot of X bands especially from drug stores like CVS and Walgreen's and also from gas stations. Some car dealerships set off the laser very loudly but now that I am used to the sound, I don't panic like I used to. The police is usually on the Ka band and rarely the K band. I have definitely started driving even slower since I got this radar detector especially as the beeping keeps reminding me to go slow, even if it is a false alarm from a gas station. A couple of times it has saved me when I was going at 50 mph in a 45 mph zone, I heard the chirp of Ka band and slowed down as the cops may be in "revenue overdrive" and may give a ticket even for 5 miles over. However, it detects the police car when you're almost next to it so it will be too late to slow down if I was driving at 60mph. I've learned the key is to drive safe and never more than 10-12 miles over speed limit. Sometimes when you may be in a tearing hurry and tempted to drive fast the radar will chirp and remind you to slow down, even if you just passed a gas station! ... show more

  • Best Damn Detector out there.
Style: Red display Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
Regardless of what anyone else says. This detector is great. The Mute button on the cord is the best invention since sliced bread!! Someone stated in a review that a CON was that you had to Turn on the POP every time you turned your car on. Hes a Dummy. You turn it on ONCE and it stays on. It Has saved me Numerous times and paid for itself 10 fold!!! Tons of options, great display options, Picks up Several different radars at ONE TIME. easy to read in PRO mode!! LOVE IT!! Regarding: The Guy talking about the detector going crazy due to voltage when he turns it on. Sounds to me like you have a Crappy Car. or a Problem with you electrical system. Try it in another vehicle. I have never had that problem and have had this detector for over 1 year. (knock on wood) The Passport has a mode you can turn it too, and it will tell you what the voltage is, going thru your car. Check it out. ... show more

  • Beware!
Style: Red display Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I ordered the Passport X50 from Amazon to save the $18 shipping Escort Radar was charging. I was told by someone at Escort Radar that Amazon was an authorized reseller. After having my detector on for ten minutes (right out of the box), it did three "SELF CAL"s, then said "SERVICE REQUIRED". I called Escort Radar and was told "If you let the car power up the unit when you start the car, the voltage can be all over the place and the unit gets confused. You must first start the car, and then use the thumbwheel to turn on the detector." It makes some sense, but if this is really the case, why don't they put those instructions in their manual? After trying this many times, the unit was "still confused", so I returned it for a replacement. My second detector worked for maybe thirty minutes before the same thing happened. This time Escort Radar told me "if you leave it plugged into the cigarette lighter over night, this has been found to cause problems." Well my lighter power goes off when I turn off the ignition, so this doesn't apply. Escort Radar also told me that "excessive heat" has been causing them problems. Now we have had a few days of 100° heat, and I'm sure the car gets hotter parked in the sun, but the design engineers should have accounted for these conditions plus some margin when you design something that is supposed to work in a car. It gets a lot hotter in other parts of the country. There are no warnings in the manual about not using it above 90° or leaving it off in a hot car. You wouldn't design a ski that doesn't work below 35°, would you??? The most troubling part of my conversation with Escort Radar service department was they told me Amazon is not an authorized reseller, and they have no idea where they are getting the units from. Furthermore, they will not honor any warranty nor will they ever repair the unit, not even for money. ... show more

  • Works. Looks cool. Prevents tickets. What else do you need to know?
Style: Red display Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I was going 75 in a 40, up a hilly highway last night, to get by a logging truck before a long stretch with no passing zones. There was some downhill traffic, but no cop-like vehicles I could see. But Mr. Escort blinked his lights (the one on the power supply as well as the blue LEDs) and sounded his chirp (which is loud enough for me!) and I buried the brake pedal to get my bimmer down to the legal speed. Then the signal went dead. None of the downhill vehicles was the fuzz, so my first thought was "dangit, that false alarm is going to get me stuck behind this truck for five miles!" but then I saw Mr. Smokey in the trees just off the road, using pop-radar in his unmarked car. He had just clocked the downhill cars, that's where I got my signal. "BUzzzzzz!" Mr Escort said again when the copper clocked me, and I'll bet HE thought "a BMW going 40? He knew I was here." But once the cop was out of view,I zoomed by the truck , and thanked the Escort Co. for the 50th time this year. I have not gotten a SINGLE ticket since I installed mine, and many, if not most, would have been unavoidable without it. If you drive a lot, and you don't like being passed by grandmas, BUY THIS DETECTOR. Don't quibble about the price, it will save you three times the $ in the first year. I never owned any other, so I can't say if it's better than a V1 or a Cobra, but I do know I am VERY glad I bought mine. ... show more

  • This unit has saved me many times already
Style: Red display Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
My wife bought me the Escort Passport 8500 X50 after I won a bet with her over who could lose more weight. I had done a lot of shopping, reading and research on radar detectors and told her which one I wanted. I could not be happier with how this machine works. I just leave it on the default "Auto" setting and it does what it is supposed to do. What I have confirmed with owning this unit is that there are 4 major alerts that I receive while driving. By far the scariest but also the least often heard alert is "Laser". There is no warning for that one. But since you need to be travelling at a speed for 1/4 of a mile to really be doing that speed it gives you a fighting chance. 2 times I have been hit with the "Laser" while going over the posted limit, I immediately slowed some and avoided a ticket. I think the most common alert is the "K" band alert. That is the one from automatics doors at stores and really old radar. It is on many freeways in posted radar areas. So far the one that gets ME the most alert is the "Ka" alert. I have never got that alert and not found the police unit that came with it. If you get a "Ka" you know that the law is present. It may not always be pointed at you but it is out there. The one band I do not understand is the "X" band. I have never seen a police unit when getting hit with the "X" band so I am not sure what it's real use is. I am not a bad driver nor do I think I drive overly fast or agressive. I drive 60+ miles every day and need to get places so I generally run 5 to 15 MPH over the posted limit when traffic allows. Now I know where the speed traps are well before I get there. ... show more
