  • Near flawless performance
The GT-S50 has performed flawlessly on approximately 5,000 scans in the last three weeks or so. I have had about a dozen jams, and all but two were caused by stapled copies I had not found prior to the scan. Most of the scans were copies of letter sized documents, both front only and duplex. They ranged from correspondence to crowded network diagrams and hand-drawn designs. Additionally, there were hand-written letters on various sizes of paper (including odd shapes). I also scanned receipts of various sizes, mixing and matching fairly easily. The scanned images (at lower settings) were all fine. In fact, little was gained in most cases going from 200 dpi to 600 dpi, which I did occasionally when a set of documents were especially dim or crowded. Like some others have commented, the scan speed is excellent. But once the documents have been scanned, there is a significant lag while the documents are processed. Most of this has nothing to do with the hardware, but rather the software handling the scanned images. I am scanning almost exclusively into Acrobat X Professional (a definite downgrade from previous versions of Acrobat) with a high degree of OCR involved so the documents are searchable. I have not clocked using any other software. And that brings me to my last point. I installed the software bundled with the scanner, spent 10 minutes looking at it and doing a test scan or two, and have not looked at it since. I do not mind the look and feel issues that others have commented on, but I personally just don't need the software, nor do I find it very useful. I may use the card scanner in the future since it did a better than adequate job of handling VERY odd business cards I tested. Unfortunately, there is no direct synchronization for my email system nor is there any way to build a custom system (in the few minutes I spent). So I would have to export the data and re-import it into a different database. Summary: Hardware great so far. Software probably not so good. I think the "bend" point will be around 25-30,000 scans. If there is any negative change at that point, I will revise my review. ... show more

  • READ THIS TIP VERY IMPORTANT FOR CONTINUED USE OF SCANNER
I have been using this for over a year. I am an attorney and have lots of banker boxes of old client files that I wanted to get rid of. I purchased this because it scans different size papers. Major plus. I have scanned about 50 banker boxes of files, so feel I can give a very good review. This was easy set up. I used the paper port software that came with it and found it easy to operate. I was up and scanning in about 15 minutes. I have put crumpled papers through this, all sorts of odd size papers with no problems. I can load about 25 sheets at a time. After using for a bit you learn quickly how much you can load at a time. There is a pop up box that allows you to set, if it is black and white (using this makes paper fly through the machine) or color (makes the machine slow down) as does setting it for two side coping. You must remove staples, you can leave them in if a single sheet, but if two sheets staples together causes the machine to jam. I just cut the corners off the documents and they feed through fine. HERE IS THE TIP: After scanning about 25 boxes, the machine began misfeeding and taking 5 sheets throug at once or 10 and hanging up. I cleaned the roller, used canned air, nothing worked. Was getting ready to throw the machine across the room, when I decided to order the roller assembly. It runs from 30 to 50 dollars. I didn't think it could be the roller. Well it wasn't, the roller assembly comes with another part that goes on the opposite side of the roller assembly. It is a piece of plastic, kind of like a tongue. When I took out the old "tongue" I could see the difference between the two. The old "tongue" was as thin as paper, where as the new piece was about 1/4 inch thick. This did the trick and the machine was running like new. I have purchased two other sets, so I have them. Strongly recommend buying a couple if you are going to do a lot of scanning. Also when it starts to feed a lot of sheets through, it is time to replace. I wish I would have know this sooner. I scanned about 5 boxes with it malfunctioning and basically having to do each sheet one at a time. This is a great machine for the price. Like I said 50 boxes scanned and probably another 50 to go. It really handles paper in all different shapes and sizes. ... show more

  • Good workhorse scanner
I purchased this scanner after reading the many reviews on this one and other scanners and trying to figure out what would meet my specific needs. I chose this one and have been pleased, although there are a few features lacking or annoyances I have found for my uses. First, my purpose for this scanner: I have a flatbed scanner for big sized items, so this is my workhorse scanner for all the mail, receipts, birthday cards, etc that I get. I'm a packrat regarding anything written, but the move to electronic has much reduced the total load I get - I estimate on average I scan about 200-300 pages per month. Items are of various sizes and I need to be able to scan them all at once, and I want my document to be pdf and searchable afterwards. And of course, I want all this with minimum fuss/stress. So how has it held up? Positives, in rough priority order: -Scanner is fast! Double-sided scanning is awesome, and since I usually only need grayscale, it positively zooms when I scan with grayscale selected. Auto is slower than color it seems, so if I need color I just select it for the whole document. Since I'm not scanning large documents where I want the smallest pdf (and thus would care about a color page here and there but not want to have to scan pieces of the document), I just scan each document clump that I need picking a specific option. I use 300dpi as default and it has been fine. -Scans any shape paper in one stack, including cards and other rigid materials. This is a biggie for me so I can just scan a bunch of all my random stuff at once and have it done. It auto detects the size for the pdf and just keeps trucking through the stack. -I've had the scanner for almost a year now and have had no changes in its functioning/temperment. -Great scan quality - even photos show up well enough for record keeping (haven't tried to print one, but looks good on my computer for mementos). Docs are crisp and clear and word recognition works well. -Setup was easy and software works fine for me since I'm not doing anything fancy. I didn't install PaperPort. -Scanner folds up quite compactly, which is very nice since I only scan once a month and store it most of the time Negatives, in rough priority order: -Jamming or turned pages. Sometimes the scanner pulls in the page with a torque, either causing the doc to crumple up in the rotor mechanism and jamming it, or just scans the thing sideways and stretched and crumpled. This specifically happens most with receipts, which are narrow and long, and happens most when a stack of them are being scanned. I have taken to scanning receipts in batches for each pdf since occassionally when I clear a jam the document gets saved as is without allowing me to adjust it. I don't have adobe pro so this has been my solution. -Double feeds. This has not been nearly as bad as the jamming but it happens enough to be annoying. It also mainly happens with receipts. Thus I have to watch it intently sometimes or doublecheck what got scanned (which I try to do for good habits anyway, but nonetheless it's annoying) in case it doublefed. This is another reason for batches because I typically like things in order, so without adobe pro, I end up just rescanning the whole thing (good thing the scanner is fast!) -Does OCR after each scan and doesn't auto rotate pages. Sometimes I wish I could do character recognition all at once on all the docs and get my scanning out of the way at once, but since the thing scans so fast, I schedule myself to be setting up my next set of docs to scan while it's finishing the OCR, so I don't lose much. Auto-rotate would help for obvious reasons. This could likely be fixed by getting better software. -Length limited to a bit more than 1.5 letter size and don't try to scan a folded page. This only happens rarely when I have a really long receipt, which I then have to cut up, but folded pages is sometimes convenient when I just want the outside, but this totally jams the feeder. All-in-all, I recommend this scanner if your purpose is similar to mine - I am happy with my purchase and would do so again (course I don't have anything to compare with). The scanner itself is quite good, with just a few small gripes, but the software doesn't seem great, so if that's important to you, it may be worth looking for something else or buying software separately. ... show more

  • Little workhorse!
I am the office manager for a primary care physician. We use an electronic medical records system. After getting behind on our scanning of patient records, I decided to do some research and bought the GT-S50 based on other positive online ratings on various sites. It has not disappointed! It is very affordable compared to other multi-page scanners that are three times as expensive. We have quickly caught up with an enormous backlog of scanning, been able to keep HIPAA compliant by not having all the patient information out in paper form, and improved the productivity of our receptionist who now scans this information quickly upon patient check-in. We needed a scanner able to scan both sides of insurance/ID cards for patient files and this does it quickly and efficiently. I was so impressed with this little workhorse, that I bought another one a few months later to begin scanning our billing files into the hard drive and do away with all our file cabinets. We are on our way to being a 100% electronic office to this scanner. Highly recommend if your needs are high-volume scanning. Recommend for small footprint, affordability, speed, variable scanning choices, multiple paper feeder, and my favorite feature: double-sided paper & card scanning all in a 'snap'. ... show more

  • Epson WorkForce vs Fujitsu Scansnap - tried both in same week
I've tried them both (Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S50 and Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500) and the winner is Fujitsu ScanSnap. In short, the reason is bad Epson software and horrendously, awful, incompetent support from Epson, while Fujitsu gets it right in both categories. Here are the details... I've owned 2 ScanSnap scanners. When one of my older ones started acting up (not detecting paper), and when Fujitsu wanted roughly $200 to "repair" it (which probably consisted of putting in a new $10 plastic paper feed detector that a customer can't do themselves), I thought I'd try another brand. So I started out in my quest with the goal of finding something better than ScanSnap. I WANTED to love something else. I searched, read other reviews, and tried the Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S50. The Epson is definitely more solid, although larger, than the ScanSnap. I was pleased with the large feed capacity on the Epson. It also has an LCD screen, where you can create macros (e.g. B&W scan at 300 dpi). So far so good. I was liking it on my first couple one-page tests. But here's where things went wrong... Maybe I'm the only person in the world who wants to quickly scan, enter the folder and file name of my choice, and save to a PDF. Guess what? You can't do that with the Epson. I was shocked. It seems like that would be the most common task a user would want to perform. You have to scan to a pre-set folder (you can define it), using their default filename (something like img001.pdf or the mmddyyyy-hhmmss.pdf) and then rename it using Windows. I thought I must be missing something and I called tech support. More on that below... With the Epson, I tried something I had done for years with the Fujitsu -- automatic color detection. With ScanSnap, including their new S1500, it CAN automatically detect any color on the page and then scan ONLY that page in color while leaving the other pages in B&W. But, with the Epson, there are 2 methods of scanning. With one method, there is NO automatic color detection. With the other method, it will scan all pages in color mode even if only 1 page has color. This causes unnecessary increase in file size. I also noticed that the quality of scan wasn't as good with the Epson as with the ScanSnap. The Epson sometimes showed black edges around the piece of paper. If you print it out, you see the black edges, which looks dumb. And, the image appears fuzzy with the Epson, but more clear with the ScanSnap. Of course, anyone reading this will think I just didn't play with the settings, and it is possible I missed something. But, I tried all kinds of setting combinations and the Epson just didn't produce as good of a scan result as the Fujitsu, and even if you can improve it in a way I didn't try, the average user shouldn't have to do that; Scansnap was simply better. I also had problems with the Epson pulling pages into the scanner at a slight angle. Now, I don't think either scanner is perfect at pulling in pages. I've replaced rollers and assemblies with ScanSnap to avoid the occasional double feed, and I wouldn't say they are perfect by any means. But, when I was hoping Epson would have a better feeding system, I was disappointed to see that it was pulling at an angle -- something I don't get with ScanSnap. Then, the big problem for me was that the Epson software had a bug and would not scan >1 page into a single PDF file. Yeah, yeah, I know there is a setting about making a single PDF file with multiple pages, and I did have it set correctly. But, it didn't work when using their software utility for scanning. If I scanned 10 pages, only the first one showed in the PDF file. I already had Acrobat Professional installed, and I think that caused some driver problem, although it shouldn't have. The rest of my setup is a brand new Windows 7 clean machine. Other people don't seem to have this issue, but the scanner was worthless to me if I couldn't get Epson's help resolving the bug. So I called tech support, and that is when things went from bad to worse. Tech support at Epson: I dealt with a level 1 tech support rep who asked me 101 unrelated questions, only to leave me on hold and never come back to the phone. I called back. The profile the first rep created was missing so they asked me 101 questions again. This person knew nothing about their product. I am not just being critical. He really didn't know how to perform a scan or anything. I had used the product for 2 hours and I knew far more about it than he did. I got bumped to level 2 support. I asked this next person if there was a way to scan, and type in the filename instead of using their default numeric names. He said no. I said "don't you do that when you scan papers at home?" He said he doesn't use a scanner at home. Hmmmm. The guys who are in charge of this product don't USE scanners so, of course, it shouldn't be a surprise to me that the software is so dumb. As for my "can't scan >1 page" issue, I had to get escalated again. My level 3 tech said I needed to hold on while he installed the softare! I said "you don't already have it installed?" He said he doesn't use this model scanner. Really? The level 3 rep hadn't used the software or hardware before? It was frustrating but comical. Level 3 didn't know how to solve the >1 page problem, so they said level 4 would have to help. How many levels were there? I was told level 4 would have to call me back within 24 hours. Well, no one called. 10 days later, I received an email (with my name typed incorrectly). It stated "Recently you requested personal assistance from our on-line support center. Below is a summary of your request and our response. If this issue is not resolved to your satisfaction, you may reopen it within the next 7 days. Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you." What service? They never called. The rest of the email was a generalized summary about how to perform a basic scan. They could care less about my problem of not being able to scan >1 page. So level 4 apparently doesn't know anything more than the basics either, but even worse, they don't care that a customer is still stuck unable to scan multiple pages. On a side note, even the basic email confirmed my belief that you can't type in your own filename when doing a quick scan. The email stated "In the Filename field you can change the Prefix part of the filename only. For example, if you enter Test, the filename will be Test001.pdf." I had no choice but to send back the Epson and buy the ScanSnap S1500. Remember, I was trying NOT to give ScanSnap my money after their high price for a repair. But, I'm glad I did. Their newest software is fantastic. These guys must use their product because the software is very smart. There is a great demo video on YouTube that you should see. (By the way, there is no decent video published by Epson on YouTube.) It certainly lets you name a file anything you want at the time of scanning. These guys even came up with a neat feature that if you highlight a word with a yellow highlighter, it will use OCR and add that word to the metadata saved with the PDF file. If I didn't tell you which scanner hardware was hiding behind each scanner, and I just asked you to rate the software experience with each software package, I'm confident you'd easily say the ScanSnap had the better software. Better yet, it does what you want (naming a file!!!!, only using color for the color pages, etc.) and more. It doesn't have the LCD screen, but the purpose of that (macros) is resolved by a software popup on the Fujitsu ScanSnap anyway. The ScanSnap software asks you what you want to do with the file and even lets you create profiles via software. Now I called Fujitsu because I was stuck with a few things using their software. To my amazement, the first person who answered the phone (without a delay) did NOT ask me 101 questions to create a profile. He just started right in with helping me. He knew the product extremely well, answered my questions immediately, and was a technical person. I was on and off the call with 100% of my questions answered. I even called back another time for a follow-up question and that person was equally good. I should note for people new to scanners that the pages/minute option for any scanner is deceiving unless you use the worst quality settings. If you use better quality settings, or OCR, all scanners take longer per page. But, they are still pretty fast. People, I WANTED to love the Epson but the reality is that Epson doesn't deserve a good rating for this product and they certainly don't deserve your money. Until they put new people in charge of the software development team, and new people in charge of tech support, and revamp those two departments, and actually try using their own product, I will certainly not buy another Epson scanner. ... show more

  • Tedious workflow but good document scan results.
This is a pretty good, fast document scanner, but not suitable for photographs. The software installation is disorganized, and software itself is somewhat clunky, but you can get good document images with a little work. Normally, I do not install any of the software that comes with peripherals except the driver. I tried this strategy with the GT-S50. I installed only the Twain driver, then launched my previously-installed version of Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard for the scanning and OCR. While this works, it turned out the be unsatisfactory. Acrobat is not able to detect the width and height of the scanned documents, and so my scanned images had lots space on the sides and bottom. I was not able to live with that limitation. So I installed some of the other software that came on one of the CDs with the hope that it would do a better job where Acrobat was deficient. I selected Epson Scan and ABBYY Fine Reader, and skipped PaperPort, which I hate from previous experience. This is the new stuff I ended up with on my start menu under All Programs after the installation: ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint -ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint --User's Guide EPSON -EPSON Scan --EPSON Scan Settings --EPSON Scan -GT-S50_S80 User's Guide --GT-S50_S80 User's Guide --Uninstall GT-S50_S80 User's Guide EPSON Scan -WorkForce Pro GT-S50 Online Support -WorkForce Pro GT-S50 Scanner Driver Update Epson Software -Read Me --Copy Utility -Copy Utility -Event Manager ISIS Scanner Drivers -EPSON --GT-S80 and GT-S50 Users Guide -ISIS Network Server -ISIS Network User Guide -ISIS on Citrix Setup Guide What a mess. This is shockingly bad. I had to clean this up manually. ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint Plus does a nice job with the OCR, page size recognition, blank page removal, and export to PDF. The image compression is too aggressive, making very small text difficult to read after it is exported to PDF due to compression artifacts. It does not suffer form the page size limitation that I found when scanning directly with Acrobat. But the workflow is tedious. To scan a document, you launch FineReader, then press the "Scan&Read" button. Then you get a settings dialog from Epson Scan. There is no way to set this up with defaults so that you can skip this dialog entirely. You have to press "Scan" on this dialog before scanning will start. And after scanning has completed, you have to press "Close" on this dialog in order to return to FineReader. Two extra clicks per scan can add up very quickly to a huge annoyance. Additionally, every now and then the software nags you buy a more expensive version. After the scan is complete and you close the Epson Scan dialog, you have to press the Acrobat button on FineReader to export to PDF. This opens the document in Acrobat. The last step is "Save As" in Acrobat so that the PDF file with embedded OCR ends up where you want it. This is more steps than it should be. I found the scanner to be unbelievably fast at up to 200 dpi. At 240 and above, it gets a little slower. The OCR processing is pretty fast on my machine, but it can't quite keep up with the scanner and is the bottleneck. I put a stack photographs though the scanner, but found the results to be unsatisfactory because there were streaks on some of the images. So while I'm keeping the unit for document scanning, it's not everything I had hoped it would be. It's fast, and I like the resulting PDFs of my documents, but the workflow is unnecessarily tedious. I will not be using the GT-S50 to scan photos. Edit 1/16/2011: I found a way for Acrobat to automatically adjust the page size the way I want it, and it gives a better quality image, so I can stop using ABBYY FineReader altogether. ... show more

  • The perfect scanner for the paperless office
I own my own small (3 attorney) law firm and we are going towards a paperless office. We get a lot of paper, and fast, reliable scanning is a must. I have a huge 45 ppm Xerox Workcentre multifunction machine at the office, but I wanted something much smaller and less expensive for my home office that I could use if I worked from there. I looked long and hard for a scanner that I could use to scan documents quickly into PDF format. I wanted something with a relatively small form factor, a high scan speed, and an easy user interface. I did not want a scanner that would jam, even if it occasionally had to scan documents that were folded, bent, etc. This scanner fits the bill perfectly on all counts. It is small, fast, reliable, and makes great scans. It is super easy to learn to use - five minutes, tops, once you get it set up (which took another five minutes, maybe ten with the software installation). My one complaint is that the software user interface could be more streamlined (fewer clicks for a default scan job) and I wish the software didn't automatically add in a document number ("0001," etc.) or a time/date stamp at the end of every file name. There is no way to turn that off (you have to choose one or the other), so if you want to name your files without the numbers, you have to do it manually after creating the file. It's an inconvenience that I hope they fix, because apart from that, this little machine has been absolutely perfect. It is a fantastic value for the money. ... show more

  • Fantastic scanner!
My scanning needs are pretty simple but specific, and this scanner met my needs right out of the box. Setup was a breeze, even though originally I would have liked a written manual instead of only online instructions. After setting it up using the "quick setup" page that came with the scanner, I realized I didn't need anything else! I have double sided paper that I need to scan in amounts of 10-20 and then create a pdf file of the scanned sheets. Previously I was using a single sheet fed scanner, and it would take me easily 20 minutes or so for each file I needed to create with a pass required for each side, and really hard to "multi-task" while scanning. The Epson scanned the double sided pages with one pass in about 30 seconds. It even scans the wrinkly pages my students spill food all over! Scanning used to be the bane of my existence, and now it's almost fun because it is so quick! Even though my needs are pretty simple, this scanner was TOTALLY worth the price just based on the amount of time I will save, and how clean my desk will be without the annoying piles of paper that need to be scanned! ... show more
