  • Long Term Use Review
I have used this printer for 8 years without problem. This review qualifies as a review since long term use is the only true measure. This review is for the Stylus Photo 1400. Here is what you need to know. This printer is NOT the printer you want if you desire quick, easy wireless or network printing. This can be accomplished with accessories but it is troublesome and there are No Peer to Peer options. (Peer to Peer means directly printing wirelessly without any WiFi base station or wireless router) Best use for this printer is direct USB cable connection. Before you consider the purchase of this discontinued printer, consider your requirements first. The updated whiz bang gadget laden replacement for this printer that includes Peer to Peer wireless printing is the Epson P600 and is well worth considering all aspects involved. However.... if you wish a well designed simple workhorse wide format printer, this is a good choice. (NOTE: Original purchase price for this printer was $239.00) I use Macintosh computers only. (which means I also run Windows) My review is based upon PPC and Intel Macintosh use. I do not use the CD printer portion of this printer because I have another printer that takes care of that task. My primary use for this printer is Digital Scrapbooking and Greeting Cards. The default size for digital scrapbooking is 12X12. I have printed hundreds of 12X12 pages and greeting cards flawlessly.... HOWEVER!!!! The printer itself is a proven design and is very reliable HOWEVER.... the printer software drivers are not what you may call "perfected". I have used this printer under OSX 10.4 to 10.10. From OSX 10.4 to 10.5 you must install the drivers from the included CD (not recommended) or download the latest from Epson. (recommended) OSX 10.6 drivers can be installed from download OR directly from Apple software update. OSX 10.7 and above is Apple software update ONLY. One may wonder.... what is the difference in these drivers and do they have any effect? The answer is, they are different and they do have an effect which can be quite profound. The "profound" effect is directly related to Paper Thickness. This printer and the entire Epson 1400 series (including the 1430) have 2 paths for paper. 1. Regular paper which includes most standard photo paper. 2. Thick paper and envelopes which includes some photo papers. What happens is simply this,.... if the wrong paper thickness is selected, the print will have banding and some other aberrations. Problem is.... the Apple supplied driver does and does not allow direct control over paper thickness. ******** UPDATED CORRECTION 1. Print something. 2. Click on the Epson Stylus Photo 1400 box at the top and choose the up dawn arrows. 3. Choose Printers & Scanners Preferences. (this opens System Preferences) 4. If more than one printer driver, choose Epson Stylus Photo 1400. 5. In the window choose Options & Supplies. 6. In the next window choose Options. Here you will find the button that chooses plain paper or thick paper & envelopes. (on or off) ******** Specifically, I used Apple's driver (OSX 10.6 to 10.10) with this printer and regardless of my paper thickness setting being set to "normal", my 12X12 photo prints are automatically sent through the thick paper path and this cannot be controlled / defeated. FORTUNATELY.... this model of the 1400 series does not cause or create any print problems resulting from this uncontrollable setting. UNFORTUNATELY.... the subsequent 1400 printer series DO have serious problems with this uncontrollable setting. ******** (see correction above) (I tested results with alternate paper thickness settings and the wrong setting creates a printed image problem 99% of the time, typically "banding") The quirks do not end there. Using the supplied Epson drivers introduces a minor annoyance, BUT.... also provides complete control over paper thickness and does Not automatically route 12X12 prints through the thick paper path. (OSX 10.4 to OSX 10.6 only) The annoyance is.... the Epson printer driver will not automatically quit when the printing task is finished. You must manually quit the print driver using Epson's drivers whereas Apple's drivers automatically quit at end of task. The complaints about the 1400 series pinter problems (using Macintosh) do not apply to this specific (discontinued) model. Complaints about ink use and cartridges not being entirely empty are generated by those who do not realize the problems with ALL InkJet printers. ALL Inkjet printers must not run their tubes dry or the ink itself will clog the tubes. There will always be some ink left in the cartridge and is required for maintaining proper operation. (keeping the tubes unclogged) COST ????.... let's not fool ourselves OK? Your printer is a very sophisticated electromechanical device and is very expensive to design and produce. IF.... you were charged full price for your printer, you would be paying thousands for every printer you ever bought. The printer manufacturer makes your printer affordable and makes "virtually" ALL profit from ink sales. Whether or not the actual cost and profit margin that the consumer is subjected to is Moral, Just or even Legal is not the topic of this review. (that would be an opinion versus a review.... no doubt my "opinion" is the same as yours) Bottom line: A very well designed printer that accurately prints what I see on my monitor with a very acceptable quality and has withstood the test of time. Excellent for 12X12 digital scrapbooking and greeting cards without need for ICC profile installation. I have printed perhaps thousands of BW and Color plain paper documents as well but it is not as fast as the Epson Artisan series for documents or 4X6 photo prints. No wonder it was discontinued.... it lasts too long. PS The best Epson printer for 4X6 prints are the Artisan series. (I use an Artisan 835 for my 4X6 prints, but beware, the Artisan series prints are much darker than what you see on your monitor and you should use the Artisan ICC profile for accuracy) ... show more

  • Superb Print Quality Right Out of the Box
Well, I just installed this big monster and printed my first picture. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the print. The detail, clarity and color accuracy were all way beyond anything I've printed, or had printed at a store. No printer I've had previously, including previous Epson, Lexmark and Canon models, comes close to the beautiful results I have in my hand right now. I know that other reviewers have noted quality problems in the long run, and I reserve the right to edit this review at a later date, but right now I'm just in awe of this thing. Oh, and I made no adjustments of any kind to the printer before I made my first picture. I simply selected the highest print quality and "Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper" as the source, and that was it. The colors were an exact match of the picture on my calibrated monitor. Now, if this thing just keeps working, I'll be a happy camper for a long time. Edit: Over one year into ownership now, and still no problems whatsoever. No ink clogs or paper feeding errors. It gulps down ink, and the ink isn't cheap, but the stunning prints are worth it. I've used numerous papers, including Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and Epson Velvet Fine Art, and the pictures come out perfectly using just the provided profile for "Epson Premium Presentation Paper Matte". I can't tell you the feeling when a client looks at their print for the first time and their breath catches in their throat. The cost of the ink, though, has meant that I only use this printer for paying customers or special prints. For everyday stuff, I still use my old Canon IP6220. Still, when I need an awesome print, this is my baby. ... show more

  • Hang On A Second Before You Buy.....
I bought this printer to replace an Espon 1270 that I recently lost when my house went up in flames. This seemed to be the logical choice. Same basic functions. Same basic cost. Nope, not even close. When it arrived it was 50% bigger in size (almost 2ft wide) and uses 6 print cartridges instead of 2. The 3 things I really can't stand is that it feeds multiple sheets of paper no matter what I do. The online help says load fewer sheets, so as long as there is only ONE sheet in the feeder, it works fine. The second thing that really fries my schnitzel, is that I tried User Support 2 weeks ago and they still haven't responded. The third, is that when they say Window XP or Vista, that's exactly what they mean. The printer can't be used by any older software. My fault for not reading closer, but not all of my computers can run XP. So Epson, what happened? You used to make a great product. Talk to me, you are about to lose a loyal customer FOREVER. If I would have bought a $49 printer (any brand) I would have been much happier. Just a quick update. Epson finally got back to me and their solution is for me to send them my NEW printer and they will kindly send me a refurbished one. For real. Also, since I'm still able to print one sheet at a time the ink has finally run out after a hundred or so printed 8-1/2 x 11 sheets. Big surprise here too, the replacement cartidges cost $126 for the set at Office Depot. So, my advice is to buy ANY other printer that you feel will suit your needs. Epson has failed big time with this one, all the way around. ... show more

  • Great Printer, BUT...
I wish I had known that at some point, you get a message that the ink pads need replacing. Replacement costs as much as a new printer. If I had known, I would not have purchased it, nor used it for everyday printing. When it worked, it was great.

  • Still Working Great
I've had this printer for over a year now, and it's still working great. Previous Epson's have gone south on me with clogged nozzles that can't be cleared, using dry inks--before a year is even up, but this Stylus 1400, with the Claria inks, hasn't given me any trouble at all. I might go a month or two without printing, but this printer doesn't stop because of that. I haven't even needed to clear the nozzles. I've printed close to a hundred full color full coverage CD labels, and am still using the color ink cartridges that came with the printer. I use the printer mainly to print music, which often requires larger format. The black and white dedicated cartridge allows for true black and white printing using only the B&W cartridge (there is a setting in the print controls that provides for this). Printing music requires very high definition, and this printer delivers, even fairing pretty well on plain paper or velum. I just installed my 1st B&W replacement cartridge, with over 100 pages of music printed. Again, no problem with clogged nozzels. I do not print photos, and won't recommend one way or the other on that. I print my CD labels on high gloss, which look terrific. On matte, the colors are not nearly so good and the red is quite off. Perhaps this could be corrected by color settings if I knew how, but I don't have the need. The inks are expensive, though the color 5 pack is under $60 at Amazon now. For a low volume user like me, ink cost has not turned into an issue as I find the printer to be more reasonable with the inks than previous Epsons. I haven't had to waste any ink clearing the nozzees, and maybe that's the difference. The printer delivers big time on wide format, high definition printing for my uses: fine detail B&W music printing, and high gloss color CD labels. ... show more

  • Great Printer but wildly expensive ink.
After my Epson 1280 finally failed after many, many years I decided to upgrade to the 1400. Amazon has the cheapest price I could find. Free Delivery took only 24 hours. The printer sets up very quickly, though with Snow Leopard I had to download the newest Drivers rather than using the CD supplied. Photoshop Elements also comes free. There was some setup confusion with the USB outlet on the front. Epson also does not supply the special USB printer cable, as they have in the past. There should at least be some warning of this, at least from Amazon. There should be a list of at least the minimum things you need to set it up. I was able to use the old cable I had, otherwise it might have taken another day or so to find one.... So far the photographic prints and oversized CAD drawings are great from it. Almost no corrections necessary from the 1280, just some minor setup changes with the newer software... I have heard problems with ink usage etc. but I think that is just people not being used to this kind of printing. I am also hoping that the way the ink is split up in the 1400, that I only use what I need, not just have to replace the entire color cartridge every time any of the 3 colors empties.... I have used cartridges from other third parties before on the 1280. They seem fine. Just look for cartridges that have great references from other professional users. UPDATE April 2013- Still happy with the printer but $120 for a full set of 6 small ink cartridges from Epson is insane. In the end I just use third party inks with great feedback from other users, for $10 a set.... Epson- charging crazy prices for your inks just drives people away from both them, and in the end, even your printers. S. ... show more

  • Great printer for everything
I've only had this printer for about a month, but so far it has lived up to my expectations with Epson. I've owned a half dozen Epson printers in the past and currently own 3. I was looking for a printer to make 11x14 to 12x18 prints and this one was priced right. So far the prints have been superior and the printer easy to set up and use. My only complaints are: 1) It uses a great deal of inks, especially the light cyan, light magenta, and yellow. The specs said it was easy on inks, but I'm not finding that true. 2) The inks are expensive (as usual) but I can only get them from Epson store. Epson does have specials and when I get 10% off and free shipping, I usually take advantage of it. All in all I would recomend this printer to anyone needing a larger format without the larger price tag. I've tried HP and Canon and find them good printers, but I have found the Epson line of printers superior. ... show more

  • Good printer, but may be tarnished...
I just bought this printer about a week ago, and have not had any trouble with the quality. When I was in college, and at my old work, I used other (higher quality) Epsons, and this one prints look just as good and with the price as cheap as it is, you can't go wrong. I got some quotes from commercial printers who would print on an Epson for $30 a print! I would have spent as much get portfolio pieces as I would have from just buying this printer. Ridiculous. That said, I've come across what seems to be a unique problem. Everything that I've printed so far as come out a bit larger than it should. For example, after I cut out a cd booklet I printed with crop marks, which should being 4.75", it came out 1/8" larger. Other things that should have been 11" x 14" came out about a quarter inch larger. I just wrote Epson asking about this problem, so I'll have to update once they respond. While trying to come across others who might have had this problem, I stumbled back upon Amazon, so I thought I might as well write one of these. **Update** So there's a setting in the printer's dialogue box (outside of the program's print menu), called Expansion. For some reason the default is on "Max," which means that it distorts the print by enlarging it, so that you can have a bleed. Now I see how Epson thinks of the people it is marketing this printer to: idiots. ... show more
