I printed about 4,000 pages a month. This printer advertises a duty cycle of 4500/5000 pages a month. Almost at the outset printer was jamming, docs got stuck spooling in limbo (with a direct usb cable connection), and giving me error messages that said that there was no paper in the tray. Also, the printer was loud and slow. I called Epson customer service (since I was within the 1st year of warranty). I called twice. First time I spent 1.5 hours troubleshooting and was told I would get a call back. Weeks went by and nothing. Second time I was on the phone about 1-1.5 hours until finally they agreed to send me a printer and take this one back. Unfortunately they sent me a refurbished printer. The refurbished printer had me wishing I had my first printer back - it was screeching (loudly) every time it printed, from the get-go. This noise went on for a while and then the printer stopped working altogether. Luckily I had purchased Asurion, who by that time had taken over the warranty. Their claims process was prompt and easy, but but the time I will have received the new printer I will be 3 weeks without a printer. Epson scanners are good, but this printer was a headache throughout. DO NOT BUY. I hope the repair actually makes a difference, but I seriously doubt it. ... show more

This printer cost a bit more than some inkjets, but it is worth the price. Two years after buying it, I just now replaced the ink it came with. A big bottle, that will likely last another 2 years, only cost me $17. After paying $50 every few months for ink cartridges in the past, this is amazing. The print has been excellent. I haven't had to do a print cleaning or alignment to the best of my memory since I got it. I think it goes through self maintenance once or twice a day, because it occasionally makes a noise like it. It also handles faxes well without a dedicated line. Before this I got this I bought an HP laser all in one, which prints great but did not do well on picking up the fax signals. So it is now a back-up wireless printer when my wife or I have a lot to print. Before that I had another Epson, an older model, that handled the fax/answering machine switch well, so I bought this, and it has done well. There have probably been a few times it did not pick up when it should have, but they are in a small minority. Epson seems to be the only one that has got the hand-off between fax and phone working well. For an all in one office machine it is great. I would definitely recommend it. ... show more

    • A truly wonderful printer with one noteworthy flaw

In my work, I regularly need to produce multiple double-sided black and white printouts of lengthy PDF text documents (a single job can easily run 2500 copies). As I am reimbursed at a flat per-page rate for the printouts I make, my goal has been to find a B&W full duplex printer that prints quality copies at the lowest possible per-page cost. The ET-M1170 fills the bill in every way but one: for some reason, it's paper pick-up rollers do a poor job with double-sided printing, which causes frequent stoppages, but not jams. Epson is well aware of the problem and recommends frequently cleaning the pick-up rollers and not putting too much paper (no more than 1/2" I'd say) in the paper tray while double-sided printing, which helps, but not enough. In contrast, my cheap full duplex B&W laser printer, a Lexmark B2236dw, does flawless double-sided printing with a slightly sharper print quality but at a much higher per-page cost. So, if you want perfectly acceptable text print quality at a very low per-page cost, the ET-M1170 is absolutely wonderful. If you do a lot of double-sided printing, however, it's something of a pain, which is a real shame. ... show more

    • Fantastic Performance Printer

I Picked up 3 of these to handle packing slip printing while I pumped out massive amounts of thermal labels with an Industrial thermal label printer. The printers are FAST. And they can be hooked to the network which makes them a lot more usable as far as accessing settings and transferring the data. It's a little difficult to get familiar with these printers when there's a paper jam but once you find how easy it is to pull the back out and rip out the paper, it's a cakejob. What impresses me the most about these printers is it draws the next sheet while it's still printing the current page. Absolutely fantastic for the fast print jobs I needed. Also, the ecotank/supertank Epson has is the way to go. I'm so tired of using a CIS with their printers. Now that they're built in, it's clean and easy to handle. Epson makes these special bottles for filling ink, in an attempt to force you to buy their own ink they make it look impossible to unscrew the bottle top, but you can and then fill your own cheaper ink. Just make sure to use quality ink if you deviate from Epson's. Don't just put any ink in or you'll clog your heads. The only drawback worth stating is it does seem like it pumps through ink a lot faster than some of their cheaper printers and the old workforce printers. It could just be that I'm able to slam through packing slips faster and I'm getting a lot more done but I have had to fill the printers a few times already. No biggie though. The printer itself is fine. Works well, no issues. If you're interested in this product to get the free unlimited ink for 2 years, DO NOT BUY. The process is extremely difficult, you have to send in several documents and also the empty ink bottle. Each time I sent it in, they claimed something was missing. It's such a pain to get the rebate. This last time they claimed the ink bottle was missing which is impossible because all the necessary documents were sent in with the bottle. You have to pay for shipping to send in the ink bottle, so you're already out $5 to get a $17 rebate. ... show more
