  • Reliable Choice
I own 4 of these on two different properties and continue to find them the most reliable. I've never had one fail. Some are 15 years old now. As of this writing, it still shows the White Rodgers brand (vs the now parent Emerson), so hopefully the quality won't suffer. The difficulty with the cheaper brands is often they will fail after a few years, and failure modes can be costly...like running the furnace when it shouldn't. Not worth saving a few bucks. Not to mention you'll invest a couple hours on installation and programming. What you will like: * Simple Run and Hold modes. When you're home, just press the Run button. When you are away, just press the Hold button and set your away temperature. * Batteries last a long time. * Supports 2 wire heater only connection, with just power (R) and furnace (W). * Temperature reading is accurate. * Display is easy to read and not overly complicated with junk. What you won't like: * Programming is tedious. I only need one day and and one night setting, with same settings every day of the week. But you have to program 4 periods per day, three separate times (M-F, Sat, Sun)...tedious. Program it before you mount it, as you will spend a lot of time reading instructions and pressing buttons. * There is no separate wall mount bracket, unlike other thermostats. The main unit is screwed into the wall. I think this makes installation more troublesome. Your screwdriver will be very close to touching the circuit board. Depending on your mounting location, that can make it awkward to reprogram. ... show more

  • Mixed experience
The third thermostat just delivered works great and was easy to install once you know your wiring. We returned the first one ordered because the repairman found a problem with the furnace itself. Power surge on Christmas Day finished off the old thermostat. Reordered same product but this one came without a box or batteries. Installed it anyway with our own batteries. It lite up but furnace did not kick on. Had service man return. Diagnosis was a faulty thermostat. Got prompt credit from Amazon and ordered a third one. Arrived today, installed and working fine! ... show more

  • Working fine after searching for fixes, manual needs modification
We had a 21 year old White-Rodgers thermostat that still worked but the display recently quit displaying all portions of numbers, making it a little difficult to figure out what temperature it was set on and to adjust, etc. so I decided to replace it with another White-Rodgers thermostat, figuring it would be more likely to have the same wire codes, etc. That seemed to be the case. First problem I ran into is not sure where to install my hot wire on the RH terminal since the jumper wire was already in that hole. My old thermostat had screwheads to hold down wires so it was easy enough to put two wires in the same spot. I thought for a while that maybe my hot wire was supposed to go on the opposite side of the screw but I couldn't seen any connections in the narrow slot on that side. I watched a YouTube video and saw that the guy there had installed the hot wire into the same hole as the jumper wire. After straightening it out well, I saw I was able to get my hot wire in the hole after loosening the screw enough. No biggie, but this should be mentioned in the manual. Most importantly, however, was that after properly connecting everything, my heater would run constantly when switched into heat mode and the AC would run constantly when set in the cool mode even though the ambient temperature was below or above the set temperature. Reading through the manual it indicated in the troubleshooting section to make sure the fan was set onto auto, not on. Check. It then said to make sure that no wires were shorted. Check. It also said that the thermostat might be shorted and that if the problem persisted, to call a professional. That was unacceptable, the wiring was not the problem and if the thermostat was faulty, it was getting sent back for a return or replacement. I looked for a technical support number in the manual and called it. The number rang once and then stopped. No message, etc., nothing. Tried again just in case, same result. I searched online through various search results and didn't find anything helpful so I checked Emerson's site and read the manual for the P210 thermostat since the thermostat I bought wasn't listed for some reason and this seemed similar. Finally some help! In the troubleshooting section of that manual it said for the problem I encountered (as well as some others) to try and reset the thermostat. The manual that comes with the thermostat I bought only mentions the reset operation at the top of the troubleshooting section in the event of a voltage spike and the screen blanking out or the thermostat function erratically. My thermostat did not have a blanked out screen and was not functioning erratically, it was constantly running in heat or cool mode, depending on which I had it switched to. I went ahead and tried resetting my thermostat (hitting up, down, and time buttons simultaneously) and this took care of the problem. I had to set the time and programs again and tested it and it now functions fine. I was prepared to send this thermostat back but the P210 manual saved the day. The manual for this thermostat should be modified to included clarity on installing the hot wire and, most importantly, change the troubleshooting section to read the same as the P210 thermostat. ... show more

  • This thermostat is Smarter than your average honeywell thermostat
Ok, first the negative: the unit is larger than most thermostats. So if you have a thermostat box in the wall it doest catch a standard thermostat box. That being said, the thermostat will stay in place with just one screw. Just tighten it and you will be fine. It comes with dry wall anchor and screw if you want to put in the second screw in the wall. Next the positive, there is a reason why this unit is larger. It is smarter than your average thermostat. It has two basic settings, Hold or Run. Hold means it will Hold that one temperature your set. Run means it will run the program you set which will change 4 times a day to the temperature you want. My Carrier HVAC system is simple it has 4 wires. You need to make sure you understand the reason for each wire. For example by wires were RED, WHITE, GREEN, and BLUE. But my BLUE wire was for the fan. So you need to know that the standard fan uses a YELLOW wire. This was the case for my wiring. Just note in a standard HVAC system you will have a power wire (RED), Air Handler (GREEN) a Heater wire (WHITE) and a AC wire (YELLOW). Take a snapshot of your current thermostat before you start to unscrew them from the old thermostat. Some units have more wires for furnaces and heat pumps. So understand what each wire does and it is easy to install. My HVAC system runs smoother. It will do everything possible to stay at the temperature you set. My old unit (honeywell) kept things within a few degrees. But this Emerson is great on older units and makes your unit run smoother. I am surprised it works so well. ... show more

  • Works as advertised
The description said it would take 30 minutes to install. I chose to have an electrician do it and it took him at least that long. Works as expected.
