  • Worked great, worth its cost
Size: Coiled
Love it, works fantastic. We purchased this little burner to take on vacation with us; yes, we're 'ghetto' and like to heat things up in our room not using the microwave if possible. Now, we try not to do anything that would be smelly for neighbors or anything, so we just used it for heating up eggs for breakfast, and reheating some leftovers like fried fish which turn out a million types better pan frying than just tossing in a microwave. This little burner easily paid for itself while we did a 10-day road trip from CA to CO, it worked great. It heats up very quickly, gets very very hot (we never used it on high, even at medium high it got so hot the pam oil spray pushed past its smoke point and turned black), and surprisingly cooled down really quickly as well, within 10 minutes (probably more like 5) the thing was cold to the touch. The only issue with this little burner would be the very short cord (for safety reasons I'm sure, its only like 2 feet), and the burner would sometimes rotate making it somewhat slanted to cook on. At this price-point though, I'm certainly not complaining, it worked like a champ, and certainly was nice to have some healthier meals cooked with veggies on the road rather than always having fast food or even restaurant food where they over-salt everything and vegetables are few and far between. ... show more

  • Great single burner for cheap
Size: Coiled
This single burner coil hot plate is nice! We use this on a 1000w generator at our cabin up north and it works great! It nice and small, doesn't take up much space, and uses only 750w. The only complaint I have is the coil isn't really all that secure. They claim its for easy clean up, and it is, but make sure its laying flat before you put a pot on it. I may end up securing it to the bottom permanently, not sure yet. I haven't got to do a ton of cooking with it yet but it's definitely worth it at this price point. ... show more

  • Excellent cooking
Size: Coiled
I love this hot plate for my assisted living facility with my 2 Revere Ware pans and a Corning ware pan. However, it gave out after 4 mos. of nearly daily use. I reviewed all other hot pots and hot plates and decided to buy it again. Maybe this one will last longer--in any case it is so reasonably priced I don't mind the short life. $3 a month is not bad. Maybe when this one goes I will re-consider a different brand. The box says it has a 1 year warranty but the website listed does not come up and I could get a new one in a day, thankfully. As for use, it has hi med low settings and heats up quickly, At med setting it only take about 12 min to cook my frozen vegs. It heats to red, then cuts off, and then comes back on after a bit. It is easy to wipe pan underneath the coils and 1000w. is perfect. I think somewhere it says 700 w. on site? but it is definitely 1000 w. If you have good 1 qt. pans, this hot plate is a terrific buy--just not certain how long it will last. One person said 2 years. ... show more

  • Coil is too unstable
Size: Coiled
If you're looking for the cheapest imaginable burner for a small project, this is a decent choice. It's cheap, it plugs in, it heats up. Did I mention it's cheap? But at this price, don't expect something particularly well made. The burner is a bit floppy and whenever I move the thing I keep worrying it will fall out. Plus my small pot never sits very sturdily on the coils, and the day may come when I spill hot wax everywhere. But handled carefully, it works well for intermittent, short-term use. 2023 UPDATE - My former review was four stars, but I am lowering it to three. I would lower it even further, but this thing has managed to stay more or less functional all these years, so I guess I have to grudgingly give it three. I pretty much only use it for melting wax (for making mushroom logs or coating plastic foundation in beehive frames), and the instability of the coil makes it *very* annoying to use for this purpose. I constantly have to adjust the pan and/or the burner coil to try to keep the pan level, and the when I used it the other day, a misalignment caused a whole pan of melted wax to tumble off and spill, and that's when I decided to finally scrap this thing and find something new. It's also not great for wax because the temperature dial is NOT well marked, and it's really hard to find a sweet spot where the wax stays liquid but doesn't overheat. Obviously my use case is very specific, so this thing might work well for more conventional uses -- but I imagine that tipping issue from the loose coil would be annoying under any circumstances. LOL - I just reread my original review, where I said "the day may come when I spill hot wax everywhere." No kidding! ... show more

  • I doubt this is 750 watts (Black model ESB-300X)
Size: Coiled
**This review is for the Black model ESB-300X, which is listed as 750 watts. The white model was not available when I purchased this, and is apparently listed as 1000 watts. This review is NOT for the white one, which was added later.*** I bought this to replace another older unit that is practically identical in every way, but is sold by a different company (toastmaster) and has a different knob. This new unit is clearly inferior & doesn't suit my needs at all. Allow me to explain why. I can my own food with a pressure cooker. When canning meats (in this case, homemade beef stew) you need to be extra sure that sterilization temps are being reached. I cook/can mine at 14-15 psi for 50-60 minutes. While my old unit will hold steady at 15 psi on high, this unit will barely make 5 psi & then drop down to no pressure at all, unnecessarily repeating the cycle. Both units are rated at 750 watts. I am assuming that the different knob, which also acts as a voltage/wattage regulator, is preventing the unit from reaching its full potential. This is closer to a 500 watt unit, which means it could take you 30 minutes just to boil water. I am unsatisfied, as this unit is almost worthless to me at these temps. My only consolation is that it didn't cost very much, but I do not recommend anyone purchase this unit unless you are just melting wax or something, but even then it would be worth your time to find a burner that could actually boil water in less than 10 minutes. ... show more
