  • Great value, great fun

Freesky E Bike Review First Impression: Extremely well packaged, components and finish look high quality. Comes with a tool kit. Assembly: Fairly straight forward. Connect the handlebars, guidelines make it easy to center. Attach the front wheel and the headlight. The headlight was a newer model with a different attachment and the bolt was missing. I was able to use a bolt I had, and install was easy even they do have an updated video on their website. I didn’t forget to pump up the tires. Range is 24 to 30, I went with 26 for a softer ride. The front suspension has adjustments for how hard and how deep the shock works, but the default settings were fine for me. Charging: First charge took about four hours. Battery can be charged in the bike or outside. Only takes a few seconds to remove/install. An external additional battery is available. The battery has a lock to prevent theft. First Ride: I took a ride with the battery out and it was not unlike riding any other mountain bike. It has seven gears and they shifted smoothly, and I used them all. First E Ride: Rode up the steepest longest hill without any issue. Set the assist to level one and was able to pedal up without any difficulty. Tried riding over a few bumps and curbs and the front suspension absorbed them perfectly. Riding around the yard on grass, gravel and hills was a blast. There were a few times when I needed to use the throttle to get up a hill and there were times where I just hit the throttle for the sheer fun of it. I did find I used the gears less and stayed in 3 and 4 most of the time. I think that the impulse is to just hit the throttle a bit rather than drop a gear. Fun Factor: I can’t put into words just how much fun it is. Anytime you want to accelerate, just a tap on the throttle gets you moving quickly. The tires are massive and handle gravel and rocks with ease and comfort. Controls: Gears are on the right handle bar and work like any other bicycle. Throttle is by the left thumb. There are three buttons for electronics. The center button is pressed and held to power on/off. The “+” button is pressed to increase assistance and held to power on/off the headlight. The “-“ button is pressed to decrease assistance and held to activate cruise control. If you press and hold the “+” and “-“ buttons, you enter the programming mode and can remove speed limits and set other options. Comfort: The height, stability, and seat were all comfortable. The ride quality is excellent. Controls are easy to operate. There is a slight whine from the electric motor, but it won’t bother anyone. Other Stuff: The LED headlight is nice and bright, but the off-road cage blocks a lot of it. It bounces while riding but I don’t think that’s different than any other set up. Assistance Levels: I expect that when on flat paved surfaces like the rail trail, I would turn off any assistance and just ride normally. On the street, in hilly areas, on unpaved areas, I would expect to use one of the assistance levels based on your ability. For real off-road riding, you would probably use the full electric mode and ride it more like a dirt bike. Upgrades: It did not come with a bottle cage, so that’s an easy, no brainer option. The pedals are OK, but the pegs are not tall enough for any rough terrain, so I upgraded those. I ordered a frame bag with a phone holder. I decided to get a left side view mirror to see coming cars when I am on the street. Legality: In NYS, there are no licenses or registration required as of now. Some trails do not allow “motorized vehicles” so if you leave the factory speed limits in place, it is only a class one electric bike and not a motorized vehicle. ... show more

  • Good value and fun to ride!

I purchased this item in Jan 2023. In the spirit of pay it forward here goes.. Assembly was straightforward. If you can manage to put together Ikea furniture, you can assemble this bike. 20mph vs 30+ mph and throttle vs PAS: As delivered, the throttle max is 20mph. To go faster (e.g. 30+ mph) you need to "peddle" - in quotes, because by peddle you need to just rotate the crankshaft with your legs/feet. You will then be able to go beyond 20mph. You also need to have the Peddle Assist (PAS) set to 5. If you wan't to be able to use the throttle go above 20mph, then you need to purchase the "unlocked controller" that costs $150. I purchased the "unlocked controller" - make sure you order the correct controller for your model. In my case it was the "Himalaya." I ordered this directly from freeskycycle.com. From China to my doorstep in CA took about 10 days. It was delivered to my doorstep by US postal service and there was good package tracking. Instalation was pretty easy, there is a video on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhKrd3xCrE0 that shows how to install it. You will need a Torx head T25 to remove two screws that attach the battery connection assembly. I had a T25 "screwdriver" (e.g. picture your typical screwdriver) - but with this it was difficult to get enough torque to remove the screws and it felt like if I forced it I could strip the screws. Luckily I also had T25 "bit" that I inserted into a small ratchet handle that I had. With this, removing the two screws was easy. Took me about 20 minutes to install the "unlocked controller." From there my bike powered up just fine. Display looked normal. HOWEVER, the throttle was basically non-functional. Eventually, I downloaded the user manual from the link that is in the product description here on Amazon (https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/B1cb2tOq96L.pdf ). I then set P08 to a higher value than the 0 it was set at (I set it to 35) and then then I was able to accelerate to over 20 mph using just the throttle. However, I did notice that the new controller seems to have a noticeable lag (approx 1 second) before power kicks in from a stop. I've reached out to customer service to see if there are any other adjustments I could make to reduce the lag. At this point, I have mixed feelings as to whether it is worth the $150 for the unlocked controller. Rim "Crack" issue: I was about to go for a ride, when I noticed what looked like a "crack" in my rear rim. My first thought was that the rim was failing and it was unsafe to ride. I contacted customer service, sent them some images, and they explained it was "okay, and safe to ride." I did some internet research and spoke to a local bike shop. Bottom line is that bicycle rims are joined together in one of three ways - a pin, welded, or a ring that goes around the circumference of the rim. This bike appear to use pins. Ideally, wiith top quality the rim joint with pins should align "perfectly" and with paint over it , should be hardly noticeable. The strength of the rim comes from the spokes. Bottom line, the "crack" that I saw is unfortunate (perhaps indicating a slip up in quality of manufacturing) but not really a safety problem. I think there are a few reviews mentioning this issue. Customer support: Very good. I basically have a running thread with their support and they are responsive and helpful. Bottom line: The bike is very enjoyable to ride and for the price I feel it is a good value. My "rim crack" issue at the end of the day is just a cosmetic issue. The "unlocked controller" issues would only apply if you really need to be able to go over 20mph using only the throttle - for me, I basically have too much time to waste and created a project for myself. Like I said, if I had to do it over again, I might just live with having to rotate the peddles when I want to go over 20mph. Honestly, at 30+ mph, I feel like I'm going too fast for my age ! ... show more

  • Worth it! Especially off road riding.

If you’re on the fence with this company or this particular e-bike hopefully this will make up your mind. I am 100% happy with the Freesky Himalaya. I have put over 30 miles on the bike, half of which were a mix of asphalt and light trails, and the other half being purely off road on what some would consider ATV/dirt bike trails. My buddy and I each bought one to use for public land hunting in North Georgia for whitetail and duck hunting. Law requires e-bikes be 750 watts or less to use on WMA. Last weekend we took them to the area to scout and they did not disappoint at all. I am 200+ pounds and my buddy is 260+ pounds. We each had bags, gun racks and extra gear loaded on the bike. They had plenty power to get us up hills with just electric throttle and for the steeper hills we just peddled assist a little bit to help get over the top and it was super easy. It’s usually a 30+ minute walk to our hunting area but these bikes cut that down to a little over 11 minutes. I knew these bikes would beat walking, but they did more than we expected. We rode about 6-7 miles round trip in all kinds of terrain, clay hard pack, soft grass, light mud, and rocks. The batteries were great, only lost 1 bar and that was because we were riding up decently steep hills on throttle only, not much pedal assist. The front suspension was comfortable once you get the correct preload and compression settings dialed in for your weight. Installation was easy, front wheel, handle bars, seat, and pedals then you’re ready to ride. There’s not many reviews of these as far as pure off road riding which was why we were undecided on this bike but it sure beats $3500+ for a the other hunting oriented e bikes on the market. I would 100% recommend these to anybody looking for an on or off road e bike. ... show more
