  • Does the job well
Color: Stainless Steel
This is my second big outdoor kitchen build-out. Originally I wasn't going to get another icemaker this time around, but I found that I missed it too much. My previous outdoor icemaker was a great KitchenAid. Really nice (and pretty pricey). I found this one on Amazon and read the reviews. Overall positive so took a chance. Glad that a I did. Hookup was easy and worked right away. This, despite the fact that my deck in California is in the direct sun and this unit is on the outer edge (in the sun all day where temps can be well over 100 degrees on the deck). I was worried about the high temps but, so far, no problem. Manual says operating temps up to 100 degrees. I say it can do more! Nice stainless enclosure as well. As others have noted: the ice comes off in small sheets vs. cubes. Buy a metal ice scoop to help break them up. The only (small) issue is: a sheet lying on a tray is what causes the maker to think it is 'full'. If you break the ice up, you can easily get twice as much ice in the hopper. So if you have a big party coming, break up the ice a few hours early and let the machine keep rolling. Overall a great buy and glad I did it! Pro tip: when you are buying fittings to connect it to an outdoor water outlet, make sure they are human-safe (meaning they have no lead in the copper). No use poisoning yourself when you are enjoying all that great ice! ... show more

  • Don't be fooled by old reviews
Color: Stainless Steel
I typically don't spend this kind of money on an item bought online. I'm one of those people who needs to see and feel what I'm buying before I buy it. Nonetheless, because my outdoor kitchen was nearing completion and the local grill shops didn't have this model (theirs were $500 more), I bought it anyway. Yes, I read the reviews. But from what I gathered, something was not right around 2016 since that's when most of the negative reviews happened. That said, it arrived with some minor damage to the top, back corner. I decided to not send it back since the damage wouldn't be visible once installed. This I attributed to the carrier and not the manufacturer. YOU DO NEED A CONDENSATE PUMP. That's mentioned in the description. I'd suggest a low profile condensate pump (not sold in big box stores) because the regular one sits too high for water to drain properly. Just cut the supplied hose, with the elbow end on the discharge port, to the appropriate length and insert into pump. Attach discharge from pump to a drain. Then push the whole setup straight back into cutout (if that's your setup). The pump does the rest. I got the Diversitech low profile here on Amazon. Otherwise, I'd suggest a weep hole where the drain is if you're installing in an outdoor kitchen. Also depending on your floor (mine is brick), you may need a piece of plexiglass to use as a base for easy insertion and removal. It does come with caster wheels, but if you're using a standard height counter the wheels will make it too high to slide under the countertop. And the hardware cover for the hinge assembly is plastic and will most likely break if you smash or attempt to make it fit. Plus you need an inch of clearance. Make sure to level it according to its location to ensure proper drainage. All that said, it makes a lot of ice pretty quick. I'd say within a few hours from empty you'd have a full bin (25 lbs). I haven't had a party yet but so far, I'm satisfied. At least I saved $500. You do have to break up the ice, but how hard is that? ... show more

  • Ice Follies
Color: Stainless Steel
2nd Update: Bad unit picked up Tuesday. New unit arrived Thursday. I let it sit for 24 hours (as recommended), hooked it up an hour ago, and it's dumped four sets of cubes so far! Cubes are clear, machine is relatively quiet. Kudos to Edgestar and CompactAppliance for quick service. Update: Monday afternoon a return authorization was issued, so I'm packing it all back up for pickup and a new unit eventually. Two stars instead of one. Stay tuned. Previously: Well, so far it's not making ice. It runs fine, dribbling water over the evaporator, but it shuts off before any ice forms, and the blinking red light in the rear control panel indicates it thinks the ice bucket is full. Also, the On/Off button is either installed upside down, or it's wired backwards. On is Off, and Off is On. And, while we're at it, the thing did arrive with some minor dents in it that I was willing to overlook if it produced ice, but which are now looming larger in the realm of my overall satisfaction. Have left an email with EdgeStar support, but it's the weekend, and so we'll see how it goes. ... show more

  • Be aware this needs a Condensate Pump!!
Color: Stainless Steel
Be aware this unit does NOT have a built in condensate pump and you will need to order one if you plan to install it in a cabinet or any place without a floor drain. They also did not engineer the unit to have space in the back for a condensate pump so you will have to cut a whole in the wall behind the ice maker if you want to install a pump. I just don't know what these engineers are thinking these days… I ended up buying a Little Giant condensate pump to catch the water from the ice maker and pump it into a sink drain next to the ice maker. It works fine now but I sure wish I had known it needed the pump before I ordered it. Maybe I missed something in the product description. At least now when (or if) the pump goes out I can easily change it out. The last KitchenAid ice maker I bought had a built in condensate pump but it kept burning up so I actually think you're better off with this one. ... show more
