  • Somewhat difficult to assemble due to tight opening in the rubber part.
This product worked well when installed. Assembly was harder than it ought to be but took very little time.

  • It is simple, works well, but was a little difficult to assemble
It is simple and appears like it will hold up well. For the price, I am happy with the rack. It is not too difficult to attach or remove. While it works fine, it was a bit difficult to assemble. There are rubber covers over the center hold down block, and the holes in the rubber are just a tad smaller than the provided bolt heads. This made it very difficult to insert the bolts properly into the clamping mechanism and tighten down. The bolts are carriage bolts, and have to be pushed through the rubber far enough to engage into the square hole of the mounting plate. It is difficult to push them through enough so that they will lock in place. Also, once you have that part together, the provided thumb nuts are not as nice as my other Kayak Rack. They seem to work well enough, but are smaller and more difficult to tighten. Also, they do not appear to be of the same quality as my other rack. I would purchase again, but just know that it will take more time to assemble. There are more expensive ones that are easier to assemble and install. ... show more

  • I Actually Did Not Need This.....Now I Know (read on)
Let's set the stage. I'm a single woman of 50 who has wanted to kayak in my nearby lake for years. I finally bought a kayak and needed to be able to carry it over there. I have a 2020 Rav4 XLE that did not come with a roof rack. That's problem 1. Problem 2 is I'm doing this entirely on my own having consulted no one so I did create a few of my own problems. I'm doing my best to exert female independence (lol) so I'm owning my mistakes. Here's what I did... First, I bought a roof rack off of Amazon. I knew I'd need the roof rack because the kayak fits in my car but then I have no room for anything else. I assembled and installed the roof rack and felt super proud of myself. I should have ended there because I only have 1 kayak. My other kayaks are inflatable and can easily be thrown in the back. Now...if YOU have more than one kayak, you would need to move forward, OR if your roof rack won't hold a kayak because it's too small or for some other reason I can't really imagine. So I ordered this kayak rack because I had no idea I could just lash the kayak to the roof rack (which now that I've got it all done, I'll probably just do in the future and store this kayak roof rack - I'll explain that below). I had to use a mallet. Tons of people have indicated how the screws dont fit into that really stiff rubber so I had to use shear force and the mallet to get the screws to go in. Otherwise it went together pretty easily. Getting it onto my car was kind of a farce and I'm not 100% confident that it is actually tight enough to withstand anything other than side street ventures. I don't think I'd go out onto the freeway unless I had someone much stronger tightening this up but I also worry about the rubber ripping. I don't know. Lastly, once the kayak holder was attached to my car, I can't fit it into my garage anymore. So as long as I have my kayak up there, I'll be parking outside. It's really hot out there - not super happy. I guess no biggie. So I watched some youtube videos on how to get my kayak up on my car by myself and wrangled it up there and lashed it down. I'm pleased with the process and how I did it alone. Yay! But, in watching those videos, I realized that most people, when only doing 1 kayak, will just lay it across their roof rack and tie it down. Duh. I can totally do that AND, get it up/down easier, AND fit it in my garage with kayak attached. My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Glacier Nat. Park in the fall and we talked about getting him a kayak too. In that case, I absolutely would need this kayak holder BUT, this particular one only comes with one. So, I should have purchased the option where you get 2 (because duh). All of this I learned and now you don't need to make my mistakes :) p.s. if you buy this kayak holder, it comes with two straps. I recommend you buying two more. The two it came with are pretty long so perhaps it's all it needs but the videos also suggested tying your boat down front to back so if you brake hard or wind or something, it doesn't slip around (and I can totally see that happening). Fortunately I'm only going about 3 miles. Happy kayaking! ... show more

  • Just what I needed!
Easy to put together and just what I needed. I had a kayak saddle and J-rack on my car carrier, but the saddle wasn't a good choice, it was too wide, so with the new J-rack it works better for me.

  • Great product especially for the price!
Once the rack was assembled it was amazing! After making a few trips with my kayak on the roof I have full confidence in this product. Assembly was a bit of a struggle holes in the rubber piece didn’t line up perfectly but I used a rubber mallet and was able to get it built. The rack is study and pretty well built once it’s together I personally really enjoy mine and would recommend this one to others especially for the price! ... show more

  • Very hard to assemble
The rubber pad with 6 holes is the hardest mf part to get those machine screws through. Need a plier, a mallet and a flat head screwdriver to loosen and pull hard. It's like installing a tire on a rim without the proper tool.
