Newbery Honor BookNew York Times BestsellerChildren’s Literature Legacy Award WinnerThis impassioned, uplifting, and virtuosic tour de force from a treasured storyteller follows three children, in three different times and places, whose lives mysteriously intersect.Lost and alone in a forbidden forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica.Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo.Richly imagined and masterfully crafted, Echo pushes the boundaries of genre, form, and storytelling innovation to create a wholly original novel that will resound in your heart long after the last note has been struck. • This is considered YA but is very much enjoyable for adults
I rated this book for age 12+ I listened to the audiobook and ordered the paper version for a friend. I totally recommend the audiobook!!!! If you read the paperback or hard copy you will miss the wonderful music that the audiobook provides. This book is part fantasy and part history that everyone should learn about (WWII themed) ... show more

  • Great book. Missing chapters
Love the book. I use it in book clubs. Unfortunately, the 2 books I bought were missing about 20 pages.

  • A True Masterpiece
Christopher Paul Curtis (author) states on the back jacket of this book, "This is a beautifully crafted story...it has mystery, adventure, and a powerful sense of hope and heart. A masterpiece." No one can review this book any better than that! I am not one who reads all kinds of things, especially not fantasy. Nor do I choose books just by "top" reviewers. Also, I had just finished a story that moved me beyond anything I had ever read before. So, I was determined to try this thinking that I would be safe from all of that...WRONG. This story is very moving, very real-to-life with fantasy swirling all around you. For those that reviewed it as being confusing...give it another shot because you will figure it all out...just keep reading. That's what great challenging books do...they make you embrace every fiber of your being. This is now one of my favorite books. ... show more

  • My 9 YO Grandson and I Both Loved This Book
I read this book aloud from China to my 6 and 9 yo grandsons in the Philippines. When I finished it, the nine year old said, “Mema, I loved EVERY WORD of that story!” I had to agree with him. It’s a remarkable book made up of several equally enchanting plot lines that interweave into one beautiful tale. The resolution was satisfying and rich. There were none of the frustrating”But what about”s that plague some books with multiple threads. At no point did I wish away part of the book or skim or get bored. I was a literature major. I read several books a week. This was one of the best books I’ve ever read- and I chose it to read to my grandkids! Ha! I both loved and hated to see this book end. ... show more

  • My 11 year old loves this book! (She said this one was easier to follow than Esperanza Rising).
My now 6th grader loves this book. She read Esperanza Rising in 5th grade, for school, and talked non-stop about how much she enjoyed that book, so I bought Echo for one of her summer reading books. It’s a winner! bought Echo because I thought she may like it since it’s written by the same author, but I noticed it’s a well liked book as it is. She told me I would like it as well, so I’m next. Maybe I’ll add to this review when I’m done, but I know for sure that one 11 year old girl loves it! By the way, Esperanza Rising is a wonderful book that I highly recommend for young people, especially during these challenging times with the virus and changing economy (for some) etc. ... show more
