Description

In this heartwarming and funny middle-grade novel by the New York Times bestselling author of Counting by 7s, Julia grows into herself while playing a Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz Julia is very short for her age, but by the end of the summer run of The Wizard of Oz, she’ll realize how big she is inside, where it counts. She hasn’t ever thought of herself as a performer, but when the wonderful director of Oz casts her as a Munchkin, she begins to see herself in a new way. As Julia becomes friendly with the poised and wise Olive—one of the adults with dwarfism who’ve joined the production’s motley crew of Munchkins—and with her deeply artistic neighbor, Mrs. Chang, Julia’s own sense of self as an artist grows. Soon, she doesn’t want to fade into the background—and it’s a good thing, because her director has more big plans for Julia! Bubbling over with humor and tenderness, this is an irresistible story of self-discovery and of the role models who forever change us. Read more

  • Julia’s involvement in the play ends up being the best thing that can happen to her
Thank you to one of our 5th grade kiddos for recommending Short for our after school book club! Julia has always been short and is self conscious about her height. When summer comes, her mom makes her audition for a part in the local university’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Of course she is cast as a munchkin, along with her little brother. Julia’s involvement in the play ends up being the best thing that can happen to her. It helps her get over the loss of her dog, Ramon; she develops a relationship with her neighbor, Mrs. Chan; she befriends Olive, an adult in the play and fellow munchkin, and she changes how she feels about herself. Over the course of the summer, she not only grows on the outside, but also grows on the inside, which is where it matters most! This was such a sweet, enjoyable read! I loved Julia. She was comical, yet thoughtful at the same time. I loved seeing how her involvement with the play helped her to mature and come to terms with being herself! This is a great middle grade read! ... show more

  • Real and varied characters grapple with issues that matter
Really enjoyed and highly recommend Holly Goldberg Sloan's Short. Her identification of theater as a place where people can be whoever they are is wonderful (reminiscent of Tina Faye's summer theater experience from her memoir- the welcoming nature of both is palpable) - particularly appreciated in this era of rising intolerance and lack of support for the arts. Sometimes children's books that tackle issues fall into the trap of being pedantic; not so here. .As is the case with ALL of Goldberg Sloan's novels, I SO appreciate her writing - real and varied characters who think about and work through understanding things that matter.. ... show more

  • Fun lighthearted story
This is a great selection for third fourth and fifth grade students. It is a lighthearted adventurous story about a girl discovering the strength within herself. Each character has its own strong personality. Unpredictable twists in the storyline keeps the reader intrigued.

  • Short is sweet
Holly Goldberg Sloan has written another great novel about celebrating differences. Julia is a bright girl who underestimates her abilities due to her stature. When her mother signs Julia and her younger brother Randy up for the summer theater production of The Wizard of Oz, Julia begins to grow a great deal over the summer. This book triumphs in highlighting differences, and doesn't gloss them over, but rather celebrates them. Short is a winner. ... show more

  • I enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book. It's probably more of an adolescent novel but it had a great message and was entertaining.

Very realistic and displays intimate thoughts and emotions well. Julia’s voice rings true. Wonderful insight into adolescent struggles and gives a beautiful language to anyone trying to express themselves.
