- The light carrot plate has a 4.5 inch spacing (11.4cm) between seeds and accommodates seeds like lettuce, turnip, mustard, kale, and light cabbage.
- The broccoli plate has 1 inch spacing (2.5cm) between seeds and can accommodate seeds such as cauliflower, cabbage, rutabaga, and turnip.
- The cucumber and popcorn plates have 9 inch spacing (22.9cm) between seeds. The cucumber can plant pumpkin, gourds, sunflowers, watermelon, and other flat seeds. The popcorn plate can plant medium sized seeds around 0.250 inches (6.3mm).
- The lima bean plate has 12 inch spacing (30.5cm) between seeds and accommodates larger seeds such as peanuts and those around 0.625 inches (15.69cm).

Works, but awkward
There are only a few options for direct-seeding a garden, get down on your knees to dribble seeds into a furrow, or buy a machine mounted seed drill for a lot of money. For gardeners who want to plant more than a few feet of row, there are no easy solutions. The Earthway seeder is a compromise, but a pretty good one IMO. It is well made and works as advertised, but it is light weight, requires a well-prepared bed to work well, and can be hard to keep in a straight line. The plates are not real good for small seeds- I planted white clover and got a very dense planting. Still, I think with some work (maybe blocking some of the openings in the plate) I can get the density I need. Overall this is a good machine, and the price is outstanding.

First use went very well.
Used the light carrot plate already for fall turnips, looks like the precise seed spacing I desired. I hope the Lima Bean plate works for sunflower seed next spring. The optional plates should reduce the amount of thinning I need, and with 6,000 square foot of garden I don't like to waste seed or time. Not everyone needs the optional plates, I will likely never use 2 (of the 5) but they add flexibility to my Earthway seeder. I am quite satisfied with the purchase of this product, as well as the vender.

What I liked about the earth way
What I liked about the earth way, is that everything outside of the seed planter box and disk work fairly decent! I have fairly fine ground, worked up with a tiller. The seeder cuts through the ground with ease and seems to plant at proper depths with adjustment. I replaced the covering chain with a heavier chain because in some cases the factory chain wasn't quite covering the seeds. What i didn't like about it are the seed disk and the planter box. The idea is ok having a box and plates, but it is poorly engineered. If you are planting real small seed, you need to have a lot of extra seed in the bottom of the seed hopper just so the seeds reach the holes in the planting disk. Seed of the same family comes in different sizes, even know you can purchase a variety of plates, you will have to have a little luck that your seed works with the plate that is labeled for that particular seed as far as spacing and number of seeds per drop. Yes you can use tape to help modify the plates. Another problem with the seed plates are they are flimsy! As you are planting sometimes seeds in the seed hopper will get bound up on a seed plate and cause the plate flex and snap ahead. This knocks all of the seeds out of the disk! The best luck I had was planting peas with it. The seed size was ok for the plate, it planted double ounce in a while, but i planted so many that a few imperfections per row are fine. All in all i will keep experimenting with it and using it to plant my peas, but for the price they need to re engineer it so it works better or lower the price!

A good addition to the Planter
This is a nice set of additional plates for the Earthway planter. They fit well and allow you to plant even more spacings and varieties of seeds with the planter.

Increases your planting ability
These seed plates make it easy to plant more types of seed than the ones that come with the Earthway planter. But $30 for 6 pieces of plastic seems a little much as these have been around for over 30 years.
