  • Good for Specific Jobs
Style: 52cc Viper Engine Powerhead
It was easy to setup and start using. Probably 10 minutes to assemble the 36" auger and 12" extension. I drilled five holes so far. It works reasonably well and isn't too heavy. My soil is totally soaked at the surface and harder packed clay below. There are occasional rocks. If you don't have a tamping bar, you should get one with a chisel point to break up hard to reach rocks. It's not too difficult for one man to control if you're reasonably athletic. The thing that took me a while to figure out is when the auger stalls out from hitting a rock or something, the shock absorbing spring can get wound up 1/4-1/2 a turn. If you try to just take your hands off the handles it will unwind rapidly--it bent my thumb back uncomfortably that way. You can easily unwind it with your upper body and maintain control, though. It gets a little laborious to remove from the hole once it's in there a couple of feet, but other than that it's pretty easy to lift and move. It does the job really well. Good value, and so far, pretty reliable. No trouble starting so far. The gas tank is a little leaky if you leave the unit tipped onto that side. ---Update I drilled 22 holes about 40 inches deep through a layer of ~1 foot topsoil and the rest is clay to set some posts for a pole building. It is extremely laborious. If there are multiple rocks or roots in the hole, it took at least an hour to get to the desired depth. In ideal conditions it was about 30-45 minutes of very hard labor. If you have any back or cardiovascular problems, I'd think twice about using this extensively. If your project is in an accessible location, you should definitely rent a skid steer/auger type contraption. You could probably drill 10 holes in the time it takes to drill 1 with this. On the other hand, I used this to drill holes to plant 2 new cherry trees and it was nearly perfect for that task. So, all in all I would not recommend it for a big construction job, but I would for drilling holes for planting, or for occasional use, like setting a post for a mailbox or similar things. ... show more

  • very powerfull, strong enough to make 45 holes in 16 hours
Style: 52cc Viper Engine Powerhead
we did you use it with the persons, due to the weight, and the depth of the hole, we had to use it with persons. 4 feet depth, 8 inches wide, 45 holes in 16 hours. if you find hard clay, we figure it out that you need to throw some water in order to go down deep. 4 stars because on the screws (small one) that support some part of the gas tank fell down while making holes. in order to put it back, i have to unscrew the whole head. ... show more

  • Just One Thing To Consider
Style: 52cc Viper Engine Powerhead
No doubt, this is a well built post hole auger. The only thing I want to warn a potential purchaser about is its size and weight. It is much beefier than any on the “one-person” augers I have seen and the extra weight is something you should be aware of before getting this one. I am 6’3”, 220 lbs, and in pretty good shape, and this machine is a chore for me to operate by myself. So unless you plan to use it with a helper please take this into consideration. Otherwise, you will benefit from a more powerful digger that makes digging post holes much quicker. With these things in mind I do recommend this auger as long as you are ready to handle the beast. ... show more

  • Great
Style: 52cc Viper Engine Powerhead
This thing works great - I have just regular soil but have to go through about 5 inches of hard pan (1 to 1 1/2 inch rocks). For the most part it gets through the rock but don’t go full throttle or it’ll twist you into a pretzel when it snags one. It doesn’t claim to be a rock borer so yes at times you have to get the bar out. Some complained that after a while it started hard when hot. I discovered this also but since I’m a troubleshooter by profession I reasoned if it started good to that point something has to be hindering it. After a little looking around I discovered it. After about 20 postholes the air filter gets saturated with oil for some reason, I assume it has something to do with oil mixed in gas. Well all you have to do is clean the filter and it’s good as new. ... show more

  • Amazing Tool and Worth Having
Style: 52cc Viper Engine Powerhead
This thing is incredible. Saved me so much time when digging 80 post holes. Could not be happier with my purchase. Got it for a fence build but planning on adding it to my fabrication side business and offering install services on some of the signs we make. I was able to do 50 holes in a day with my small in stature wife (yep, my wife helps with stuff like that. You can be jealous). If she, at 5' 2", and me, a mouse pushing engineer, can handle it then you should be able to find someone to help. It takes two people to handle properly. About killed me to do 10 alone. I will say when it got pretty warm the idle didnt seem to drop all the way down. So the shaft spun slowly with no throttle. This meant that it spun when lining it up with marks and went off center a bit. It fired right up and has continued to fire up immediately. Really enjoying this piece of equipment. ... show more

Works well in clean soil, not so well in rocky and/or rooty soil. Engine runs great.
